Field best or worst players against top team?

I have the crappy job of captaining a team with a wide range of abilities - from 4.5 down to 3.0! If I pick our best team every week we would probably finish first but the weakest player would never get a match. Yet if I give everyone equal time we wouldn't make the final and everyone will be pissed. Neither sit right with me, so I'm going to give everyone in my team at least a few games this season, but best players will play nearly every week if available.

Because we don't need to beat the top team - we just need to finish second to make the final - should I play our best team against the top team or play our worst?

We could field our best players against top team and still end up with no points that round if everyone loses narrowly. Also doing our weakest player no favors if he gets double bagelled. Maybe best to unleash top team against middle of the table teams to guarantee points?

I would field my top lineup vs the top team, and sprinkle in the weaker players against weaker teams where they have a chance.

I would also play my best players against the top team and vice versa. If you can't beat the other team with your best players then you aren't going to win in the playoffs anyway.

Obvious question-- how did you end up with such a varied team ?

I would play your best players with a little variation in this match. Maybe put your #1 guy at 2 or 3. Then when the playoff matches come you still have a few tricks up your sleeve.

Not many competitive players at my club so we only have a single men's team and a mixed team. Average age is about 60!
