What are those bracelets that Mardy Fish is wearing?

im not sure if its the same thing but i think NBA (basketball) players are also wearing those. i read an article on it, which i cant find right now. to me it sounds like a placebo, apparently it improves balance and endurance.

It's based upon science. People have lost faith in their blend of superstition and religion....so some smart marketeers are filling that gap with something to believe in.

This is eastern medicine blended with multi-level marketing. So perfect for the 'new age', good for the weekend warrior looking to buy a piece of lifestyle, great for the pseudo athlete who wants to look like a pro who has one, a perfect conversation piece for the conversationally challenged -- it's even cool for the tin foil hat crowd!

The beauty of it isn't what it does, it's what it does for YOU. Not in an empirical sense, but, mysteriously, what it aligns inside each individual. It's like a bio-antenna, and well, there's all kinds of stuff inside you that doesn't always work together perfectly, and this helps your own signals work more efficiently inside you. At least that is what they can claim unofficially. Not sure which ones you guys are talking about, but they all claim something really awesome/epic/amazing and vague like that.

Anyway, just in case you guys find one that's empirically proven to do more than look cool and make a lot of people a lot of money in a pyramid kind of way, let me know!

Magnetic insoles in shoes have been shown to improve balance in older people. You can look it up on PubMed. Not sure I would wear a wrist magnet for balance, though, and hadn't heard of this particular type. They have also been shown to speed healing of broken bones, help with diabetic neuropathy, and very strong fields are used to help in treating depression. Studies have found magnetic mattresses helpful in treating fibromyalgia.
Study stuff yourself and don't listen to those with no knowledge of the subject who automatically say it is a placebo effect. Baylor College of Medicine, University of Virginia, and many others have done studies showing positive effects of magnets. Of course, posters here have all the knowledge they need without any study.
I myself essentially had to quit playing tennis about 15 years ago because of my rotator cuff before I started using a MagBoy. I've been playing as much as the rest of my body will let me since then. I've had two people I gave magnets to who the doctors said needed surgery for broken bones who healed quickly enough that they ended up not having the surgeries. They have also seemed to be helpful in fighting depression in my familiy's experience.

power balance wrist bands , they have been showing up in almost every sporting event, been wearing them for some time now , whats up with the special powers , who knows but I wont take my off , been playing out of my mind , its like "white light meditation"it brings peace ,joy and love in to your life .

I found this info, btw the local shop hands out some adhesive patches w/
some of this mat'l to try but I hvn't yet used it.

The one he wears is crazy expensive compared to the other necklaces that phiten has.

It kinda reminds me of the nasal dilator strips that so many top competitors in so many sports started wearing some years ago.
You don't see those much anymore.

In the case of the nasal dilator strips, I can imagine they can work (although they apparently don't really make so much difference). But magnetic bracelets, necklaces, etc.? Gimme a break.

I'm not questioning magnet therapy when applied properly, i.e. based on actual scientific and medical data and diagnosis, and done by a trained professional to treat specific health problems (plus we're talking much stronger magnetic fields). I just don't buy the this-bracelet-will-restore-your-balance nonsense. I mean, how does the bracelet know in which direction my balance is thrown off? ;)

If weak magnetic fields randomly applied to the human body did work wonders, entire generations that spent half their life in front of the CRT TV tube would need no medical attention ;)

There would be many practical uses for this up and coming technology.

Such as a steel mesh belt with an accompanying with a strong Nd magnet in the buttcap that allowed you to readily clip and unclip the racket from your belt, like they did with lightsabers in starwars.

If only, if only.

Yea,,,i tried Magnet and didn't work for me either. Things that work are Good Braces, Kinesio Tapes, and Voltaren Gel. and some Morphine Tablets but just dont' take it Before the match...:)

I wish I would come up with stuff like this. Get some crappy plastic bracelet with a couple of stickers, call them balance hollograms and sell them for $30. I bet this junk is made in China, probably at a cost of $2.00 tops with shipping to the US. Brilliant.

So really, all I wanted to know was, what it was. But since the thread has come down this road of placebo effect (which I knew it was) I feel the need to comment.

Dare I say unproven "new technologies" that have no scientifical evidence that it really works are also placebo? I KNOW all of us on this board are guilty of this. New technologies on racquets that we buy because it's the latest and greatest that could POSSIBLY improve our game. We ridicule a purchase of maybe 50 bucks for a bracelet or necklace but we drop 200 on a racquet?

I say go for it. Instead of placebo, I call it "power of suggestion". If you think it works, it will...

Is religion placebo? For respect of religion, I'll leave it at that.

That was my point. If you believe it in, it will work. If you believe in God, he exists for you.Thats why my bracelets would actually work xD As for rackets, I don't buy rackets because of new technology, I buy them if they play well.

I was (still am) 100% skeptical about these things but yesterday I saw some at a tennis club for $30. I tried it out and they did 3 test. The same ones you see on you tube. 2 were basically me standing there and they tried to knock me down. Without the braclet, I tip over easy. With it, they couldn't get me down.

The third test, I just twist my body around as far as I could to test flexibiliy. I could turn much farther with the braclet.

I can't explain it. The only thing I can think of was they pull you down different with and without it but I couldn't tell how. But that doesn't explain the flexibility test.

Again I am still very sceptical. Its probably a placebo effect but I just can't wrap my head around the results of the test. My friend did it also and same results.

A theory that many believe and makes sense to me is that the first time you do any of the tests you feel whats coming, then they put the bracelet on and do it again, but its not the bracelet thats helping you, its your body compensating cause it knows the push thats coming.

Same thing with flexibility. First time you stretch you can't go that far, try to touch your toes again the second time and you can.

Its odd, I don't really believe, but I still wear my trion z bracelet. Can't take it off, feels weird to me.

I thought the same thing. Thats why I did it twice. The second time, I even tried harder. Then my buddy did it and same thing.

Wierd stuff.

i went eastbourne yesterday and saw azarenka wearing the power balance band as well as llodra too. weird there the only 2 players i have seen wearing them and they are both doing great! COULD THEY BE WORKING? :)

They cost significantly less than $1 to manufacture and you're right - probably $2 with freight, and closer to $18 to market. You might be forgetting about the multiple levels of profit-sharing goodness along the way!

They really get pro athletes involved with this stuff. NBA, WTA, even Ivan Lendl!

I'm not a big conspiracy theoriest, but I am beginning to think we've got some serious problems with the military-industrial/sports-entertainment complex. People buy what they think they ought to buy. It's gotten almost Orwellian up in here.

placebo effect = power of suggestion.

placebo effect is usually positive. however in the case of medical fraud, placebo remedies can be very dangerous in that it may delay legitimate treatment of curable conditions to the point where effective treatment may no longer be possible. not so different from religion. :twisted:

But what led you to demo? My point is that there HAD to have been SOME power of suggestion to make you want to demo another racquet. Think of some things you own, what made you buy it? Take shoes for example, there are no places (at least that I know) that allows you to demo. For us TT'ers, maybe it's the review, maybe it's a buddy that says they're comfortable - this is all power of suggestion.

Even clothes, why buy name brand? We all know a white Hanes t-shirt is as comfortable as a Nike, or Adidas cotton t-shirt yet we buy it.

Isn't it one of those germanium bracelets held together with magnets? I got one earlier this year from japan, doesnt seem to do anything. The funniest thing is the list of treatments its supposed to do, including lowering your risk of cancer and boosting energy. The only con listed seemed to be that it gives you a dry throat for the first few weeks lol

If you believe they work, they do. If something good happens to you, you will attribute it to the bracelet. If something bad happens, you will tell yourself it would have been a lot worse had it not been for the bracelet. That is how human psychology works. We need a psychological defense against the arbitrary stuff that life keeps throwing at us. We also need a way to always justify that we made the right choice otherwise we will be tormented with guilt.

The magnetic field from these bracelets has negligible effect on anything, from a scientific point of view.

This is exactly what we call clever marketing :) We create a simple product, nice story, pay a few pros to use our product and millions of people will start to think that it has to work :) As it is finally your mind that decides if it works or not...it actually may work :)
