If Madrid hosts 2020 Olympics, will Nadal play it?

Obviously if it is announced on September 7th 2013 that Madrid will host the 2020 Olympics, Nadal will want to play it. He is obsessed with the Olympics.

If by 2016 Nadal is still winning Roland Garros, it is obvious he will factor in 2020. Even if Nadal were to lose in a Roland Garros final or semi in 2017, it will still show he is capable of contending for the following years. I don't think Nadal will focus on 2020 yet, but as long as he is winning events (and he's about to win his 5th this year), Madrid will be too tempting to refuse.

And let's just presume that in the next few years he has a similar knee problem to what he had in 2012. He knows he can just take a 7 month break and return and win everything in sight. Or he could have the surgery. Either way, the last few months would have given him confidence that another long injury absence won't stop him from returning to the winners circle.

What do you think?

Agewise its theoretically possible. He'll only be 34, still a year younger than Tommy Haas is now! :)

Not sure if his knees will last that long, though!

Any knee problem is just a 7 month break away. Plus he has knee surgery up his sleeve if he ever needs it.

2020 would be Nadal's 15th Roland Garros title, unless Dimitrov can stop him.

He has no intention to play tennis that long.

I agree the plan might be to retire in 2016 because the only goals he really talks about is the Rio Olympics and Roland Garros, but it would be pretty hard to retire when you are on a huge winning streak at Roland Garros. I would have understood if Federer had retired after winning Wimbledon in 2012. He hadn't won a slam since 2010 AO. But would Nadal retire in 2016 if he had won every Roland Garros since 2010? Would be tempting to go after 20 slam titles. He's on 11 slam titles this year. Even if he only wins Roland Garros each year between now and 2016 he would be on 15 slam titles.

What posters on here fail to understand is that Nadal could basically retire from non-clay surfaces and become a clay court veteran grinder (as so many Spaniards before him were).

If he decides to do this I see no reason why his career couldn't last as long as Fed's or Agassi's. He may also be motivated by the GS record, which I still believe is within his reach. He could conceivably win another 6 French Opens!

Based on what Nadal's saying about his wheels, he doesn't think he'll be able to walk by then.

Good luck beating him at Roland Garros, any year. He only needed one leg last year vs Dj. And that leg has improved this year.

Will he come out of retirement? Doesn't Spain have enough players that they don't have to coax someone out of their wheelchair to play? Or maybe he'll play the Paralympics Games.

Do you think Nadal will retire when he is still defending champion of Roland Garros? Because until he gets beat again at Roland Garros, it makes retiring unlikely (especially when he's close to Federer's slam record). In fact, even if Nadal loses in a semi or final of Roland Garros, there would be a good chance of him continuing, because he loves to fight back after a loss.
