Eugenie Bouchard and Milos Raonic gender matters.

I am proud of both Eugenie and Milos they have made Canadians very proud! I have been on a Canadian website TSN disappointed in Some Canadians slamming Milos. Milos had a great FO he is improving he just needs to cut down on the errors. Milos once he can find the balance between aggression and errors he will be top five. Men tennis at the top is MORE competitive than women tennis. I am proud of Eugenie Bouchard but there is a void at the top of the WTA it looks like a change of guard is going to happen soon. Serena, Li Na are getting old Azarenka is injured at the moment there is only Sharapova. Meanwhile, on the ATP tour Milos is already top 10 he just Had a breakthrough on clay at the FO not his favourite surface YET reached the QF for the first time. Milos showed a lot of heart and fight to finally reach a slam QF. Does Milos need to improve of course he does. Milos just needs to keep on working hard and he will start to bveat the top men.

Outside of more knowledgeable tennis communities like this one, I don't expect much from Canadian sports fans. Most of them don't have the first clue about tennis.

Agreed. Most casual sports fans will equate a QF in a major to finishing 8th at an Olympic (non-tennis) event, or something similar, without any understanding of the number of full-time professional tennis players out there on the various levels of circuits fighting for scraps to make it to the upper echelons of the sport, compared to the relatively low number of full-timers in most Olympic disciplines. The size of the talent pool just isn't the same.

If you gave any of these sports fans a list of the top 10 pro players in basketball, baseball, football, hockey (relevance for the Canadian critics) and asked them whether they thought these players were meaningful participants in their chosen sport, they'd invariably respond positively.

Most networks and sportscasters in Canada don't have a clue about tennis....I watched a woman sportscaster on TSN the other day say Milos Raonic had won his game.....she meant 'match' but didn't phrase it right. At least she pronounced his name correctly. I do have to give TSN credit in carrying much more tennis lately, including both Raonic and Bouchard matches simultaneously this morning.

Yep. It would be like someone here saying Patrick Kane or Anze Kopitar sucks basically because they're not at Crosby, Malkin, Ovechkin or Stamkos' level.

Tennis?

Huh? Isn't that that game you play with a ball instead of a puck?

Most of them don't even have the first clue about hockey! [see: Undying support for the Toronto Maple Leafs]

Very true.

Do either of you, or any of our other Canadians on these boards, also think there is some issue with Raonic not being born on CA soil?

He's getting better all the time. Does he get impatient and go for hero shots too early? Sure - but so do 99% of the younger guys on tour. I hope he sticks with the current coaching team. They've got him working on the right things.

Only the odd fringe agitator who is just looking to start something. His family moved to Canada when he was still so young (3 years old?) and all his tennis training was in Canada until later years so it's a non-issue for just about everyone. Where this does get a bit trickier is when combined with his time spent in Monaco, but again I think this is just a lack of knowledge among fans of other North American professional sports that take place 99% in one country and so the athletes reside there full time, versus globe trotting tennis players who often set up a 2nd home base abroad.

The comments section on TSN is filled with morons/trolls regardless of the sport. Just read comments after hockey games...
