Grommet replacement - personal stringers.

For all the stringers that string for themselves or for friends i was just wondering what do you do when you face stringing rackets with grommets that need to be replaced? Some rackets i see have a one peice grommet system, so does that mean if 1 grommet breaks off you have to replace the entire thing? Also, is tubing for only the center main strings? or can you use that to replace grommets? thanks for helping a newb out.

For the occaisional bad grommet, tubing works well. However, if you're going to do a lot of stringing, it's worth your money to buy a couple different sized grommet grinders and an assortment of single grommets. It makes a very good repair.

If there are several bad grommets, then it's time to replace the whole thing. Some of the older Prince racquets have a notorious reputation for having grommets that become quite brittle and break. The problem is, Prince doesn't make the strips anymore. When I get one like that, I tell the person it's time for a new racquet.

thanks for the reply david, most of my friends do not have older rackets, fairly new rackets like the babolat pure drive or the prince warrior TT, so would tubing be good enough? And how does a grommet grinder work? why would you want to grind out the grommet?

tubing is good enough, but it's a chore as you have to put the tubing in place with each stringing job.
grommet grinder removes the old/damaged grommet cleanly from the strip allowing you to put in a similarly sized grommet in its place on the strip. It beats the hell out of replacing the strip, but for personal use, it's a bit of an expense compared to ordering a new bumper-guard/grommet set (which should last you quite a while when you replace the set)

RonnieCorny, i guess it would be an expense compared to ordering a new set, but for me it would be inconvient. Since i live in canada and it would probably take a 2 weeks to get here.
