In 2010, Nadal dropped several spots in the ranking too, and went on to become the first male player to win slams on clay, grass and hard-court all in a calendar year. Ranking clearly doesn't matter that much to Nadal. :p

(Also, you're not the first person to say this, many commentators have said it months before)

i'm afraid we already heard it before, several times (there, for instance)... but it's still a likely and pleasant scenario, so ok for a new thread ! ;)

That's why he demanded a 2 year ranking system when he was on the ATP council.

Guess Rafael "The Impossible" Nadal finds himself in a seemingly impossible scenario, being the second ranked spaniard despite holding a major over the soon-to-be top ranked spaniard.

I doubt Nadal cares about that right now. I think he may have accepted that most likely Ferrer will pass him in the first few months.

Nadal worried about his form, knees and how far he goes in the event.

Good detective work. Perhaps a few people in the tennis world might have noticed that Ferrer is within 200 ranking points of Nadal, but you have obviously combined that information with research into the number of ranking points awarded for performance in ATP tournaments, and then cross referenced that with a calendar showing that there will be ATP events held this year.

Yea I'm sure Nadal is really upset and nervous about that since we know Ferrer is such a big threat to the top tournaments.

Whats even more pathetic is Nadal hasn't played in 7 months yet everyone is still behind him barring Fed, Nole and Murray.

That won't be the case if Nadal doesn't come back to defend his points. It takes a year to see the real significance of the rankings system.

If Nadal goes down to #5, he will have to play likely 3 of the top 4 players. Imagine Nadal's Wimbledon and USO draws. Play Federer in the quarters, Murray in the semis and Djokovic in the finals.

Maybe but Ferrer is not young, it remains to be seen if he will defend his 2012 points (he had a brilliant year by his standards). I bet he won't. I really can't see him repeat a semi at both USO and RG for instance.

Ehh... If Nadal is healthy he can take out Fed and Murray no problem. Nole will present more of a problem but thats also dependent on his level too. Nole hasn't been able to duplicate his 2.0 2011 form. A form which he will be dependent upon to beat a healthy Nadal.. When Nole's level dropped, Nadal beat him 3 times in a row (should have been 4 if not for his choke in Australia this year)

 Nadal needs 5 sets to take out Federer off clay, barring their AO 2012 meeting which easily could've gone to 5 sets. It's not a stroll in the park by any means. And Murray is a completely different player to the corpse Nadal beat up at the 2011 USO. You're going to see that the next time they meet on hardcourts. Murray stomped him in their last meeting. Nadal took 4 points in that final set.
Del Potro is also going to provide a very stern challenge now that he's regained his form. Not fully but he's getting there.
Nadal also didn't choke AO 2012. He was lucky even to take the match to a 5th set. He was down 3-4 and 0-40 in the 4th set. It was a miracle he even managed to get it to 5 sets which showed his warrior mentality. Regardless Djokovic still broke his serve twice back despite being 2-4 down in the 5th and shattered Nadal's dreams yet again.
Nadal got Djokovic on clay. Great for him. But the season includes hardcourts and grass. And Nadal's grass form is seriously beginning to suffer much like it did Federer when Federer got older. Nadal's hardcourt talents are respectable but he hasn't won a Masters since 2009 Indian Wells. Djokovic is racking up hardcourt Masters titles which shows the difference in hardcourt talent between the two. Clay is Nadal's domain but as history proves, Nadal has yet to defend a single title off clay in his 10 year career. Djokovic's normal level is still good enough to wipe out Nadal on hardcourts. AO is the proof. Djokovic had 1 day rest and was tired. Nadal had 2 days rest and was extremely determined. Nadal won the first set and then got stomped in the next 2. His 4th set was a miraculous display of courage but again, he couldn't sustain it in the 5th and Djokovic took him out. Same thing will happen off clay.

No point trying to have a meaningful discussion with 90's ****. He thinks Federer is a complete mug and completely unworthy of surpassing Godpras.

Which is of course preposterous.

Well, MDL (the guy who compiled the list), has only mustered up 292 posts in his 3.5 years on this form. I guess he has more of a life outside tennis than you :)

Taking out someone no problem is beating him 7-6 6-1 6-1 or 6-4 6-3 6-3, Fed can still push Nadal (and thus tire him out) and Murray has improved since 2011 so yes if Nadal gets to #5 beating Fed and Murray back-to-back with Novak waiting in the final would be a tough scenario for him off clay.

Sure Nadal beat 3 times in a row but that was on clay, whenever Nadal returns he'll still be the big favourite against anyone on clay, that won't change anytime soon but it doesn't make him a favourite against Novak in AO, USO or even Wimbledon (even though he's a better grasscourter overall).

Regarding 2012 AO, I could just as easily say that Novak should have wrapped up that match in 4 sets.

You heard it here first.

You are seriously deluded if you think Nadal would be bothered by seeing Ferrer ahead of him in the rankings. Nadal would take a bullet for Ferrer.

Totally agree. It is bad enough for these elite players to have to face two of the others back to back, but if you have to run the guantlet of facing three of them in a row, on a surface that you are least comfortable on, the challenge is not a walk in the park.

If Nadal does drop to five after AO, he won't be gaining any ground until after RG, since he has a massive amount of points to defend. There is strong likely hood that going into the second half of the season, he would regularly have to go through potentially a much tougher draw, if its is Federer, Murray, Djokovic in any order.

Can Nadal actually be the number 5 at AO? If his 90 Doha points drop off for instance? And Ferrer plays Sydney as well, or is the draw made before Sydney's finished?

Funny how Talk Tennis members want Nadal to be ranked #5 so badly. Even funnier when they realise it makes no difference as Nadal STILL racks up the slams. :p

I hope this happens. We could see Djokovic-Nadal in the quarterfinals, for example. It would make for an interesting tournament.

Nope. Ferrer's ranking points total cannot change before the AO.

OTOH, Nadal could widen the gap by improving his result in Doha.

now this took some brainpower.
Brain power is in short supply around here - so when in Rome.......

In all fairness, when I posted this thread, there weren't any that had anything about Nadal/Ferrer in the title. I don't read every frigging post on the board you know.

I play tennis, rather than post endlessly about it.

:). Nadal has not played since last spring and his missing his second grand slam in a row. it's pretty clear he is going to fall down the rankings. cheers.

Isn't it already safe to say Ferrer will be ahead of Nadal in the rankings by the end of AO considering he will forfeit his slam final points?
