Thought i'd do a thread for the Brisbane International. Sorry if it's a bit early, as a Brisbanite, i'm just very excited for it ;)
Great tournament for the 2017 year to begin on.
Five top 10 players.
Seeded players: Raonic, Wawrinka, Nishikori, Thiem, Nadal, Pouille, Dimitrov and Ferrer.
Many fantastic unseeded players like: Tomic, Simon, Troicki, Querrey and Dolgopolov.

Fantastic doubles draw including: Number 1 Mahut partnering #2 Herbert, defending champs and ATP Finals winners Kontinen/Peers, Klaasen/Ram, Nestor/Roger Vasselin.
Nishikori and Thiem are playing together! As are Lopez and Nadal!

Raonic is the defending champ where he defeated Federer who was the defending champ in 2015 where he won his 1000th match.

Great news, Kokkinakis practiced at QTC (Queensland Tennis Centre) today. John Millman did too, both have had a 2016 marred with injuries. Both got to play the Olympics though.
They are both still deciding if they will play the event. There are 3 wildcards for this event and none have been announced yet.

Would be great to see the Kokk return!

RaoMUG, #3 in the world, must defend his only 2016 title.

#WeakEraDefined

Wawrinka likes this week on the calendar but usually in Chennai. Let's hope he does just as well in Brisbane.

Wait, where's Federer? Playing Hopman Cup instead? Seems odd voluntarily to risk his #16 seed spot for the AO. Mind you, I guess it doesn't make that much difference these days.

He's guaranteed three matches and possibly a fourth if they make the final and no b2b play until possibly the final. It's a smart move for someone with zero match play in six months.

Except he decided to skip Brisbane back in July before he ended his season ;) Not that it matters, is definitely the right move and it allowed Brisbane the chance to secure Nadal + Stan.

Loaded draw except for Fed abscence. Only sketchy seed is Ferrer. Best group of seeds ever?

Seems like Brisbanian might be a cooler name! ;)

It's a draw worthy of at least being a 500 event. Hope they upgrade for next year and possibly get an even stronger field.

Elias Ymer gets a main draw wildcard thanks to an agreement between Tennis Australia and IMG. IMG gave Kokkinakis a wildcard into the 2015 Miami Open and in return they got a wildcard. Bris tournament director said they could've used it last year but didn't so Elias gets it this year.

It's the same hing that's happening with Vekic/Stan. Vekic gets a wildcard into Brisbane and an Aus female (likely Ash Barty (let's be honest)) will get a wildcard into a tournament run by Starwing organiation.
So for those wondering, it wasn't officially some deal to get Stan here. An Aussie will benefit at some point from this.

Millman withdraws with his ongoing hip injury which means the wildcard will go to Sam Groth. Also, Kokkinakis decided to only play doubles this week and will instead start his singles comeback next week in Sydney. Millman will also start his singles comeback in Sydney next week.

So the 3 wildcards go to Jordan Thompson, Sam Groth and Elias Ymer.

It's a shame Millman can't play in his home tournament. Groth is a good substitute though. Hopefully he has a better season this year.

ETA: I was out at the Brisbane International this morning and saw Dimitrov practising. Managed to get a few glimpses of Stan through the Pat Rafter Arena door, unfortunately (but understandably) it's closed so the top names can practise in peace. I also saw Jordan Thompson and Lleyton Hewitt. I thought I saw Tomic off in the distance but can't be sure.

I have no issue with the WC swapsies. It makes much more sense for TA to be able to give WCs to our most promising players to tournaments around the world rather than give WCs to all Aussies for a few tournaments here. I'm just sceptical that Vekic's status as Stan's partner has absolutely nothing to do with her being the player to receive the WC.

Brisbane plays nothing like the Australian Open if I'm not mistaken. So doesn't really matter who wins this apart from getting some match practice.

Good showing by Aussie 16yo Destanee Aiva in first round women's qualies. Lots of potential so hopefully she can maintain her recent good form before her main draw AO debut in a few weeks.

This really should be an ATP 500. INSANE first round match ups.

Nadal v Dolgo
Dimitrov v Johnson
Ferrer v Tomic!!!
Pouille v Simon!

Some crazy 2R too
Likely Stan v Troicki
Raonic v Querrey

Projected QF based off seeds sound like something from a Masters QF
Raonic v Nadal
Thiem v Dimitrov
Ferrer v Nishikori
Pouille v Stan

Nishioka, Kozlov, Donaldson, Fratangelo, Harrison, Taifoe, and Minaur; not bad, not bad.

Didn't know Nadal was playing in Brisbane, why so? The fast courts definitely won't suit him, and Dolgo as your opening match is certainly tough...

Good up and comers....but missing Shapo and Tsitsi! Then I would be extra happy. Too bad ADM has to go against #1 seed in R1.
For this draw, Go Foe!
Too bad he won.:eek::D

1ST ROUND QUALIFYING
(WC) AUS Alex De Minaur DEFEATS (1) KAZ Mikhail Kukushkin 64 76(9-7)

Kozlov is gone, but Taifoe, Donaldson, and Nishioka are one match away from the main draw too.:p De Minaur has Taifoe next.

Young Artist looks fit - 2017 year or the Grigolo

Vamos

Could you be replaced by mechanical brain?.... A simple one should do ....

All it would need to poast would be 'Cool story bro' and something dull about DIMi(I'm a stranger to the practice court)trov. And we'd be all set!

Think of the time you'd save ! :D

The draw:

C090-OxUcAAPAJm.jpg:small
Thiem has a great draw especially with the bye in this one. Dimitrov would be a challenging QF, but could have been Nadal or Pouille so Greegor will be a great match. Raonic and Nadal in the same quarter is rough. Tomic has a beautiful draw and nothing wrong with potential QF with the fragile Nishikori. Pouille will have to work hard, but has a chance to make a run at this one if the Stanimal continues to sleep.

Once Qualifiers are determined and placed we should have up to three more great matches with the younglings taking on beatable tour mainstays. Unbelieveably good field compared to Doha.

Dimitrov vs Thiem looks like a great quarterfinal match! Very excited for a new season. Grigor has very few points to defend before the summer swing. Time to make a push in the rankings.

Grigolo needs to harness his offcourt Johnson and focus on his oncourt Johnson rival 1R to get to within one more round closer to Thiemination.

Despite Doha having #1 and #2, Brisbane thread leads posts 44-3.:D Nice to see good tournament getting some attention rather than the top 2 only, geriatric event in Doha.

Would be nice. Dolgo tweeted a picture of his hand sometime recently though, and he had an awful looking blister in the palm of his hand. If it's still there then I imagine it could impact his play.

in spoilers cause it's kinda gross.

Damn, that would have to heavily impact his training schedule. Advantage Nadal I'd say

Seen pretty much every male player now and been lucky to have spoken to a few, but haven't seen Tomic, Nadal and Raonic. I believe Nadal is flying here tonight and Raonic got in today. Unsure on Tomic, read he's been training at the Gold Coast. I'll see him tomorrow for sure considering he'll be playing about 10m from where I'm based. Should be a good day, Tomic v Ferrer, Puig v Svitolina and Stosur v Muguruza.
