Do give the platinum a demo. A wonderfully constructed racquet and brilliantly well done. Being alongtime prestige user I am converted to it. Bought one and had my first hit yesterday with it.

Did you get the unrealesed X-Series Platinum 94 or the X-Dual??
I´m just waiting for 2 X-Series Platinum. Bought the pair today here at the classifieds...

The X-Series platinum are very good racquets. If I did not get a deal with Prince, I might have considered them more seriously.

I posted pictures and weights of them in this forum earlier. Specs are pretty close.

i just found your posts about the X Platinum (i was reading the thread page by page and did no reached yours). Nice pics, i´ll receive a pair of those nice sticks next weeks, and i assume i´ll be the only "donnay" owner in Argentina...
As i played the microgel prestige mid this year (actually i´m between the yt prestige mp and the mg prestige pro), this donnay was something i wanted to try...

I guess that you are the original owner of the 2 platinums i bought today (4 5/8 grips, purchased the racquets here at the classifieds from D1GoldenBear)

I am demoing X-Dual Pro right now.

Here are the observations I can make.

Overall, I find it most similar to Head Pro Tour 630 Lite.
Similar swing, similar feel, similar spin, and similar results.
Like PT630L, it feels head-heavy in flight (on paper, it is head-light). This is good and bad: the good part is that it produces tremendous flat serves; the bad part -- it is somewhat slow in fast exchanges. It is not whippy. Between these two, I'd say that Head Pro Tour 630 Lite is better: it is softer, yet produces the same predictable response as Donnay, and same level of power.

The next in kin, in terms of similarity, will be Head Prestige MP. The Donnay feels slightly firmer, and more solid on impact. As I said before, the weight seems to be more at the top, whereas Prestige has it more or less in the middle of the racquet. Everything else is about the same. On powerful shots, LM Prestige feels wobblier than Donnay. PT630 flexes a lot more on impact than Donnay, and is less powerful than Donnay. The feel of PT630 is "raw", Donnay is "insulated".

On one-handed-backhand, it is easier for me to whip Prestige or PT630 around than Donnay.

iRadical MP / Ti.Pro Tour (both more head-heavy than Prestiges, and closer to Donnay on paper) are very different, and are not as good as Donnay X-Dual Pro: they are stiffer, harsher, and less power.

Hope this helps.

I was eying the x-series platinum as well but I'm still having a hard time believing the strung swing-weight is 295 on a ~350g strung racquet even if it is 12pts head light.

they seem to change models a lot, so probably yes, even if you wait a week!

Hahaha! My bud who prefers XL sticks found Donnays and he seems to think they are pretty nifty.

Bed? Pfft! I did my final essays for History today, and I've been flying ever since LOL! I woke up for 6am, wrote my exams for 3 hours, went to work for 5 hours, and then came home and studied! I still have a few more hours to lurk before bed!

Pretty much agree with everything the above poster has said. HOwever I have not played with the Head pro tour 630 light. However, having played with the prestiges for about 14 years I can safely say that although the donnnay feels abit heavy in the head(and not according to the specs listed on tw website) it is still whippier in heavy rallies as compared to the youtek prestige mid and abit better than the microgel prestige mid. Still one has to prepare early and keep the hands abit loose to whip the ball but still feels less of a burden on the arm than the prestiges. I think head had it right with the intelli versions of the prestige.

Finally I got a chance to bring a demo Silver 99 racquet home and tested it. I remember that when I first hit this frame side by side with Gold 99 sometime last year, I couldn't feel the difference. But now I can clearly feel the difference and have more fun hitting more creative shots with it. While Gold 99 is a solid frame for baseliners, the Silver 99 is ideal for all-courters. In stock form, the racquet is a little to light for me. Adding +10g butt cap makes this racquet much more suitable for my liking. I strung it with Solinco Tour Bite 16L and Barb Wire 17 at 52 lbs, which give perfect blend of power, control, and more ball bite.

The Silver 99 is clearly stiffer than Gold 99, but not too stiff like Babolat Pure Drive. The raquet comes thru the air very quickly and power is not so much as expected. Ball feel is solid, crisp, and of course almost zero vibration. Groundstroke rally is just ok, not as silky smooth as Gold 99. It doesn't hit heavy ball like Gold 99 and Platinum 99 do. However, I start to get more fun when moving the ball around the court and hitting angle-to-angle shots. Hitting forehand cross-court or one-handed backhand passing shots with this is effortless. I don't have to prepare backswing early like I do with other heavier racquets. High stiffness and lower swingweight of the racquet make a lot of creative shots much easier like driving with power steering. Actually, Silver 99 is one of the easiest control-oriented racquets I have played so far. The frame is light enough to carry and run around the court without feeling burdened, and the lighter swing weight allow wristy players to hit more creative shots. In other aspects, spin was great but slice flies a little bit.

Compared to Orange 99, the Silver 99 falls into the same category - aggressive all-court but Silver 99 is quite easier to play. With Orange 99, I need to put power-oriented string like Solinco Tour Bite on only. But the Silver 99 is open to more string types. Textutre or twisted strings works best as I get more bite and control in the same time.

Suppawat,

I'm glad to see that someone else on the board other than me likes the Silver. I really like this stick and was surprised to see so little support (if any) for it. I find that it has really great access to spin, good pop and performs really well all over the court.

I had actually started a thread a while back specifically highlighting the fact that there seemed to be no love for the Silver.

Are you sticking with the Pro One or the Silver?

Suppawat,

The headshape of the silver appears longer and narrower than the gold. Is this correct, or is it just an illusion created by the different colors at 3 & 9?

I think it's an illusion created by the colors-- the gold and silvers I've had were the same shape.

It will take more time for me to answer. I love the directional control and the way stringbed consistently respond to the ball. But the racquet is good for all-courters who hit the ball while running and excute shots inside the baseline. My game is not that dynamic. But if one day my body gets slimmer (I am seriously working towards it) and I can run more, I probably play Silver 99.

I have been playing Blue 99 and Platinum 99 for quite some time because I love the mass, full/solid ball feel and excellent control from both frames. The Pro One is a different kind of racquet with amazing level of power and I can still control it. It's like a lighter version of Wilson H22 pro stock racquet. I can stand behind the baseline and hit powerful groundstroke with less effort than Blue 99 and Platinum 99. The power of Pro One is very useful for closing points.

I've emailed back and forth with one user who asked me about Platinum 94 since November 2011. He was searching for a Head PC600 replacement and asked me what Donnay racquet he should try. Finally, he bought Platinum 94 and shared some feedback with me about the racquet feeling a bit head heavy although it's actually 7 pts HL. So I took a test drive last night and found something interesting.

The Platinum 94 I demoed has barcode reading "321306700031" which means it has unstrung balance of 306mm or approx 10 pts HL. I strung it with Solinco Barb Wire 17 at 50 lbs and believe the balance has changed to 7 pts HL. On the playtest, I did feel the head of racquet is a bit heavy even though it's head light by spec. I tried adding more weight in the butt cap and didn't help much until I changed grip size! I put 2 more overgrips on it to make the grip larger than my normal grip size (4-3/8). After grip enlargement, the racquet feels quicker and easier to swing. I think a larger grip size allows me to hold the grip looser and can flick my wrist more naturally than with smaller grip. It may not sound very logical, but it works.

After 3 hours of playtest, I don't think I can play Platinum 94 in stock form. It plays quite different from PC600 I am used to. The weight distribution is towards below 3/6/9 o'clock postion. I feel there is not enough mass in the top hoop to help mishits, but it's good for those who tends to hit the ball towards the bottom half (sweet spot) of racquet face. I tried several set up and end up with +3g slide weight at 12, +10g butt cap, and 2 overgrips over 4-3/8 grip. The overall weight goes up by 23g, but it swing very natural in both offensive and defensive shots for me. Forehand is powerful and one-handed backhand is natural and consistent from the baseline. Volley is accurate, solid and stable. The racquet has the right ball connection feel, less shock to arms, and can customize to different personal likings. Regarding stiffness, it's not 70RA like Babolat Pure Drive for sure. It may read 70RA on the RDC but with my set up, the dynamic stiffness is a little flexier than PC600. I believe it's a result of thinner beam and extra 3g weight in head. Actually, all Donnay thin-beamed racquets feel flexier than stiffness printed inside the throat. In summary, I think the Platinum 94 can be a good replacement for Head PC600 but it will take some time to adjust to it.

I have an i.prestige MP strung at 50lbs with Big Banger Rough that I like.
I recently bought an Ncode 6.1 95 that I strung yesterday with Genesis Black Magic at 53lbs, and it seems too trampoline/launching - not enough control. Probably need higher tension than I anticipated.

I really like my i.prestige MP but the lack of pop to put away a winner and the weight is a bit much, so I went with the platinum 99 as it seems to be similar to an i.prestige MP but slightly lighter, slightly easier to swing, and slightly more powerful with great feel and touch which is exactly what I'm looking for.

The Platinum 99 is coming in on Friday and I have more BM string, what should I string it at based on above???

I posted this in it's own thread. Hasn't gotten a response yet and I figure it could go in here as well.

I've received a Donnay X-P Dual racket as a gift. The string tension range on it, however, says 50 +/- 10. The reference range according to Donnay USA is 55 +/- 5. Is this a printing error or can rackets have varying tension recommendations in the same model line similar to how weight, sw, and stiffness may vary?

by Donnay in general are very conflicting information with regard to stiffness. What's the matter, in the QC, or in different machines, which is measured?

I've brought the racket in question on my previous post to my local tennis shop. He also noticed that a few donnay's he's sold recently also has the same string tension of 40lbs-60lbs as a reference on the racket. Long story short, it's a legit racket. I'll post pictures later.

If so, could you please provide a comparison?

Just received my Gold 99. What is the recommended tension for this frame? On the stick it says 50 +/- 10, TW says 50-60.

I have strung mine with Donnay Hybrid poly/gut at 52/56. Hit for an hour yesterday, decent hit from baselines and volleying. Serving was a bit difficult to generate power. I am not sure if its the string or the tension. I normally play with Dunlop 4D 300T with BHBR/OGSM at 48/46.

Anyone can recommend what string/tension to use? I have the following strings: BHBR, X-One, TNT2, B5E, MB, Lux, BAM, OGSM.

I've picked up 3 Red-94+ in the last few weeks (my first Donnays!). 2 are new from TW and 1 used from this board. I played with them yesterday for the first time and was very pleasantly surprised. Despite being considerably heavier than my Prestige Pro, both in static and swing-weight, they feel any heavier when playing. In fact, one of my frames has a swingweight of 350, which surprised me, but it was still easy to swing.

That leads me to my disappointment though. None of the frames weigh what they are supposed to. The specs on the serials are:

1. 335 308
2. 335 306
3. 335 305

The 2 strung frames currently weigh 355g and the unstrung frame is 340g.

I've found that the new unstrung frame and at least 1 of the strung frames have lead under the bumper, about 10-11" of 1/2" lead. I can't see lead on the third frame.

The third frame (without lead on top) also weighs 355g strung; the same as the frames with lead on top (the leaded frames are 340g unstrung, 355g strung), but I found under the butt cap that some of the foam xenecore is missing from one chamber and has silicon injected instead. That explains why it can weigh the same as the others even without lead on top. I removed plastic from the handle of this NEW frame so I can't see how a customer could have dug out the foam and injected silicon before returning the racket, which was then sold to me. The plastic on handle covers the butt cap, so I can't see how anyone did this besides Donnay.

Of course, the balances are all very different (strung frames, 1 with lead on top, 1 with silicon in handle, are more than 1cm, about 1/2", different).

I'm not sure what to make of all of this, but I'm already debating whether I want to take the time to strip the frames of lead and possibly have to inject silicon into 2 of them, in order to get all 3 to match. I've never bought multiple/matching frames before, and I so I'm disappointed that my first "matching" frames are so different from each other. I had assumed that they would be close and maybe 1-2g of lead here or there could match them.

The other day I played around with my friend's X-Black 94 strung with Wilson Sensation @ 55lbs, with the 10g buttcap.

It was nirvana, just otherworldly stuff. I couldn't miss, and every shot just felt so easy, and effortless. The feel, the control, the spin, the comfort, everything was just perfect.

I just played a few hours and I'm really falling in love with the red-94+s that I just got. Even my hitting partners are noticing more consistency, more spin/better slices, better placement without me even asking them.

I'm still a little bothered that 2 of mine came with lead on top and 1 came with silicon in the handle. I've confirmed with that other 94+ owners do not have lead on top and weigh what the serial number says it should.

The good news is that it definitely looks like the lead is NOT to fix poor QC. The amount of lead on top seems to be exactly the amount my 94+s are overweight.

The other good news is the 1 racket that has silicon in the handle instead of lead on top still plays great (really great!), so I don't think the lead on top is covering up some engineering/performance defect, just like I don't think it is to hide QC issues. So it's a mystery of why there is lead there at all, and why only some have it.

Regardless, these frames are really incredible. The heaviest frame currently has a swingweight of 350 but it swings like something around 320-325. It's still easy to snap my wrist if I want to put a little something more/different on the ball or react to strange bounce, and my OHBH feels wonderful even when returning heavy pace.

The Donnay site lists the recommended tension for the X-Dual Gold and X-Dual Platinum at 50 pounds +/- 5. I found similar changes for the X-Series Red 94 and 99 with printed specs on the racquets listing 55 pounds +/- 5 but later the Donnay site was changed to list 52 pounds +/- 5. They probably found that the racquets needed a lower tension range to play better.

No, Gold was listed as 50 +-5 since the beginning, Donnay's site is weird, their number do not match what's printed on the frame, also, they used to have their own stiffness rating, but now they just use the number from TW... Only one they maintain their own number is on Formula, which they still list as 64.

Donnay has a NEW stamp for the area located on the throat with racket information. I've confirmed this with my local pro shop and have multiple rackets with the same stamping coming directly from Donnay.

Here is a picture of the new stamp:

My Gold 99 also has the new stamp which says 50 +/- 10, does this mean recommended tension is 40-60?

filphil

The new stamp is probably to accommodate poly string users who think that they cannot go below 50lbs because the stick says so. So the recommended tension can be considered 40-60, lower end for poly users, high end for multi/gut users.

What really bothers me about Donnay is that this was done without any prior notice so people panic when they see two similar rackets with different stamping and automatically think of a counterfit product.

I don't have direct experience with Donnay extended frames. From my observation, several junior users who play Silver Lite 27.5" finally end up cutting the length to standard 27". I guess extra length has big impact on racquet balance.

I absolutely love my Donnay X-Red 94+'s. My other rackets haven't been out of the bag much, just some to compare. But I love the Donnays, and I love how easy they swing. My main X-Red94+ that I've been using is 375g (leathergrip, overgrip, lead in the head, dampener, head protection tape) and has a swingweight of 356, but it swings about like my prestige pros that have a 330-335 swingweight.

Also, my elbow is almost steel (Head Extreme MP with Kevlar mains/Poly crosses is no problem), but my wrist is a little sensitive from a previous injury and surgery about 12 years ago.

I have been having some discomfort with the wrist lately and have had to be careful to protect it. I've even had to skip a day or two of hitting last month because I didn't want to risk any further damage/discomfort.

I'm happy to report that the first day I used the Donnays, I had ZERO wrist discomfort after playing. Every time since then, I've paid attention to my wrist and it wasn't a one-time phenomenon; every time I play with the Donnays my wrist feels 100% OK after playing. And my string set up is identical to my previous main rackets.

I've been playing the Dark Red for 1.5 years. I love it, like I really love it. It's really quite powerful, soft on the arm (good flex), and has great access to spin, it's a shame Donnay discontinued them.
The only thing I don't like about it, when you add weight to butt, the weights seem to be a tiny bit smaller than the opening, so it feels like it's rattling around in there.

I would absolutely recommend you grab those while you can.
