Just Wiki-ed the field for the two AOs that JC won. With the exception of one retirement of Pete Sampras they are mightily powerful fields... absolutely dwarfing the joke fields we witnessed in 2017, for example.

I'll always consider the AO to be slightly less prestigious than the other three majors -- kinda like the PGA Championship in golf.

In any event, given the disparities in resumes, in order for Courier to have an argument he'd really have to have won on all 3 surfaces for that one extra major to really pull rank.

It's irrational to downgrade the Australian Open relative to the other majors. Its inferiority ended 25 years ago.

Well I just did. Come at me bro.

In all seriousness, the AO is pretty clearly the least prestigious major. It parallels the PGA Championship quite nicely.

Just making an assertion doesn't make it true. There's nothing about the way the players treat the AO these days to suggest it lacks prestige. If you were to point to a major that's fallen into disrepair in the last 5 years it's most likely the USO which top players have elected to bypass in recent years if troubled with injury niggles, preferring to be fully fit for the following season. Assertions around the prestige of the slam tournament tend to reflect the location of the poster rather than the mindset of the leading players, and it's ultimately how the tournaments are regarded by leading players that determine their prestige.

Seriously, no player would ever choose the AO as the one major they'd win in their career.

I almost agree with that. There'd probably be a few aspiring Australian
players who would, but other than that no one would. Other than American players no one would choose the USO either, so there's no great distinction there.
