Cable Grommets

Interesting question. The Unique Sampras dampeners are clearly based on a cable grommet design, if not being exactly the same thing.

I hit a small local old-school electronics shop and cable grommets were clearly not their strong point. I found some sizes that were smaller than the Sampras, but with roughly the same proportions. These did not fit tightly enough in the racquet.

I also found some that were slightly larger. While my initial impressions were that these would not be a suitable substitute, I was pleasantly surprised when I used them. They conformed to the strings and made an oval shape that actually made contact with more string than the Sampras; the open section closed up once the grommets were applied. I started placing them in racquets I was stringing and got favorable response. They feel pretty much the same to me -- maybe a tad "tighter".

I already tossed the packages and do not recall the dimensions of the open center section; I do believe they were 3/4 inch across in diameter though. The brand was "Dayton", if I remember correctly.

Edit: 1/16 inch is what you want for the slot/groove on the sides of the grommet.
