Damn it's been so long since I've seen Fed and this is all I get. At least he's likely to be thru.

Nice job Feds. Excellent 1st set, rather sloppy in the 2nd, but enough to get the job done in straights. Perhaps the best performance we could have wanted to see on his return.

Zverev still has some lessons to learn: improve the serve, and how to deal with dropshots. He'll get there though, enough time on his side. ;)

Good 6 out of 10. I hope he notches it up to 9+ the rest of the way in steady increments and wins the title, leading to his 2nd RG title followed by an 8th Wimbledon title for his 19th Slam and then he wins OG and he's tired but manages to defeat Novak in 5 sets at the US Open and then retires causing nadalovic fans to rejoice except he says "gotcha" 'cause he trolled and he cums back and wins the YEC and then retires for real until next RG where he tries to defend his title but fails because Nadal too strong on his way to losing in his attempt at la decima to Djokovic, which is followed by a real retirement from Hafa.

He gets up for the youngsters...

*yes I know how that sounds :D
He wants to establish a mental edge and very motivated to do so. Its amazing to watch. Hopefully Thiem with his 2nd crack at this wizardry won't fall under Fed's spell and we'll have a match. Don't see Thiem in current form standing a chance against Fed in form like this.

That's what I think is gonna happen too.

I didn't see most of the Federer-Zverev match except for some of the second set but no problemo for Federer. Federer may be almost 35 and past his prime and he may have trouble in best of five vs Djokovic because of that but he knows how to teach these upstarts a lesson. He'll do the same to Thiem as long as his back continues to be ok. Good job Fed. Keep going old man!

Nice to see Federer back on court. When I saw Severin this morning, I knew he wasn't there to help Federer pack his bags. I hope the back and knee hold up, so he can continue to play catch up.

Nice win.

And people mock me when I say Federer is primarily a tactician.. lol they can all go F themselves.

Well done Fed.
Yeah. He dissected Zverev with perfect tactics, intent, and execution. Thought Zverev might be able to apply the tried and true backhand formula, but the new Fedberg game just allows Fed to keep out of protracted backhand exchanges.

Thiem is good on clay but still makes life too difficult for himself too often. Why? He lacks patterns.

Federer plays to patterns and is quite cerebral.

Thiem just kinda... plays. If Thiem learns to add real structure to his raw clay game, he can improve yet another clear level on the surface (and just in general).

In other words, he's a very talented player on the surface but still a rough diamond and "just a kid, playing some tennis."

(Yes I know he's well into his 20s.)

The match tomorrow should be fascinating.

In form like this? Ha ha. He'll dismiss Thiem faster than he dismissed Zverev. Thiem has nothing to trouble Federer with, even a Federer who is at 70-75%.

Thiem will like the guile game with Fed. I expect Fed to just try to rush and pressure Thiem's movement; which looks improved since their last match.

Its clay cc and I must say Thiem looked to outclass Zverev in movement in their last match. Somehow I think Thiem will find his better level for the match. Thiem has not played well in a while, so its hard to imagine him troubling Fed. If he could get some pressure on Fed then something might happen.

I'm not sure what you're seeing with Thiem but if Federer is feeling ok, he should be able to handle Thiem in straights, clay or no clay.

I'm not sure whether I can agree with you on this.

Yes, Zverev played a lot better in the second set, but the stats are on the positive side for him due to one very sloppy game from Fed where he handed back the break throwing around UEs like confetti.
Not to mention Fed's lacklustre game whenever having BPs.
It could well have been a 6-3, 6-3 drubbing.

Anyways, Zverev has plenty of time to improve. Like I said, he'll get there for sure.

As for Fed's chances against Thiem, I think it's better not to underestimate the Austrian - but I'm pretty sure Fed and his team know this all too well, too.

Thiem is a much better player than kid Zvrv.. just based on that, Fed can expect a tough match..

I wouldn't say Thiem is that much better than Zverev just like Goffin is slightly better than Thiem due to experience and age. I am sure by the time Zverev gets to Thiem's age, their level of accomplishments will be similar.

I don't think Thiem will be that much trouble for Roger. The Thiem train lost a lot of steam after the end of February.

well after Feb, Thiem ran into Tsonga, Novak, NAdal, Kohli.. nothing much he could do there..

but the loss to Delpo should concern Thiem..
