Berdych sees end of 'Big 4' era
Asked if the 'big four era was over', the Czech Republic star responded: "...I think it's very possible.... it's the nature of the process of the time and of the sport." Adding other players emerging through the year to "be definitely competitive to get a chance to win a Slam". And Berdych, 32, once a world number four, says he still harbours hope of winning a Grand Slam; "I think that's the beauty of our sport that no matter where you are, you still have a big chance. It's about that particular day, and from that one day you can create a great week... From one great week, you can make it two and that's what you are looking for....To be honest, that's the only reason why I'm still around."
A semi-finalist in the past two years in Doha and seeded three this time round, Berdych starts off against Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.

A great tour veteran has spoken.

Then he celebrates the new year by losing to Struff. Whether or not it is the end of the Big 4 era, Berdych should just focus on his matches.

It depends on how you define the era. If we're talking about all 4 of them simultaneously reaching the latter stages of slams, it's already ended 5 years ago when Rosol took out Rafa at Wimbledon.

You're actually right in a way. Since 2012, the big four have not all had a good season at the same time. In 2013, Fed fell off; 2014, Murray fell off; 2015, Nadal fell off; 2016, Fedal fell off; 2017, Murray/Nole fell off; and unfortunately, it doesn't look like 2018 will be a reunion at the top four for the quartet.

Well in this one small thing he may be right, but of course Bendy is part of that era which he fails to realize.

Fed is going to be darn interesting this year because it looks like he'll be stuck early this year holding the Big 4 fort against a swarm of much younger players (much younger than 2017); will Grandpaerer cement himself as the longevity GOAT over Rosewall in 2018?

Looks like the last two standing but they are still odds on to take the Big Two era in to 2019 unless some Rob Cross equivalent comes from nowhere to do a number on them like he did on Taylor.

2011-2016 top 10 player, briefly at No4 not a shabby record. Trumps Tsonga I think but not Ferrer (no 3 and top 10 2010-2014 and again 2015-2016) Ferrer also 27 titles v 13 for Tomas.

in the 80s we called those "gayboy socks". even boys wearing them in winter was considered unacceptable.
The interviewer went after Struff about his socks so not so sure Struff will wear them again. No matter; damage done and Berdbrain humiliated once again.

Bendy bent over by player in pinkish socks. (By the way, true to form Berdy cracked a bit on serve on the final point. Big 2nd serve and a deep return and the great choker blasted it wide; and the masses rejoiced.:p)

Don't tell me it was another double bagel?? ;)
Bendy actually played extremely well as Struff continued his strong late 2017 form including impressive domination at net with 18 of 21 points won (Bendy 4 of 16

). This is not quite the tale between the legs stuff like the stare downs of Murray at Auz 2015 at end of set resulting in immediate bagel being served up by the Muzziah, but its got to hurt more as Bendy clearly having delusions of grandeur Malvolio style

Roger: "Of course I'm John AND Paul!"

Novak: "Wow, I really like this haircut!"

Andy: " I'm the only one who got knighted!"

Rafa: "Please...who is Beatles?"

Actually I've always thought Fed probably had a fairly similar personality to Paul McCartney. And Murray's dry sense of humour is a good match for Harrison.

Zverev, Dimitrov, Thiem will lead the charge of the younger generation in 2018, while others like Kyrgios, Shapo, Tsitsipas and maybe also Chung will keep climbing up the rankings. The change of guard is on the verge and 2018-2019 will see some big changes on tour. There are others like Goffin, Sock, Tiafoe, etc., and the future of tennis seems to have arrived finally. The big 4 will feel the pressure from these youngsters. Also, the futre of 1HBH seems bright with the rise of Dimi, Thiem, Shapo and Tsitsipas. These guys should carry the flag for OHBH at least for the next decade.

Don't forget that the lag between kids catching the Federer bug and maturing as tennis prodigies is probably 10+ years. This means that this conveyor belt still has OHBH players coming our way.

Big 4 Era is ending more because of injuries than because of time.
