Countdown to Blade Runner 2049

Yes let's be as negative as possible about it. I don't want to build my expectations up and be disappointed. Another thing I heard is that Harrison Ford doesn't appear until the movie is nearly over. Also, we can't expect much from Jared Leto. This guy is making a career out of failing to fill big shoes. First playing the Joker after Ledger, and now playing the BR villain after Rutger Hauer's Roy Batty.

We've been waiting for 35 years. I don't even care if it's bad.

Apparently there was a test screening in June, where it was criticized for being "overly long, [...] slow and plodding". Sounds good to me.

Zero interest !!!!

Loved Blade Runner with Harrison Ford. If the new Blade Runner gets poor reviews....wont watch it. It would contaminate the original for me. :(

I remember watching the first one and hating it at first. I found it slow, long, confusing. It's the kind of movie that grows on you. If the 2nd movie bombs at the box office, it may be following the steps of its predecessor. Or it may just suck.

Looking forward to this. If the soundtrack is at least half as good as Vangelis' from the original Blade Runner I'll be happy.

I'll definitely go and see it, but not sure what to make of this. On the one hand I love Blade Runner. On the other hand I have seen Prometheus and some episodes of the latest Twin Peaks. Really don't want to get burned again and Blade Runner simply didn't need a sequel. Based on the trailer they appear to be trying to solve a question that nobody asked in the original.

The trailers "look" and sound great, because they have just copied the original. Smart move. Its got Ryan Gosling in it - every film I have seen of his I have liked to some degree. Denis Villeneuve is a good director but Arrival got worse and worse the more it explained things, and it looks like there is going to be a lot of explaining in this new Blade Runner.

I loved it from the moment I first saw it. Never tire of watching it time and time again. Vangelis' music still haunts me.

The best sci-fi film ever made with the possible exception of 2001: A Space Odyssey!

So was the original

Shame on you. And why do you even compare BR to Indiana Jones? Just because Harrison Ford stars in both??

Blade Runner was released 1 year after Raiders of the Lost Ark. Both star Harrison Ford and both are celebrated movies from the 80s. And both are extremely overrated. And so is Star Wars, while we're at it.

I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep before I saw Blade Runner. I remember liking the book a bit more than the movie, but really liking both. But I'll probably wait until it is on HBO or streamed, better creature comforts.

International cut is still my favorite. Yes, with the voiceovers.

It was the international version of the original I watched. Actually the first time I have seen it, and whilst I prefer the other cuts I didn't mind the voiceovers, though I am not keen on the ending. If it was the only version that existed I would still consider Blade Runner a great film.

I should add that I am not convinced by the unicorn sequence as I think it removes ambiguity rather than adds it.

Watched it on Imax!
My score: 7.5/10. In terms of sequels, it's not Terminator 2 (masterpiece), but it's not the Matrix Reloaded (turd) either.

Things I liked:
- The story. I found it more interesting, more evenful and more emotionally engaging than the original's. It was written by Hampton Fancher, the same guy who wrote most of the original's screenplay. Thus, the story is very cohesive with the original.
-The visuals. Absolutely top notch. I would rewatch it just for the visuals.
- Ryan Gosling is good enough to carry the movie.

Things I didn't like:
- Too many nods to the original. Despite what the director said in interviews, most of the film looks like a homage to the original. I would have liked to see how life is different 30 years later, not just in technology, but also in everyday life, for replicants and especially for humans.
- Some of the long, "poetic" moments were just too long for the little "poetry" that they brought. I know they tried to imitate the original, but at times it felt forced, as if the director was saying "ok, this is a Blade Runner film, so let's make sure we have enough of those long scenes where not much happens."
- The villain characters are not fleshed out enough. For a movie that tries to emulate and surpass the original in many aspects, this was disappointing. This is especially unforgivable in the case of Jared Leto's character. He just disappears from the movie near the end! Since this is the villain leader, I was expecting a Roy Batty-like confrontation, so I was absolutely shocked when the end credits started rolling. How can they do that??! Not that I am a fan of this character, but as the leader of the villains, doesn't he at least deserve a proper exit?? Wtf!
- The ending was not climactic enough. Yes it was action packed and loud, but it lacked the impact of the original's. Forgetting to show what happens to the villain leader (see previous point) is also part of what makes the ending feel unsatisfying.

Overall, a good movie but not a classic.
Now they will probably make a movie on the events that happened between 2019 and 2049. A "midquel" so to speak. You heard it here first.

I think the ending was setting up another sequel. I didn't view it as the end of the story. It felt more like the end of one segment of the story.

I liked the film overall, but I can tell that it's not going to have much success at the box office. The average movie-goer doesn't want to watch a 2.5-hr-long film that is slow and deliberate in its story telling.

I thought it was an excellent film, despite a number of issues with the story. I think it works better as a stand alone film than as a sequel to the original.

Not a second too long. I don't think a single scene dragged. Frankly, I think it should have been longer. An extra 30 mins easy.

+1

I'm going to re-watch it this weekend. Can't think of too many better ways of escapism while this film can be enjoyed on a big screen with big sound.
