You mean the first two sets of the semi and the first set of the final. The rest was more about clutchness.

Pretty much what he did in those sets, caused enough damage to see him through. Federer and Murray, along with Nadal earlier that month in Doha did not know what hit them before it was too late.

I agree here. I don't think 2017 Fed beats Djokovic in the 2015 USO final. He still would have choked away endless BO opportunities, though the match probably would have gone five, in which Nole wins the fifth going away. He has all those mental scars from the blown MP's in the 2010/11 USO semis as well.

But 2017 Fed defeats Novak on grass. It's still cringe worthy as a Fed fan that he lost to him on grass. Novak has outperformed on grass more than any other guy in the history of tennis. Of course he benefited massively that today's grass is a joke compared to the way Wimbledon played pre-2003. Lendl was a better grass court player and of course, never broke through there.

Interesting that you didn't differentiate between the 2014 and 15 versions of Nole at Wimby, how do you think '17 Fed would match up with both iterations of Nole?

IMO, both of the 2014 and 2015 Wimby finals would go to 5.

Edge for 2017 wim fed vs 2014 wim djok
edge for 2015 wim djok vs 2017 wim fed

2015 uso djok of course beats 2017 uso fed
but vs fed in 2017 AO form, it'd be close.

Should be close. At that time it was prime Djokovic but Federer has raised his game since. Better backhand and he seems totally comfortable with the larger head size. What about the mental aspect of it? Will Federer carry with him the confidence from his recent success or would it be as it was in 2014/15 with the long slam drought?

2014-2015 Fed vs 2017-2018 Fed

2014-2015:
133-22 overall
32-11 vs top 10
6-7 vs Djokovic
26-4 vs top 10 not named Djokovic

2017-2018
59-5 overall
15-2 vs top 10

Even if we back out Djokovic, Federer’s winning pct has still improved modestly. And 2017-2018 saw the return of a beast-mode Nadal.

Based on the numbers, Fed has improved solidly from his 2014-2015 time frame. I think that all of it is due to his backhand. I have seen Fed win rallies when players have continually gone to his backhand. Better yet, I have seen Fed even neutralize Nadal’s forehand with his backhand, which is something that has never happened.

This version of Fed is far more balanced than the 2014-2015 version. I would put this version of Fed on par with his 2007 season. But of course, he isn’t nearly as durable as that version. But his peak is right there, with the exception of his 2007 AO, the last of beast-mode Fed.

Good point.

Fed, 2014-2015, excluding clay:
112-14, .889, overall
29-8, .784 vs top 10

2017-2018
59-5, .922 overall
15-2, .822 vs top 10

However, Fed didn’t play Djokovic in 2017-2018
Excluding Djokovic and clay, Fed from 2014-15
96-8, .923 overall
23-2, .920 vs top 10

Fed looks nearly the same without a healthy Djoker.

However:
2014-2015 Fed was 1-1 vs Nadal.
2017-2018 Fed was 4-0 vs Nadal

And the Nadal from 2017-2018 was far better than the 2014-2015 Nadal.

I still give 2017-2018 Fed an edge over 2014-2015 Fed. I think that 2014-2015 Fed maybe splits with 2017-2018 Nadal if he is lucky.

2015 Nadal was completely out of form. Fognini was 3-2 vs Nadal, including a come-from-behind 5 set win over Rafa at the USO.

Fed’s revamped backhand made the difference against Nadal. It would be awesome to see an in-form Djokovic face an in-form Djokovic at the USO.

W 14- Federer in 3 or 4 sets
W 15- Djokovic in 5 sets
UO 15- Federer in 3 or 4 sets

The 2017 and so far 2018 Federer is moving so much better and has much more confidence then the 2014-2016 Federer did! Also, his backhand is light years better then a couple of years ago due to Ivan Ljubicic making Federer hit it flat and take it early at all costs! The forehand has also been revitalized since his comeback from surgery. All in all this new and improved Roger is just a better player then a couple of years ago, even if it's only just.

I think the best match would be the 2017 Federer at Wimbledon against the 2015 Djokovic at Wimbledon. That would be epic! I'd say Fed in 5.

He wins Wimby 2014 but still would lose both in 2015. Aint nothing to put his head down about, Djokovic was so gdamn dominant.

I’m a Fed fan but I just don’t see how he was so much better in 2017 than in 2014-15? Is this supported by actual statistics?

Federer was playing at an awesome level in 2015 at Wimbledon (until final) and STILL lost to Novak. The mental block cannot be underestimated.

Some people seriously underestimate the beast that Djoker used to be...

These days it's hard to remember how beast Djoker used to be.

:(

I rewatched Nole's match against Rafa in Doha, Nadal wasn't even playing bad, but Djokovic ate him up and spit him out so quickly. 2015-first half 2016 Djokovic was a different beast altogether and people do tend to forget that now that Nole's out of the spotlight and Fed's back in it.

Sad really...

Anyway, Fed wins Wimby 2014, but def doesn't take the other three. It isn't happening, no matter how much Fed fans try to twist it ;)

He might win Wimby 2014 (50/50), though I can’t see him beating Djokovic in 2015 at W/USO.
