Grand Slam men's singles champions who least deserved it.

Well we had a thread of players who would have deserved at least to be one time a GS champion.

How about seeing it from another angle. Who would be the GS champion that less deserved it?

I guess we have to look into the players that have won a GS just once, and there is a bunch of them.

Below a list in cronological time since open era.

Cilic. Very very very very......................................................(a million times) very overrated performance. Both Federer and Nishikori were gassed in their matches, and I really have no idea why people praise Cilic for beating them. His results after that USO clearly prove it was just a fluke. He can win matches only until he has a to face a top player who is a bit in form.

Cilic was playing out of his mind in those matches. Fully deserved. He is probably on top of this list if we talk about deserved. He blew both of them off the court and finished it in straights. Two very dominant performances against great opponents.

We both know very well that Djokovic would blow him in the final, most probably in straight sets. Cilic was very lucky to face a tired Nishikori who had the hard draw.

Roddick by far. Got to play his quarterfinal when juan carlos was still in his 2nd round. Got practice courts and the most favorable scheduling in tennis history.

I think juan carlos had to play 5 days in a row, while roddick was on schedule.

How are you gonna hate on Cilic's win, which was sublime aggressive ball striking may I add, when he beat 3 top 10 players and 4 top 20 players to win the title and Nadal didn't beat a top 25 player last month to win his?

If I had to choose least deserved, I would go with Korda because he tested positive for an anabolic steroid the same year he won his only Slam, and I'm pretty sure he was juicing when he won it.

Yea well who cares. Djokovic didn't do his job and lost. Cilic got the job done and while at it he dominated the whole thing from the QFs with no sets lost.

You are probably trolling though so I'm probably the stupid one here for taking the bait.

Cilic...
While he deserved it based on being unstoppable for those few matches after overcoming Simon, its still a prototype fluke run.

Again, Cilic's results after this tournament just PROVE it was a fluke. Watch his record against top players. He is just a ball basher who makes too many unforced errors. His real level was shown in USO 2015 semifinal and Wimbledon 2017 final.

Completely absurd thread. You make no sense at all.

Any player who wins a major deserves it. It's that simple. There are 128 players in a major draw and only 1 can be the winner and that 1 player who lifts the trophy in the end must have done something better than the other 127. Is it that hard to grasp such a concept ???

Nadal won 16 slams, not 1. Or you never learned to count? ;)

I like how some people here like to point on opponents rankings. So by your logic Carreno Busta right now is a more dangerous opponent than Del Potro?

Yes I can count which is why I counted 4 top 20 players to 0 top 25 players. LOL. I'm just saying. How are you gonna hate on this guy's win when your fave just breezed to a title without having to play any top players? Is Nadal's title not deserved like Cilic's? Just curious.

He did go on to win a Masters 1000 (2016 Cincinnati beating Murray in the final) and make another Slam final (2017 Wimbledon losing to grassgoat Federer). This is more than many on that list managed to achieve.

Cilic overcame his nightmare match up Simon in just one match so far, USO 14 R16, then from QFs was firing on all cylinders, outplayed Berdych, Federer (also his only win over Fed) and Nishikori . That's 4 out of 7 matches. Shows how well deserved his Slam really was.

I maybe be based (was big fan of El Mago back in the days and still can't believe the fashion he lost that RG) but Gaston Gaudio for me.

thread suffers the tragic flaw of many threads in this forum, in that when a player wins a tournament he wasn't expected to win because he isn't one of the dominant players of his era, that win is somehow not deserved. This is some of the lamest reasoning I've ever heard. Many on this list are there because they merely outplayed everyone else entered. How is that an undeserved win??

For me it's definitely Johansson... When he won the title, nothing happened... Maybe he still didn't realize it...

Well, this happened:

So he fluked his way to a slam and then lucked out with his masters final opponent too?!

It's true that the opponent was a bit jaded coming off winning Wimbledon and the Olympics but...a Big 4 opponent is still a Big 4 opponent.

T Johansson AO’02. If I’m not mistaken his second best showing at a slam is a QF. Fluked it Big time!

For perspective, Philippousis is a far better player, yet went slam-less and is regarded as a ‘weak’ slam finalist by many so called tennis ‘experts’ (sic) at TTW.

Agree. I hate Cilic but even I would admit that in the Fed game he played like an absolute maniac. He shocked everyone, and held his head brilliantly for the subsequent final. Fully deserved the win imo.

Still, Cilic has made the semis of a Slam on four occasions. There are players on the list with resumes significantly worse than that. One can be a "fluke" Slam champion without being the Slam champion with the worst resume. Compared to Gaston Gaudio, for example, Cilic both played very well in the tournament that he won and did better in the rest of his career.

I'd go either Gomez, Teacher or Edmondson.

There are a few players on this list that don't deserve to be there and little disrespectful. Some have been No 1 or 2 in world. Goran, Chang, Stich, Geruaitis, Korda etc. Muster should have more than 1 FO. Cash lost Lendl serving it out at USO SF, would likely won that one and close AO 88.
