definetely 2006 with 12 titles and 95-5 match record that was incredible..

this season could have been easily the best personal season ever if he had beaten nadal after taking the first set, but still it is one of the best ever..

if doesn't count of course.. he had some chances in the final 2006, no doubt.. Nadal still deserved to win though. I'd go with 2006 as well, because 2005 wasn't as good in Slams, but was a very high level of play as well. 2004 he should have done better at both the Olympics and Roland Garros

2006 - it is a sorry shame that I have not watched Roger play live in person yet. Now that he is ExFed. But hopefully, I'll be able to catch him at the USO this summer.

Federer won three of the four Grand Slam singles tournaments for the second consecutive year and ended the year ranked World No. 1, with his points being several thousand points greater than World No. 2 Nadal's total.[30] Federer won the year's first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, by defeating Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis. In March, Federer successfully defended his titles at the Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California and the Sony Ericsson Open in Key Biscayne, Florida, and became the first player ever to win the Indian Wells-Key Biscayne double in consecutive years. Federer then started the clay-court season by reaching the final of the ATP Masters Series event at Monte Carlo losing in four sets to Rafael Nadal. He then reached the Inter****onali BNL d'Italia in Rome where he lost to Nadal in an epic five-set match that culminated in a decisive tiebreak.[31] Federer chose not to defend his title at the Hamburg Masters, where he had won in the previous two years. At the French Open Federer advanced to the final for the first time but lost to defending champion Nadal in four sets. Although the clay Grand Slam title eluded him, Federer became one of only two active players who had reached the finals of all four Grand Slam singles tournaments, the other being Andre Agassi.[32]
Federer entered Wimbledon as the top seed and reached the final without dropping a set. There, Federer beat Nadal in four sets to win the championship.[33] This was Federer's fourth consecutive Wimbledon title. He then started his North American tour and won the Rogers Cup in Toronto, defeating Richard Gasquet of France in the final. In the year's last Grand Slam tournament, the US Open, he defeated American Andy Roddick in four sets for his third consecutive title at Flushing Meadows. During the open era, 2006 is the only year in which same man (Federer) and woman (Justine Henin) reached the finals of all four Grand Slams. At the year-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, Federer defeated defending champion David Nalbandian in one of his three round robin matches and Nadal in the semifinals. Federer then defeated American James Blake 6–0, 6–3, 6–4 in the final to win his third Masters Cup title. During the year, Federer lost to only two players: Nadal in the French Open, Rome, Monte Carlo, and Dubai finals; and Andy Murray in the second round of the Masters Series tournament in Cincinnati. The Cincinnati loss to Murray was Federer's only straight-sets loss of the year and the only tournament out of 17 in which he did not reach the final.

It's a toss up for me between 2006 and 2007:

2006 - Federer's best year in terms of titles. He won 3 majors, 4 MS titles, reached almost every final you can imagine, and just plain ruled.

2007 - The 3 usual majors, only 2 MS titles, and some uncharacterstic losses. So why do I even consider it on par with 2006? Because of Fed's 1st win over Nadal on clay. It was the 1st time Fed beat Nadal on all 3 surfaces.

After those years:

2005
2004
2008
2009 (so far it's the worst but he can still accomplish a lot this season).

2007 was almost the same as 2006. If it wouldn't be for Cañas (which I doubt could have been normal conditions), he would have probably won the KB-Miami Double again

and ı think roger will win last two slam in 2009

If he won the gold medal and made at least the semifinals that year (which he probably could have, he was a pretty decent clay court player back then, he had a few masters I believed on clay). I think you can argue that was his greatest year as a pro.

So far, RFederer's been improving each year, so his best level of play is clearly 2013. I don't think RFederer has ever been particularly entertaining, so it's difficult to say which year he was the most entertaining, so probably any year before he made the decision to become a professional tennis player. :p

Safin at AO : had match point
Gasquet at Monte Carlo : had match point
Nadal at french open
Nalbandian at WTF : 2 points away from the win

2006 of course was unreal

agree with Nathaniel, AO 2007 his tennis was perfect, didn't lose any set the whole tournament

2004,2005 and 2007 had better competition than 2006. yes even 2007 because nadal was emerging as a serious threat to federer(see wimby 2007) but he still managed to hold him off and djokovic was emerging as well starting to beat nadal and federer(see miami and montreal), being consistent is slams losing only to nadal and federer, reaching the top 3 and of course pushing federer in his first ever grand slam final. so IMO 2007 had better competition than 2006. i am a die hard fed fan but even i have to admit that 2006 was not so great competition wise. but i still do not see djokovic achieving a 92-5 record given his losses to lesser players especially this year

Weak era bro.

I didn't know a couple of months can decide about an era. I guess this tough era began in July 2008. It got way tougher after January 2010 and then impossible after July 2012. No wonder prime 32-year old Federer can't win anything these days.

Federer's record in 2007 didn't slip relative to 2006 because of an increase in competition. Djokovic did make his breakthrough into the bigtime in '07, but he only beat Federer once that year. Federer's 2007 record was worse because he lost twice to Canas, twice to Nalbandian, and once to Volandri; by contrast, his only losses in 2006 were four to Nadal and one to Murray.

I think I agree with you on all accounts. I sure enjoyed Fed racking up the titles in the subsequent years, but I'm assuming that you picked 2003 as the "most entertaining" version of Fed because he was so much more of an all court player that year and was really outstanding at the net.

I think Fed's level of play was higher in '06 than in '05. Fed was at his highest physical level in '05, which made his play a little more powerful and bombastic to watch, but I think it was in '06 that he really found his form as a competitor. It's like Michael Jordan, another GOAT candidate. Jordan found his athletic peak in '92, but perhaps peaked as a player in '96, when he knew the game's ins and outs well enough to be in control of any situation at any time.

Based on level of play, 2006 .... 2005>2007>2004.

Some interesting stats:

http://tennis28.com/slams/games_winpct_yearly_leaders.html

I believe the Ricoh match facts also favour Roger in 2006 over 2005, though I can't be bothered to find them at the moment.

2005 was a lot of fun to watch though, a little more wild than 2006, but a little less secure and I think that's why he played a little safer and found his ultimate balance for the 2006 which is really the Federer I would bank on if I had to bring an iteration back to compete today right here right now.

Ask yourself, would you really take 2005 Fed over 2006 to compete right? Roger's form during Wimbledon, the US Open and the TMC(WTF) was just absolutely irresistible, and this bled over to AO 2007, culminating in the greatest single stretch of form in Roger's career.

Loving this. I agree basically entirely, and I love how you put it with the part I quoted in bold. The one aspect that did improve for Fed in 06 on a physical level was his endurance and perhaps he wasn't weaker as such physically in 2006 but he expressed himself slightly less exuberantly. However you might indeed be bang on with your assessment.

On the bolded part... Absolutely. I'd take the 05 Fed over the 06 version anytime. I'd think of his playing level and his versatility this way: If Fed got wormholed back in time to the 90's or 80's, which version of him would be most effective? I'd say 05. That version could hang with the best S&V'ers and baseliners regardless of era.

He wasn't wild in 05, he was just ridiculously confident. Confident in swinging for the fences and in going for a wider variety of shots both low-and-high margin (he chipped and charged, S&V'ed often enough at this point, and you could tell by his movement that he was still comfortable with it).

06 pretty much sealed his transition from all-court to predominantly backcourt.

Fed's FH of 2006> 2005. BH 2006>>2005. I guess Fed moved best in 2005 but that's debatable. Overall I'd take the 2006 version.

Sure that's one of the main reasons for it (just look at his play at 2003 Wimbledon compared to the others) but overall I feel that most players (especially great players) were more entertaining in the years when they started having some success but were still unrefined to a degree, like say 2005 Nadal compared to later years, very young Agassi compared to his later punisher high% play, 2007/2008 Novak compared to his later years, young Roddick who just pummeled every FH and serve as hard as he could etc.

Fed in 2003 wasn't a machine like in say 2006, he was still sort of playing to entertain the crowd, was much more of a risk taker, went for some outright ridiculous low% shots, charged the net when he felt like it etc.
