Dominic Thiem-the future superstar...

I don't see much talk from you guys about Thiem.

I think he is the most promising young players. Saw him practicing with Federer on P2 court Monday--his baseline ball strike is more consistent than Roger's. Has won 3 European clay titles in a row this year, he is surely become very confident. More important, he is more mature and plays smarter than other young guns out there.

D. Them is the real deal, guys.

So many exceptional teens in the juniors currently, I wouldn't expect this guy to be a "superstar" with those players moving up in the next few years.

I second that Thiem really does remind me of younger Wawrinka. Maybe he will be a late bloomer as well... He has the power of the ground. Needs to make his serve a better weapon ala Stan.

But I also agree, there are some younger guys in the 18yr old contingent who are more talented than him

There is a thread called Dominic Thiem the next top ten I tell ya where people have been following his progress for a few years. I hope he has a really good career and I can see him being a large threat on clay and slow hard courts in the near future

I've been on the bandwagon even before he served in the Military (which gained my off-court appeal).

I believe you're right, but opposing Tipsa, I think his head is on straight.

I hope you're right. Tennis needs some new blood to compete with Djoker.

Speaking of Thiem, I don't recall seeing his name in the draw. Is he playing in New York this week?

Plays later today. Good on slow courts, but you never know. Has all the shots largely, but not top class foot speed.

I was courtside when he beat Gimeno-Traver. I have seen him on TV and love his backhand. Up close my main impression is that he hits the ball well on both sides but doesn't get up the court at all -- in fairness he can hit winners from so far behind the baseline that may not matter so much -- and that he needs more action on his first and second serve. It seemed a little too easy for G-T to use Thiem's pace and send testing returns back. In truth both men were very tired by the time the key points came round and it may be unfair to judge them by the way they played out that match. it was pretty much hit out or die of heatstroke.

Dominic just beat Marin Cilic at the Brisbane 2016 on Jan. 7, 2016. So he now has wins over Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic. He got a set off Andy Murray last year, I think. Looks like he usually starts slow in the first set, before playing his best. I am following him big time - he not only has potential as an up-and-coming young gun but he's got momentum in rankings. He will be playing Roger Federer this Sat. Jan. 9, 2016 at the Brisbane tournament; Federer knows Dominic well as they've practiced together before.

We will probably see him at the Australian Open too. Go Dominic, & thanks for posting your thoughts on FB.

I see Thiem as a Muster, a potential danger on Clay courts.

Unfortunately - just like as with Hyuen-Chung, Kyrgios, Sock, Nishikori, Dimitrov, or any of these other over-hyped 'youngsters' - (they're not even young anymore - including Thiem), I don't see anything coming of him.

Might make the odd 4th round of a Slam when he matures but that's his ceiling. That's all of their ceiling.

The next Slam winner (who is not an existing Slam winner) is probably someone that none of us have heard about. He might not even be born yet.

Well, the top 10 have been there for awhile. In another 4 years, these youngsters will be there. Djokovic will remain the ceiling for at least the next 3-4 years. Wawrinka maybe another 2 years. Of course you have Berdych, Nishikori, Raonic, Nadal (another 2-3 years).

Fed won his first GS at 22-23 so DT is just about on path - this is obviously a big year for the young Austrian -
