Roland-Garros is fast approaching. While all eyes are on the US Open at the moment, Bernard Giudicelli , president of the FFT , Jean-François Vilotte , general manager of the FFT , and Guy Forget , director of Roland-Garros , organized a conference of press Monday. The shocking announcement: the gauge has been reduced to 11,500 spectators per day for this Roland-Garros 2020 . Wheelchair tennis, juniors and qualifications are maintained. But the latter, from September 21, will be played behind closed doors. How will therefore organize the Internationaux de France in Paris this year and at the end of September beginning of October (from September 21 to October 11)? Explanations.

Qualifications, Juniors and Wheelchair tennis maintained, the prize money reworked
While the American federation had chosen to abolish the qualifications for the 2020 edition of the US Open , the FFT decided that there would be many qualifiers from Monday, September 21. Good news for all players who had been deprived of the US Open and who will therefore be able to recover a Grand Slam prize-money. Another very good news, the juniors and the table tennis table are maintained. For the prize-money, note a 30% increase for the 1st round, 27% in qualifying and 38 million euros in prize money in total.

USO would loved to have had fans attend but was forbidden to do so by Governor Cuomo and the NY Health Department, despite the fact that NYC daily cases are far lower than Paris.

NYC: Zero fans.
Paris: 11,500 fans per day X 14 days during a huge spike in cases.

What does it tell us?
It tells us us that the French Federation are willing to sacrifice a few hundred deaths and hospitalizations in order to put on a tournament with fan attendance.

So it's going to be 11,500 fans per day, but what was the allowed number of fans normally?

Idk, I kind of love it. No interruptions, no one giggling when more than 2 slices in a row are hit
To me that's all a part of the experience. I'm the kind of person that needs noise. That's why movies have soundtracks. That's why most people turn on the radio when they get in their car etc. Imagine watching old Federer clips on youtube with no crowd in the background or any of his great victories in the past without the sudden boom from the people when he finally pulls it off. I cant imagine it and don't want to.

Can’t they have the fans inside a bubble for 2 weeks?

It tells us that the French Government has modulated broken its policy on outdoor gatherings.

You are hopelessly confused as usual so we will explain how proper mitigation policy works. Restrictions are loosened only when the case numbers are trending down.

We do not loosen the restrictions on public gatherings at a time when cases are spiking out of control at record numbers.

It tells us that the French government are breaking their own current policy of 5000 people in order to hold the tournament with a much larger crowd. Public safety has been put on the back burner.

Cannot justify zero fans at USO and 100,000 at RG

PARIS, Aug 11 — France is extending a ban on public gatherings of more than 5,000 people to Oct. 30 as coronavirus infections rise sharply, Prime Minister Jean Castex said today.

The reality is that a tennis tournament is an assemblage of public gatherings, so the limit at RG seems a reasonable position to take in view of wider policy.

Australia and New Zealand have a zero tolerance policy. European countries tend now to have a containment policy. Allowing these kinds of audience is now normal.

It's okay if people die, their hearts are pure and their intentions are good.

Players at the USO have talked about how much they enjoy walking around the grounds without encountering fans. Wonder if they’ll feel safe at RG having hundreds of fans around them asking for autographs as they walk to the courts etc. Imagine a fan coughs or sneezes near them...

I just hope an outbreak doesn't occur among the players that causes the tournament to be canceled or it's integrity to take a severe hit. I was very confident that the US Open would run smoothly given the measures but I'm not as confident about the French Open.

No. Containment strategies are practiced during the very earliest stages to try and prevent community transmission. Only a very few countries such as South Korea have had successful containment strategies.

The policy in Paris and most countries is now one of mitigation.

Our Dr Fauci has explained all of this at White House Task Force briefings.

Containment: Rapid containment should start as soon as the first case is detected regardless of the cause, which is most likely to be unknown. It requires skilled professionals to safely implement the necessary countermeasures. Pre-training of these professionals is essential to guarantee the safety and efficiency of the operations.
Control and mitigation: Once the infectious disease threat reaches an epidemic or pandemic level, the goal of the response is to mitigate its impact and reduce its incidence, morbidity and mortality as well as disruptions to economic, political, and social systems.

I used the word in the normal manner, not the American way. In any event, Fauci's been replaced.

The government has the power to make specific derogations to this rule. Last weekend, some rugby games were allowed to take place in front of an audience of 6,500.

I am not defending the decision to have 11,500 people per day for 14 days in attendance, as this is a recipe for disaster considering the current spike. But simply pointing out that, from a regulatory standpoint, the government has the power to do this.

I will be amazed if this tournament goes through to its end.

Not disputing the power of the French government to make the decision. But Bart is claiming that it is somehow part of a coherent public health policy. It is not. It is an abandonment of their public health policy. The USO tournament was held with zero spectators despite NYC being on downtrend for months while Paris is spiking at record levels.

What is wrong with this picture.

Either NYC or Paris got it wrong here.

This is the same tournament that made david ferrer play exactly 2 hours and 1 min in the rain.

If he played 1:59 they would of had to give a 50% ticket refund, if under an hour a full refund.

Can't wait for the multiple vaccine doses per annum so we can finally go about freely! Yay! Blacks, Native Americans, and the elderly to the front of the line because they are at greatest risk for bubonic plague 2.0 and must be protected! BLM rules!

How dare tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists suggest Gates is a eugenicist and is trying to cull the population beginning with the "least desireables"! Shame on them! Blacks and Native Americans will be getting priority vaccination!

It is weird to watch
It's on in my living room right now ONLY because I'm a fan of the game. That's the only reason why. Almost out of obligation. I'm not enjoying it or paying much attention. Not much of a WTA fan, but I normally watch the tail end of slams on the women's side. Couldn't tell you a single detail about the match except the score and what they're wearing.
