How Manly do you Feel Hitting 1HBH?

Do you hit a 1Hand Backhand because it is instinct? Do you hit a 1Hand Backhand because you want to be like Stanimal and Fed?

Do you practice trying to hit winners like Stanimal does? If you do hit a winner, how manly do you feel?

Do you hate hitting low balls? Do you hate hitting high balls? Do you prefer Cross court or Down the Line?

Need advice and support to switch :Djust curious

If someone wants to hit as big as Sock's fh on backhand side, which bh has a better chance, 1hbh or 2hbh?

I don't know about manly but it a top-spin one-handed backhand (particularly down the line) feels so good. I'd like to hit like Justin Henin. Low balls are not so great to hit with top spin and wide balls seem easier with a two-hander. Open stance shots are not to be advised but in an emergency it feels good to mange get one back with a bit of power.

Because it feels more natural to me and I have no issues with any type of ball except when its misjudged.

I have heard it said that one is naturally a one-hander or two-hander.

I'm not sure which one is more natural to me. I have always used one-hander because that was the only one the instructors taught when I took beginning classes . Don't know if it felt more natural because I have nothing to compare it to.

The two-hander feels very strange now but that's probably because I hit with one-hander so long. I wish the instructors had taught me the two-hander because the consensus now is that the two-hander is the superior preferred stroke.

The one-hander is practically extinct. I see maybe 1 out of 20 high school players using it.

Plot twist: One-handed backhand is actually the effeminate shot, which is why 1hbh users need to validate their masculinity so desperately.

Very manly. Like high balls and dtl. And looks when the hit to the bh strategy fails

And i am old fat slow and have bum knees but can hit bhs like a young athlete, like in the 1st point

And eventually everyone stops playing with the 2 hander..

I like the dance you did after the shot. Can't do that unless you hit a 1HBH winner.
Lol. No clue where that dance came from but guessing from the supreme joy of crusing a 1hbh winner on a ball i had no right to crush

Fwiw i think the 2h is much better for defensive minded players. For attackers the 1hander is much better

Someone said that dance was like the scorpion guy from mortal combat

You could sort of call it instinct because I tried the DBH for the first year or so of tennis and switched to the OBH after never getting comfortable with the DBH. I have since tried to add the DBH for returns without success. I am just too used to the OBH now and it's better than what my DBH used to be. Whether or not it's a good shot I can't say. When my slice is on, it's better than either my forehand or topspin BH.

Certainly prefer low balls and cross court. I CAN hit it off high balls but it's hard to attack unless you jump. I tried jumping up to take a short ball on the top of the bounce for a BH approach today and it worked so maybe I will try that henceforth. With DTL vs CC I just feel more comfortable redirecting to my opponent's backhand as well as it gives me more court to hit into.

I personally believe that you can still change to a two handed backhand or at least try it out longer if you practice enough, give it time and believe in yourself. When I first started playing, I found the one hand backhand to be mechanically simpler, however keep in mind I was not doing it as correctly as I am now so I actually did not know how much more difficult it was gonna become until once you get everything to click it then becomes instinctual and even more natural/automatic than the forehand.

Maybe the students and coaches where you are tend to gravitate towards the two handed backhand but I wonder what its like elsewhere and how a serious coach with a serious student goes about deciding. Cause I know Thiem's coach recommended him switching to a one handed even after being comfortable with a two handed backhand. If its the student they might choose one because of trying to emulate a favorite professional or naturally being more fluid with one. Good coach however can help if a student doesn't really know.

1HBH feels natural and less limiting...so much so that I cut my non-dominant arm off to make sure that I never hit 2HBH.

Too bad you need that opposite arm for a counter balance!

Not sure about manly, but I do feel like a little unique breed since there are so few well executed one handers especially in 4.0~4.5 level.
I like the flexibility and versatility with one hander - one hander is much easier to hit on the run or on the move. And, the hitting sensation does feel better with one hander at least for me.

Obviously, you need to figure out what works for you and make a decision for yourself. It's still tough to put pace on a high ball with two hander. One hander has a longer preparation and longer swing path till the contact point than two hander, but two hander requires a bit quicker feet.

Well said. If you're gonna play tennis, might as well do it right with a one handed backhand. Don't take the easy way out :D.

I played with a two hander for years and never once felt good hitting it.

It was never fun. It was always just a formality to keep the ball in play. The one hander is actually fun to hit. Even more fun than the forehand.

Probably more proud than manly. Humming ”I of the tiger” chin up and standing tall between points especially after a screaming top-spin onehander cros court hits the cutains like a bullet.

After opponent had figured ”where he’s gonna hit all day” makes it even more awarding.

I never thought about this in terms of being manly. I only hit with one hand because for some reason I could never hit the 2HBH properly.

Also because I'm short I frequently found myself stretching to reach balls on that side so over time I just learned how to hit a wicked slice BH whenever someone attacks it. It's gotten to the point now where I can slice as a weapon and can occasionally rip with top spin. I figure if Graf can get awa with that I can too.

That said I don't think there's any doubt that the 2HBH is a superior shot. When I think about the players with the best backhands almost all of them use two hands. Henin and Lendl are more the exception than the rule.

1hbh requires better footwork, and really to get them impacts into front, otherwise it’s gonna be weak, which it is for most rec players, what I’ve noticed. And therefore lot of them hit only slices.

People hit it too far back (top-spin) and close to the body (both slice and poor top-spins) for having any support behind the racket.

All that figured and really into sequensing it properly on both top-spin and slice 1hbh is more versatile than 2h. And it is more easy to fake, at least my opponents have told, they never knew, if there was a screamer or lazy high top-spinner, flat or a low penetrating slice comin’ up.

Reason for me to play one-handed is my back, which gave me hard times 35 odd years ago. Since gone first to Lendl’s I’ve just lately - probably fron 25+ years in golf - gone after Stanimal like backhander and also finessed some Fede moves with success on my level of play astonishing my peers frequently.
