Difference between Nadal and Krygios time between points

I found it it hilarious that umpires frequently warn (or should warn) Nadal about going over the 25 second time limit between points, whereas commentators were saying when Krygios played Gasquet last week that the umpire could legitimately penalize Krygios for taking less than 15 seconds between points and therefore not allowing the reciever enough time to actually make it to the baseline to return.

He was playing at a crazy pace - and I reckon you could fit in two Krygios matches into one Nadal match (as long as they're not playing each other) and still have the same amount of total shots played.

KG does play exceptionally fast, his match vs. Fed was a joy to watch. That would've been 4 hours between Nadal/Novak.

That said, I timed two consecutive Nadal games vs. Bolelli and he didn't even hit 20 seconds. Obviously it was an anomaly as Nadal does frequently take 25 seconds or more, I just found it surprising as I'd never personally timed a game before.

the server dictates the pace. can you please show the rule that says there must be a 15 sec minimum?

In the past, before toweling between points became epidemic, "fast serving" was a thing that some players did as most players receiving didn't like to say that they were not ready for it and cause a fuss. I remember reading that Lew Hoad got chastised for doing it in some Davis Cup tie.

The server can only serve when BOTH players are ready, as the server has to start the point it goes without saying that they're ready but that doesn't give them the right to rush an unready player. If they do, the receiver is well within the rules to call a Let and make no attempt to return the ball if it is served.

Regardless, if the receiver made no objections to the amount of time they got to position themselves to receive then it is a none-issue.

Really? Didn't know that there was such a rule. I saw him averaging 13 seconds in one of his matches a little while ago. Very fast. Can't remember seeing another playing take that little time between points.

There isn't. The OP either misheard or the commentators were wrong. The game goes at the server's pace. If he can serve without picking between balls, bouncing or everything else that eats of a few seconds then tough luck for the opponent. Granollers got a point penalty right near the end of the match the other day for holding Monfils up on serve - and he's really quick.

Interestingly, they never seem too serious about it during majors. I watched a match once a few years back where Nadal made the server wait about 20 times in one match. By the rules it should have cost him 19 points.

He must be doing it on purpose. I do that all the time when I'm playing tennis. I just like rushing my opponent
A lot of times I don't even bounce the ball before serving. Sometimes my opponent would ask me to bounce it at least once or twice just so they are prepared to return.

I remember Lars Graff telling Agassi that he could not fast serve his opponent. It was in a match between Nadal and Agassi in Montreal. He also said the following about a match between Roddick and Federer.

" But I remember at one point Roddick told me about Federer, ‘He’s [playing] too fast.’ Federer was serving at the time and Roddick is saying that Federer is too fast between points. I said, ‘Andy, if you are not ready, please put up your hand.’ Somebody said that also showed good experience on my part as an umpire in communicating. Andy accepted what I said very well. I think there was a good feeling between the players that day and I think as an umpire I was not noticed very much during the match, which I think is a good sign because the players are the center of attention.”
