Does Federer Have Any, You Know, *Friends*?

It's a weird thing to notice, but I can't help but notice that Roger doesn't seem to have many people in his life who are just friends.

At Wimbledon, his box included Mirka, his parents, and Gwen Stefani and her husband. Had Tiger Woods not been recovering from knee surgery, maybe Tiger would have been there.

What about an actual buddy or two or three? It seems strange that Roger's most consistent "friend" is a rather unbelievable friendship manufactured by Nike.

I'm sure he has many, but I think he prefers to keep his private life very private.

FYI, there is another Friends box at Wimbledon, one that doesn't get shown on TV, on the other side of the court from the one that does.

Do any other players bring their friends to their matches all the time? Nadal's girlfriend doesn't even watch him, while Mirka is at every match of Federer's.

I dunno. But it was hardly your garden-variety tour match, which would get old for even your best buddy. It was Wimbledon finals.

I don't think you have a clue on what you're talking about. Federer has a LOT of private friends you'll be very surprised. I'm not even a Federer fan, but believe me when I say he is a very nice guy and down to earth, and his friends like him very much.

Eh, I'm sure they all have friends, even if we don't see them in the family box. At the same time, they might not have a ton of close friends. It's different for professional tennis players because they travel all the time and likely have been devoted to their sports since they were very young.

He is very tight with Gwen and Gavin and has been for a long time and that is not a "manufactured Nike" friendship. I'm sure Fed has plenty of other friends as well- why wouldn't he?

Mirka actually has reason to be at every Federer match. She's his manager after all.

Did Nadal ever break up with his "secret" g/f?

Lonely Roger

Probably he doesn't have many friends because he travels from city to city playing tennis. Poor lonely Roger. He spends his spare time sitting in bars, buying drinks for strangers just so they'll talk to him. After matches, he calls those 'singles talk' lines just to take his mind off his own lonliness.

ummm.... you're basing this on what? do you know roger? do you expect all his friends to show up at the match and fit into a box for ten people? in that box, why do his girlfriend, gavin rossdale and gwen stefani not count as friends? do you know anyone from his private life? do you base your decision about how many friends he has on on what you see on tv? do you honestly believe that roger's best friend is tiger woods?

and the biggy- why are you going out of your way to make a malicious, groundless, classless statement about someone who has done so much for the sport whose forum you're on?

jeeeez.

Tiger must have a lot of friends - he keeps on calling everyone "buddy".

HAHAHAH. But you know, I don't think Roger's lonely. He has a lot of little documentary videos when he's at Swizterland <-- Sorry, don't know how to spell it, and Dubai. He may not have as many as some people, but still, he has many friends.

Roger doesn't need two rows of friends. He's his own man. He's not some college kid who has to bring his frat brothers with him. And Tiger would have been there so he says.

Anyhow Mirka looks to me like the more affable one between them.

This is true. I was in Murrays a few years back with his Dad and his partner. Murrays Mom, agent, gf etc.. were all in the main box that got showed all the time.

Hehe - I used to travel a lot for work and I'd see guys like that. Of course they were sales guys, not Roger Federer!

Federer's friends probably have lives and they can't just all attend his big matches. Do your friends come see you work? They're all probably watching him on TV whereever they are. Federer probably sees them when the camera's are not rolling.

not to be an arse, but i feel the question is actually pretty dumb
youre talkin about regular, blue collar friends of federer, people who probably have jobs, and families to take care of, they can't just fly around at their wish.. it costs money and takes up time.
not that many "regular" people can just up and decide to watch the wimbledon final, it's not that cheap to do that.

It would be fun if my friends came to cheer me on at work - they could come applaud me if I did particularly well at a meeting. I had to fire someone the other day (not fun) and afterwards John McEnroe could have interviewed me and given me a hug

Aren't you glad that you didn't have to contend with a McEnroe hug after all that?

Bud Collins would have been worse. Plus, my work environment is not business casual so his pants would have stood out. Maybe I should get my parents, spouse etc to come cheer me on the next time I have a big meeting and provide illegal coaching. Like my dad could tell me when to take a sip of my coffee or eat a banana for nourishment. They could applaud politely if someone makes a point against me and stand up to applaud and cheer if I fight back appropriately.

hey dudes, Cindy;s just asking a question, based on an observation .. no need to get offended.
I would go with ATX (#18 .) - his friends prolly are busy people too, most likely will be watching on telly.
And like serve_ace, yes, I too am a friend :-D

Cindy, can't wait to see you in the finals - I always root for unseeded finalists )

If you have caught on Roger's interviews he splits his time between Dubai and Switzerland and said that if he goes to Switzerland, he spends his time with friends and family. Your question is valid to some point and a bit stupid. Who sits on the other players box? Just about the closest people to the players, family and crew. The people that sits on Federer's box is not much different from who you see in the other player's box and more. But I am pretty sure if you are really looking for some people to vouch as Roger's friends you will not look far enough and you will find some people in the ATP tour to start with.

Goodness, how old are you? This isn't a popularity contest, and sooner or later, you'll realize that life isn't one either. You could make this argument for a lot of players on tour, yet you chose Federer for some reason. He's a nice guy, I'm sure he has a lot of friends, why would you try to guess how many friends a person has based on what you see on TV?

You sure post ALOT of hypothetical questions about Federer. I believe this is your 3rd thread on Federer since just Sunday. Why not just make ONE thread and name it "The wonderings of RF's life".

And asking questions about his personal preference in a public forum is just straight dumb and silly. What type of response were you expecting? I highly doubt anyone on this forum knows Federer on a personal level so I guess you enjoy bull-shiitty answers?

Roger and Mirka are extremely good friends with Gwen Stefani and her husband FYI.

Roger have probably around $100-150 million on his account, so yeah he has a lot of friends, and it's a shame for him not to have some prettier girlfriend in his box, but that's his problem :D

As others have said, I'm sure he has friends. They just don't all come to Wimbledon or his other tournaments.

I can sometimes be a little self-centred (and I don't think a bit of self-centredness is a bad thing, there's a difference between that and downright selfishness. I'm considerate of other people, but sometimes I'm very self-focused.) I think a lot of humans are self-centred to some extent and that most of us need to be - we can only see the world from our own eyes and we need to be focused on ourselves to survive.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that because, from my perspective, things relate to me, that's not the same from other people. My friends have their lives as well and even if they're not always there, it doesn't me they don't like me. Just that their lives don't revolve around mine, however close they are. Their lives revolve around them.

What I mean is, Roger probably has quite a lot of close friends, but they will have their own lives to lead, and they probably can't show up to see him at every tournament, or even just Wimbledon. Just because we don't see many of his friends doesn't mean that he doesn't have many.

Cindysphinx you should be banned for posting this thread..we all no he is a popular guy who is modest and much to classy then to have a cheer squad go with him everywhere.

who on this forum wouldnt want to be his friend anyway..he could have like millions of friends if he wants..hmm someday *ponders optimistically*

No one has many *friends*. In fact, most people have 2 or 3 friends, the other people are well-known relatives.
But I guess Roger has friends, he looks like a kind guy.

Rogers friends are the ones in his box that are about his age and you don't know who they are eg the guy sitting beside Mirka at the Wim. final. Who is he? One of Federer's friends.

It really freaks me out that people may care if Federer has or doesn't have friends. But anyway, in the Wimbledon box he had something like 6 places. His parents, Mirka and the two singers make 5. Also, they said in the TV that both him and Nadal had asked for 20 seats more, which don't appear in TV. There is where you'd find his friends

just because fed didn't bring his extended family and all his extended familys family doesn't mean he doesn't have friends, hes probably a person who keeps his closest friends close and doesn't need his own family army to cheer for him

Sometimes maybe the players don't want lots of friends at the matches cause it causes distractions......they need to focus. I think Fed has many friends.....he's the #1 player...everyone wants to rub elbows with the #1 player.

Everybody has friends when you're winning.

Fed surely has childhood friends, but he does seem a bit of a social climber/status seeker to me. I mean Gwen & Gavin Stefani? Where did he even meet them? What do the talk about? Is Mirka a hollerback girl?
