Describe your club

Ive recently just joined a club, and am wondering that others are like out there, and how they might differ from country to country in terms of facilities/court types/leagues etc.

My club has 14 grass courts, 4 hard courts and two synthetic.

They have winter pennants, Saturday arvo mens open pennants (which I will be playing in the club's third team), Sat arvo and Wed night social tennis, Sunday veterens, intra-club and inter-club tournaments.

Plus Thursday night pennant training.

seems to be a good mix of social activities. Dont know how involved I will get with this though.

Memberhship is $340 a year.

While there are a lot of older players down there, theres a good mix of youngsters - which is why I chose this club opposed to many others around the place that are pretty much nursing homes...

Something I find weird is that the grass courts play much slower than the artifical courts. Especially if it has been raining. I hate playing on the fake stuff. Cant get any timing on my ground strokes, especially the backhand. On grass its beautiful. The ball just pops up and says 'smack me', and everything seems so much easier and lighter.

My club has 12 indoor hard courts and 3 squash courts. We have singles, doubles and morning leagues. We have one club championship that starts in June and ends in August. Membership is 230 per year plus court time, although we do have an unlimited option for 170 per month.

Woah, that's expensive...do they have an intraclub league of any form? Where abouts are you?

8 clay courts, 4 artificial grass courts. Men's night, ladies morning, mixed night, national competitions and open tournaments.
We have around 900 members and membership is 147 euro's a year, small fees for the official tournaments/competitions are extra.

Yea we have USTA teams, a lot of them. I think in the fall season we had 73 teams.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a pennant, in this sense, and what is an arvo?

I'm considering joining a club, mainly to hit and compete with a greater number/variety of players. The number of free courts near me is great, but my circle of tennis buddies is very small. There are three clubs that I'm comparing. For most part, amenities and activities are comparable.

- They each have at least 12 courts (one has 16). Unfortunately, all hardcourt :evil:.

- Each have a decently stocked pro-shop, though definitely slanted toward Head racquets and accessories (USPTA is sponsored by Head, IIRC).

- Each have leagues, ladders and regular tournaments for the different skill levels.

- Unlimited court time, two clubs include free ball machine use. Each club is also open to the public, so each have "members only" hours, too.

- Drop-in group clinics free to members.

- Fitness center & locker rooms/showers at each club. Clubhouses with wi-fi access.

- And of course, discounted rate for lessons.

Annual fees range from $840 - $1100 for a single person membership.

Pennants in Australia is basically the main intra-club tennis league ran in each city. There are clubs all around my city that play each other twice over the season, and each club has teams of 4 that are put in divisions. Not sure what the equivalent is in the US or Europe...if someone could please explain.

I think the champion clubs might travel to play in a national tournament somewhere against clubs from other cities. Don't quote me though - I joined up a week ago, and its still winter.

Generally, it's intra-club. I've seen junior teams from different clubs play each other, semi-regularly, but haven't seen the same for adults.

USTA = United States Tennis Association

It runs leagues determined by region/locality. Teams are generally not club dependent.
