Sampras says Federer still has Grand Slams left

HONG KONG – Pete Sampras predicts Roger Federer still has a few more Grand Slam titles to win despite his recent loss in the U.S. Open final.

"Roger is going to win some more majors. Maybe he's not going to be quite as dominant as he once was," Sampras told a media conference in Hong Kong Tuesday via telephone from Los Angeles. The seven-time Wimbledon champion was promoting his upcoming exhibition match against Andre Agassi in the nearby southern Chinese gambling enclave of Macau on Oct. 25.

Top-ranked Federer lost in five sets to Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in the Sept. 14 U.S. Open final.

"When push comes to shove, I still like Roger at these majors," Sampras said, adding that Federer may find it hard to motivate himself given his already stellar record.

Federer won his first French Open earlier this year to complete a career Grand Slam, then won Wimbledon to break Sampras' record of 14 major titles.

Asked if it hurt to see his record broken, Sampras, who watched Federer's five-set Wimbledon victory over American Andy Roddick from courtside, said it was expected.

"I think we all knew it was going to happen. It was inevitable that he was going to break the record," the American said. "I was actually happy to be there and witness it."

Sampras said he also expects Rafael Nadal to linger at the top of the rankings despite his recent struggles with injury.

"He's going to be around in the top two or three in the world for as long as he wants to be," he said. "He's an animal, a great athlete, a great player. He's going to go through different lulls in his game, but when push comes to shove, you're always going to see Rafa in the last couple of days of the event."

Nice to hear Sampras's positive views on both Fed's and Rafa's future. :)

^^ of course he does... but he's definitely over the hill and his best days are behind him, IMO. There is some decent talent in the top 10 and Federer doesn't have the same aura of invincibility that he used to.

I predict Federer will win 1 GS tournament in 2010 (Wimby or the USO). After 2010 I think him winning another GS is questionable.

Sampras did his weekly "I-must-open-my-mouth-so-that-people-does-not-forget-about-me", this time something positive about Federer, how nice.

Federer's best days have been behind him since the summer of 2007. He has managed to make the finals and win like 5 slams after that. In the best possible scenario, I expect him to finish at 18 or 19. Worst case, I think he sneaks out at least one more.

You didn't sound too positive 2 days ago when you called Nadal's serve crap, his return crap, and basically bashed Nadal more than the worst *******.
Did Cesc do that??? Priceless!

Before, Sampras praises Roger for all of his immense success, BUT he had to add a few things such as Roger didn’t have the competition, no players are pushing him, or there’s no s/v players to put pressure on him. All Sampras’s doing was to suggest that he’s still the best.

Now it’s different. Ever since Sampras conceded Roger as the best ever, he’s free and relax to say positive things about Roger(without being defensive). I think he’s gotten use to it by now b/c not only him, but the general public believe Roger is the better player.

Tony Kornheiser just said that Fed won't win any more slams on Sportscenter.... i doubt if the old fool even watches tennis.

Even bigger morons seem to be this Cesc Fab dude and of course Sureshs.....They make statements like they are fortune tellers of some sort but turn out to be wrong always.

Nadal will win 2 slams next year and end the year no.1

The man that invented the Eveready battery gave away the company so that he could play with his model trains

(just another piece of worthless of topic info)

@ OP: this is a handy thread... it's just what we needed! another fed\samp\nad\era\goat debate...

Well no one really knows but how ignorant is it to state that the number 1 player in the world is "over the hill"? Everyone (with luck) gets older and the competitive years for a tennis player are really quite short. It is inevitable for every player.

And I thought he'd be vague this time.

Next time he'll probably tell us how he thinks Del Potro is going to be a threat to Federer and Nadal at majors. And how Nadal can improve if he is able to manage his schedule better and avoid injuries. And how the upcoming big hitters will make the hard court season more competitive.

You know, the things people would never have figured out for themselves.

When will reporters realise he can't give them more definitive answers?
