Nothing more boring than watching grown men play kick ball with no winner.
At least Hockey has fights to break up the boredom.

LOL, no "sport" should be taken seriously where a tie is acceptable.

Sorry...I'm out. I love to rattle the cages in the zoo every now and then but when it comes to this tournament...well, let's just say a lot of people take it very seriously. My sister and brother-in-law are in South Africa watching it and I respect the love of the game. Many people question curling as well but to each their own, no?

Its a league situation,a draw is worth a point and it keeps the roups (hopefully) close untill the final game. Most US derived sports are turn based, look at basket ball and American football for instance, one team scores then the other is given a nice turn to score. This is designed to promote high scoring games that can allow for short play "periods" (for tv advertising or short periods of interest whatever you may think) which don't often end in draws, though i think there is sudden death "OT" in the NFL, in the regular season?
It's dependent on what you are used to, you can have a 0-0 draw that was an entertaining game, i've also sat through 4-4 draws where i have thought the quality of the match was pretty rubbish.Scoreline isn't the be all and end all, you'll struggle to find a fan who likes penalty shoot outs and look how the 1970s mls type leagues ended their "ties" with a ice hockey style shoot out that most fans were turned off by.
The US has a huge market for football, it's one of the largest participation sports in childhood over there which is why you are getting good fairly quickly, turning the average armchair spectator into the tactics and fine points when there are brighter and shiney-er sports to watch is the hardest bit to crack.
SOme matches are dull though, fear of loosing over-rides the desire to win.

NFL does sudden death regular season but in the rare occurence the sudden death period ends the game is a tie. since 1974 (first year of sudden death) there have been 17 tie games.

Im fine with ties in group play and in leage regular season. the problem I have with World cup is that the champion can be decided on Penalty Kicks. But I guess thats better than teams playing for 7 hours with little scoring.

I myseld dont quite understand soccer and the worlds infatuation. But I understand poeple love the game like I love Baseball. so i give them thier joy as long as I dont have hear those stupid horns after this year.

Rooney feelin' swoony .... as Ronaldo takes yet another 'dive'

"Oh!...Oh Ronaldo. They say that a tie is like kissing your sister??..
Well you my man feel nothing like a tie!"

on-topic: you play and if it ends up a tie you move on and play the next game. In the case of the United States vs. England, the Yanks were more than happy to "settle" for a tie what with that butter-fingered gaff by the Brit goalie. And the next day's New York Post cover pages (both front & back) also made the case for a 'tie' being a good thing by conjuring up images of the famously humorous (American football) headline "Harvard Beats Yale, 29-29" with the headline "USA Wins 1-1!" :

in Test cricket you can play for 5 days and still end up with a draw very often. Its a sign of 2 quite evenly matched teams plying their trade, or a superior team perhaps dominating a match but unable to secure the victory.
You need to really appreciate sport to appreciate the subtleties of it.

I recall talks of making football more appealing to US audiences and thus preventing draws from occuring (its called a draw, not a tie) and also splitting the game into quarters and not halves. It was soon put to bed, the game is not worth diluting to attract those who dont appreciate it as it is. And pretty much the whole world seems to appreciate it exactly as it is.

Great game, second only to cricket.

yep, it seems appreciation, and thus demand, for the purer form of the game (test matches) is decreasing in this age of instant gratification. Such a shame.

This is either a joke comment or a major show of stupidity. Obviously you dont know the game at all. Its our sport in the UK, some people say that American sports are just a 3 hour excuse to eat pizza and drink bud lights here, but most of us actually respect the art, history and idea of a game. I'm a big american football, NBA and even now MLB fan. At first I thought it looked but boring, but after learning all the rules and what its all about you respect it. What your doing is saying the number one sport in the world is stupid and you would rather watch a fight in a hockey game? If you want to see men fighting then watch Boxing where its a technical sport, not 2 men slipping on ice acting like idiots setting a bad example. What a stupid thread, and its your first post, good luck...

Perhaps the former age when people used to skip work and school to watch 5 days of test cricket was not so great.

nah it was great, all part of our great british sporting culture, when we went from being very good at sport, to very good at watching sport.

I remember watching snooker too, where matches can take 2 days. I seemed to have more patience then. Nowadays i rarely get to watch much sports before the remote is comandeered and its the disney channel. But occasionally i do get my youngest daughter to agree to watch tennis for a few minutes, i count that as one of the most productive achievements of parenthood.

I don't think i have ever seen one not end in a field goal from the team that eceives the kick off, ta for the info!
Cricket has been reduced to 20-20 now

Its a good version of the game but very different than the proper version, it's sort of like having a season long version of the home run event they have in the baseball season, fun but missing a lot of the tactics of the full game.

Test match cricket adjusted to 5 days after years of altering.Originally it was two innings each irespective of the amount of days, no draws that way, though I doubt the tv spectical of that would catch the US advertisers imagination!

I was talking about the spectators. The game may be nice, but if it results in classes in colleges being canceled and wholesale absenteeism, I don't think it is a good thing.

Sort of like the rowdy behavior among soccer fans or the irritating trumpets. Nothing to do with soccer really.

Yop matches used to go for 10 days in the earlier days of Bradman and the like.
