Can federer win the french

I think this year will be the year roger federer wins the french. He was upset last year by the great Guga but federer was far from his best (something we don't see to often). I mean He beat coria in the the Madrid final last year and he is also under the guidence of a new coach (Tony Roach). If Federer doesn't win it will be either: Coria, Gaudio double, Moya, Naldandian or Safin :D

I think Fed needs to get into a better shape if he wants to win it. He doesn't play a lot of tough matches in slams since he wins most of them very easily, but in Paris he will have to go though couple of 5 hour 5 setters with the best on clay. In his match against Marat in AO, he looked a little tired in the fifth set and that is not a good sign of his form for French. So, if he works really hard before clay court season and will be willing to perhaps sacrifice his Wimbledon chances and will be willing to work to win 7 matches then he might just do it.
However, I would put my money on Coria, Ferrero, Nadal and Safin and maybe Nalbandian, however clay is not his best surface.

off course fed can win the franch, but i think he will need a racquet with a bigger head to do that. Sampras said after his career ended he had regret he didn't use a bigger racket at the french.

Well, I dont think there is a major that Federer can't win so I see no reason why he can't win the French this year. That's not to say he will however. Still, unlike Sampras and almost every other player who has had some chance of winning all 4 majors -apart from Borg- Federer did grow up playing on clay so he has got the court sense that players like Roddick and Hewitt don't have and Agassi had to learn.
Also, if they have one of those dry summers which seem to favour the more aggressive players (Henman, Rafter, Sampras all getting to semis in recent memory) then he might do extra well and, once again, he has that clay court experience they all lacked.

That was in Hamburg:
Madrid is indoors, hard-court in October and the winner last year was Marat Safin ;)

To answer the question:
Yes, he can, but he will have to put some effort into it. And the way things developed in Australia might provide the necessary motivation.

Some effort??? What effort? I thought you don't need it at the French.

Historical note here:

Jim Courier played with the same frame that Sampras did when he won his two French Open titles. It ain't the size of the head, it's how you use it.

What stopped Sampras from winning the French? IMO, three things.

1. He insisted on playing baseline tennis for most of his attempts.

2. Physically, while in great shape, he didn't have the endurance needed.

3. Pure bad luck.

Sampras can say a lot of things how he should have done. The fact is he never had a game to win the French. Roger does have a game to win on clay, so there is no need to switch rackets for that reason.

no he ccan never win the French...at least the odds are very much against him. Go read the thread and vote in the poll. We talked about this topic quite extensilvely:

Thanks Push for saving some of us the pain of going through this analysis again. If you read the previous thread you can see how split many are here about this discussion.

If you like to gamble (or talk about odds) I did post a link that contains Fed's odds to win the French this year. Before the AO he had the best odds of all the pros. Not sure what they are now. It's a little early to make odds for the FO, given many factors that will take place over the next 3 months or so leading up to the tournament itself.

Roger can and will win this year's French. If by chance he doesn't win it, I sincerely hope Coria can get his act together and take it this time without falling apart, but I still believe it's Roger's year to take 3 out of the 4 slams again except he'll have to substitute the French for the Australian.

I'm not sure about his new coach. Is he that old man at Australia Open ?

Regarding Federer - he is the genious of tennis.

Mats Willander:

" I think Roger Federer is most probably a better tennis player than Pete Sampras was... And I think he will go into all four majors every year for the next five, six, seven years, if he's healthy, thinking he can win and I think the other players know he can win. I think that even spills over into the French Open. Sampras was never a threat at the French Open, but he was very dominant in the other three. I think Federer can win all four of them..."

I agree with everything you and Mats say about Fed. But according to a certain person the odds are against Federer and everyone on the planet ever winning the French Open. Therefore all tennis tournamnets should be canceled.

How about Brasil Open? Has he ever been invited?

Yes I feel Roger has the game to win on the clay of Roland Garros. He has shown lots of versitility, and has shown he can match the games best clay courts on their beloved dirt ( Coria at Hamburg is just one ex.).

I'm not talking about Nadal's game.

But I don't know why - but every time when I see him some antypathy appears in my soul. Probably he is ugly if we talk about his face.

luck of the draw..+ hot or not..

i think a lot depends how the draw plays out and how the matches go early on in his section of the draw + whether the wetaher is hot or not...
i guess , as always in the slams , particularly at the french and also aussie open , this will be a factor.
rogers game is the purest but the clay is an equaliser of the puerest sort itself.

hotter weathet will be more to rogers advantage that disadvantage since the pace will be highewr and more of his game will benefit form that then not. ie. some 'easy' points from aces + some serve + volleys ..

coria will be very hard this year if he is dedicated like last year but he h´needs to show all his grit to make it.

all south americans and spaniards are threats as usual and even more so than normal since they have learned more and more to attack the ball.

outside threat: gambill.. just kiddin'..

gotta go// chris
