Updated Hitting Video

Here is another video of me on the near court and my buddy on the far court. Like I mentioned before he is definitely the better player, and can attack much better than I can.

But I would think that this video shows that there is something to say for consistency. I know I could flatten out my shots more and hit more penetrating shots. But this is also done at the risk of making more errors, if you notice one of the few shots I don't get back was a dud mishit.

Also my friend who attacks much better and hits more penetrating shots also does misfire and has some miss hits. Not to say that there is anything wrong with his shots, by no means am I referring that. But the point is even he is taking more chances of making errors.

Plus the way he takes my shots off the rise especially with the 1 handed backhand is nowhere near as easy as he makes it look, believe me on that. So for me to go for more penetrating shots against him is not real high % play because I am not that good and his shots are tough to attack.

So if I were to take video of me playing against a player that was not at his level you would see quite a difference. A lot of guys I play will first off be making errors off the jump from my shots, and also be serving up a lot of sitters that I would come in and flatten out and put away.

But my game is built around consistency first and foremost. The attacking only comes when the % of success is high.

Percentage tennis is relative to your ability. If you practiced hitting out of your comfort zone (ie lower trajectory), you'd get better at it and it wouldn't feel like you're taking a risk. Or you can just keep posting more videos of you doing the same thing.

Thats exactly what I am doing is practicing at hitting lower trajectory, which will be tonight I am hitting with a very good consistent player and we will just rally for an hour.

By the way have you posted some video of yourself so I could see how it is done?

How about at the end of the video when we were in a cross court rally. Would you consider those shots that I am hitting a lower trajectory?

Man, if you want to improve that's cool but your threads typically have the theme of "Here is my video, this is why I'm not doing XYZ that people have suggested." There's a whole lot of defensive posturing and not much else.

Nothing has changed here. It seems like you are posting vids to convince yourself what you do is ok. I don't get it really.

You are not preparing for the ball. You do not have the racquet in the neutral position properly. Your feet do not move between balls.

All the same stuff is happening since the last videos you have made.

I agree with Hollywood. It reads like you are being defensive.

Like I said I have been working on lowering trajectory, and I can already do it but not at as high of % that I need to. Also did you notice that I was hitting a lower trajectory at the end of the clip when we were in a cross court rally?

You can call it defensive posturing maybe it is, but I am just giving the reasons that I hit the way that I do. When playing real matches and trying to win you do what works best with what you have. Thats the point I am making, but I am working hard to have more weapons to use.

This video was taken the same night as the others were PP. I am working on everything you have mentioned. But I guess consistent hitting counts for nothing here. I was just trying to make a point that a player should be consistent first and then go for more aggressive style as they get better at it. Which is exactly what I am working on.

I see numerous players at my club that love to blast the big first serve and rip these screaming flat shots that they are not that good at. These are the guys that are stuck at 3.5 for life, because ya they can rip some winners here and there but have never developed a solid consistent game first.

I was about to say your buddy hit some sweet 1 handers... but then he hit the roof!

He does hit some sweet one handers as good if not better than most players I have seen. By the way one of the reasons he hit the roof was because he mistimed the jump of my top spin shot. Which unless you are receiving them they are not as easy as most think people here think they are.

Plus as I tried to point out by attacking like he does is more risky even when you are good at it. He is a good player and can take these balls off the rise very well, but still it is not easy to do every time.

My one-handed BH is at the same level as his (minus the shank).

Seeing is believing, lets see some video of it. I would love to hit top spin loopers to your 1 hander and see if you could hit them as well as my buddy does.

I don't know how to take videos. I don't have a tripod or any equipment and I don't want to ask my partners if they want to be on a video on the Internet. Did you get permission from that guy, BTW?

Try to be a little more proactive and less reactive. It may help take you out of the defensive mindset. In other words, go after that ball and don't wait on it to get to you.

I just put a I phone in a ball basket and turned it on simple as that. And my buddy is fine with showing him on the internet, whats the big deal anyway.

Ok that makes sense.

There is no need to make any points though. This is the technique and tips. Your current technique is inefficient. Thats all Im really looking at. A consistent game comes with that too.

Yes you can hit the ball 8 feet over the net consistently. But your movement and prep is poor and as a result it will not work past a certain level of play.

So take a break from the vids until you can show a change in technique. You don't have to post why you think your game is good or defend anything. You want to get better so thats all that matters.

It's like I told people when I worked in music - if you have to explain to me why your song is good while I listen to it, it probably sucks.

It's just that it may get you to be a more attacking kind of player and not so passive, which in turn may speed up your feet....which will probably be sore at first.

Do you or any of your partners have a I phone? Or are you just another one of the many critics that know all and have this outstanding tennis game but will not post a video for us to see. Surely if your strokes are like Roger Federer's why would you not want to show them.

Feedback is, you hit consistent, you only hit slow topspin moonballs.

I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with video camera of course, but it is a pain to put it up. How do I attach it to a fence? And again, I don't want to ask anyone if he wants to be up on the Internet and invite a series of questions from him. If I have an angle where he is not shown, then it will not be clear if the balls are in or out.

Did you get your partner's permission before you posted the video?

Yaz, who lives near Leed apparently is coming here to San Diego this week and we will be hitting. I should be getting my repaired camera this week. If he wants to be filmed I will film it. I have to figure out a good spot to put the camera because my courts don't have enough length behind the baseline. Directly behind is definitely no good so it might be a weird less than ideal angle or something.

===
tlm, are you able to hit a ball that goes by the opponent if you wanted to?

Set the camera up pointing toward yourself and far enough back to include the net? Then no one else is involved.

How can that help in telling if the balls are good? And my partner may come to the net and into the field of view. Then I will have to edit that stuff out and I have never done that.

Please, behind you, at least 5' high, can be duct taped to the backwall, backfence, and no, you don't have to look into the camera after starting it.
And, don't set up and turn on the camera, then go looking for racket's and tennis balls...:):)

I agree, Sureshs is always clowning, which is fine.

But he also starts a ton of arguments and debates in here about technique. So it would be nice to see him play so we have an idea of his true understanding of this stuff.

I can about guarantee we will never see video of him. He comes firing off with tons of excuses every time we ask. But he has no problem jumping in on other peoples threads. Which is fine. It just seems like logically, if you post in tons of video threads you should get an idea of how to make one of your own. He acts like he has no clue - which I see as an excuse, not a real reason.

My strokes are like Fed but my backhand is better.

Darn this Saturday had to be the Open House day for my son's prospective college before he makes a decision to join. It is going up to 12:45 pm and then there is insane traffic getting out of the lot and of course a shuttle ride to the lot before even getting into the car.

tlm, this is something that I'm also working hard to overcome: your non-hitting arm is inactive mostly.

I believe it helps you get the rotation you need if you get the left arm involved in your forehand stroke.

Can't be specific as I'm trying to overcome the same problem myself with mixed success.

I'm not trying to start anything w/ you but how can you hit through an opponent if it looks like it takes a lot of energy for you hit to hit a ball looks gives the opponent all the time in the world to get to? Even when you hit cross court they casually walk over to the ball, set up and are waiting for it.

That's a serious question. Do you change your technique? Do you swing harder? Put more weight into it? What do you do?

That will not be feasible for me. How long do you guys plan to play? Will you be still around at 2:30 pm?

Idk his schedule or plans. I've never met him before. I don't know if he's a 3.0 or a 4.5. I just like hitting with new people, level doesn't matter. Maybe he won't want to be filmed idk. Maybe leed can tell me what he's about.

In the videos I have shown me and my partner are rallying, we like to have long rallys for practice. Which obviously on this discussion board being able to hit shot after shot without missing does not mean anything.

I would be moving the ball around a lot more and when the opening is there I will flatten my shots out and go for the winner, have done it countless times. But we were not trying to hit winners we were just hitting solid shots back and forth and trying not to miss.

Obviously what I need to do is film hitting with a weaker player that will give me a bunch of sitters that I can rip for winners and then I will be a real tennis player.

Actually, you need to try to hit some faster, lower balls to that same opponent!
Level of opponent has little to do with anything, unless your opponent is 7.0 of course. You guys are close enough.
YOU should hit some fast low, hard groundstrokes, and from 3' behind your service line, if you want to show that you can.

Ya but unless the court is open he will hit the flatter faster shot better, that is what a lot of you don't understand most players would rather hit that shot as opposed to the looping top spin shot.

Yes I know you're not going for winners. Consistency and all that etc etc. I get it. No prob from me.

I was just asking what you do because I've only seen that one swing shape from you which is pretty much geared for high arcing spin type shots.
The way you hold the racquet looks like you can only swing up. I don't see you how you can swing across the body and through the ball.
