Asics Gel Resolution 1 = sore pinky toe saga

After about 2-3 months of wearing the Asics Gel Res 1 my right pinky toe is begging me to switch shoes. After the first couple of times I attributed the phenomenon to not breaking in the shoes enough. After ~3 months now, I think the shoes are broken in but the problem still exist. The rubbing becomes minimal if I wear two pairs of socks but then my feet get extremely hot and after awhile the rubbing begins again. I have worn Reebok Out Aced with no problems, but I really want to stick with Asics for it's cushioning. I am open to new suggestion though.
Questions are:
Do the new Gel Res II have a bigger toe box compare to the GR I?
Does anything other shoe is Asics line feel comparable but with the bigger toe area?
Anyone else have this problem with the GR I and what shoe did they eventually switch to?

Is it the seam of the socks that's causing the rubbing? If so, either try to find a pair that don't have such a pronounced join (I have some Thorlos which are very good in this area), or try wearing your socks inside out. Another option would be to put athletic tape on before you play, or a specialist blister plaster (Compeed is my favourite, though wouldn't be the cheapest solution).

It's not the seams in the sock that are causing the problems. I can actually feel the indentation in the shoe where my right pinky toe is pressing against the synthetic material/vinyl. I am going to try the athletic tape and see how that works. Maybe its just time for some new shoes.

You can decrease the pressure on your toe by skipping the first set of lace eyelets. ***** sporting goods has a lacing guide here Its the last one down "Wide Feet"

Would decrease from the glove like feel. Although I have a wide forefoot my heel and the the rest of my feet are pretty narrow. Just pondering since the glove like fit is why I really like this shoe.

I had this problem for a few months with my pair of Resolution I. The tape I used would slip off so I wrapped a thin bandaid strip on top of the tape to keep it in place and to prevent that sticky adhesive from getting stuck on my skin. It is an extra step, but helped me tremendously. Now my pair is pretty loosened up so I don't have to do this anymore. I didn't mind taping up my toe though - the shoes are worth it!

imo, the toeboxes on the gel res are very poorly designed. the plasticky material on the outside is too stiff out of the box, and when you crease that area while playing, the indentation really pinches in places. the res 1 had big seams that stuck out in those areas, and those really rubbed/pinched. after a couple months of play, the toebox was finally pliable enough to flex and bend normally, and they became sooo comfy.

the res 2 has an EVEN STIFFER outer toe box that I hate, but at least the seams on the inside are covered up by a thin piece of fabric.

i should add that i think the rest of the shoe is so good that I will still use them for a long time.

Yeah, I also had the same problem to tell you the truth. I wore them on my carpet and they felt fine, but after playing a match that pinky toe was just bothering me. I couldn't return the shoes as they were worn, but what I did that seemed to work for me was I'd stuff like and old towel and make sure it filled the whole toe area and then I would put a tennis ball right after it to keep the towel from coming out and to keep the pressure. I did this after I played in them and before. For example I play Wed and Sat. I stuffed them after I played on Sat and left them there till I wore them on Sat and then again repeated the process. There's no way to stretch out that area easily it not like you can make you toes expand. Worked for me and it's not a hassles take like 5 mins and just keep then in there. This is my tip I know exactly what you're going through. It's hard finding shoes that fit me the way I want them to. I don't have wide feet, but I do like a nice roomy toebox, but seems the big guys making those popular shose think otherwise that everyone is the same.

It might just be from the hard rubber on the outside. Just from testing the shoe--I wanted to like it--it felt stiff and I could tell it would rub my feet bad.

The Asics with the straight synth-leather uppers (I wear the Rebel, but the Enqvist is similar) are VERY comfortable. The leather molds to your feet better, too.

Unrelated to the Asics, I used to get blisters a lot while playing. Dri-Fit socks (or equivalent for other brands) fixed that right up...no more wet, sweaty feet.

Is this happening on both feet or just the right one? They fit narrow--you may opt for 1/2 larger size the next time around. I happened to like the shoe myself.

Yes they are stiffer but the toe box is a lot roomier. Or go up 1/2 a size with Thorlos-level3

Thanks guys for the advice. Am trying both solutions right now until the shoe stretches. It's actually just the right shoe so I couldn't go up 1/2 size on both feet. Actually the size that I have now are perfect on the left one. So the GR II have a bigger toe box?

the res 2 has a different shape toe box. it tapers less than the old one, so it is roomier laterally. vertically, it is still pretty tight, and the pinching plastic junk is still a problem until broken in. i just kept bending and rebending the toe box yesterday while watching tv, and it feels better now.

I had a toe problem on my Resolutions but it was on the big toe side. It disappeared when I took out the stock insoles and replaced them with Superfeet insoles.

You could use wooden shoe strecher to soft it up. It will take a 2-3 days.

Yes the density of insole can make a difference. I had the same problem initially(first couple of time out) with the res 1. The res2 is much better for my big toe.

fyi, bending the toe box over and over whilst watching tv did the trick. i just loosened the last lace and bent them just like they would flex when pushing off during play. my gel res 2's were more pliable and did not pinch tonight. success!
