Anyone have IBS? What are you supposed to eat?

$7200 worth of tests later, the dog gastroenterologist (serious) says my dog just has IBS and can't eat commercial dog food. None of the prescription food helped, but homemade food seems to be better.

Still though, she has diarrhea pretty much every day. Every source I find on what to feed contradicts the last one.

E.g. One site says eat a ton of fiber, the next one says don't eat fiber. One says probiotic foods like sauerkraut good, the next says probiotic foods bad. Diary is apparently bad, but when she was really sick, plain greek yogurt was one of like 3 things I could get her to eat and digest. What about wheatgrass? Is fodmap a real thing?

Anyone here know about IBS? What type of foods help keep you poopin' normal?

IBS is stress. Food helps, but take of stress as well. I'm guessing this applies to dogs too.

What kind of commercial dog food was she eating?

Canine Caviar has a sensitive stomach line. It's expensive but good.

My favorite is Zignature.

Even Blue Buffalo is just OK, anything less than that and you are asking for a sick dog.

$7200? Consider insurance.

A dozen different kinds, at least. Orijen, Acana, Open Farm, Go, Evangers, Purina pro, Rx diets, chicken, beef, fish, rabbit, duck, etc. etc.

Homemade with raw green tripe, mackerel, liver, eggs, quinoa, flax seed meal, boiled veggies, goat's milk, turmeric, etc. has worked the best. I just need to fine tune it. Going to try psyllium husk to maybe bulk those stools up.

Dogs that cry/whine when you leave, or that "chase" or try to lick their acral area, are sometimes prescribed fluoxetine (Prozac) by vets

which prescription did you try?
when my dog had diarrhea and soft stool for months, i switched him to:
* Hill's Prescription Diet i/d Digestive Care
Dry and wet variety... his stool has been firm ever since.

metamucil certainly works on me :p

What was your experience with using pumpkin?
my dog didn't have great results mainly because he wouldn't eat all of it

That's the exact one I tried, 2 different times. Wah wah.

What to eat depends on the type of IBS one has. Some health professionals recommend trying a low FODMAP diet as a start and see how you go from there. You are not meant to be on it long term, as you may be eliminating healthy nutrients, but you start off with it to reduce the symptoms and go from there.
I find over consumption of high fibre foods can be a problem as well as foods that are generally harder for the body to manage such as garlic and onions, certain citrus foods and certain dairy products.
I find white rice healing and fruits like kiwi and papaya and paw paw good.

Try feeding her something light and safe in the morning to warm her digestive tract. After that avoid eating problematic food. After harsh physical activities feed her a little so her digestive tract doesn't get stress over not receiving enough calories over the calories bunt. Over time there should be less diarrhea as there's less stress overall.

Try giving your dog probiotics mixed into the dog food.

I know someone who did this for their dog's digestive problems and it seemed to cure it after a few weeks.

I give her the powder kind and also foods like saurerkraut, greek yogurt, goat's milk, cottage cheese.

My personal belief is that there's no way bacteria can survive after being dehydrated and left sitting in a warehouse for months. Gotta be a scam.

Depends on the type of IBS but a low Fodmap diet for a while could be useful and plenty of meditation and even hypnosis. Sometimes eating too much fibre or taking too much vitamin C and garlic can cause problems as well.
Many find eating papaya, paw paw and kiwi fruit very soothing

I have a problem with food that is both greasy and spicy hot - but that might be true of most people’s digestive system. Also, my stomach doesn’t like meat and seafood that is even slightly not fresh.

First, I'm terribly sorry to hear your dog is suffering. I understand the desire to try every solution to make them better. Not sure if ginger will necessarily cure the root problem but maybe a little bit to supplement the food could help provide some relief.
