i'm a dumb@ss

i had a stress fracture in my wrist about two months ago and the doctors put a cast on it for me. yesterday i got the cast off and they told me that it healed nicely and that i could play tennis. my mom suggested that even though they said it was healed,i should still wait a little longer to be safe. i was too excited that i got my cast off and decided to play today. however, my wrist now feels horrible! i don't think my fracture was 100% healed, and i may have re-opened the little crack, which was probably almost fully healed. now i may have to begin the healing process all over again :[...had i listened to my mom and waited maybe two more weeks, it coudlve been fully healed. i feel horrible right now

maybe you healed alright. the bone, but still there is some atrophy of the muscle, that actually means that the muscle is smaller and not used to beworking. Just go slow, hit for 15 minutes at first, dotn rush things. And you will be fine.

Yeah, kids don't know how to moderate.
Recovering from any injuries, you gotta take it easy.
Swelling is a normal sign of resumed activity, even after the bone completelly heal, so just take it easy over the next 4 days and see how it goes.
Like, go slow at first, monitor, then slowly increase play.....

I had a spinal laminectomy surgery on Feb 5, now it's been about two months. I had the surgery because both my legs were going numb below the knees and I couldn't feel the bottoms of my feet. There is in addition a 6 inch scar on my back, and when I touch the incision area, it feels like there my hand is rubbing over a leather jacket, even though I am touching my own skin.

Although the doctor told me to be off tennis for 4-6 months, I started hitting against the wall again 4 weeks after surgery, and now I am just hitting against the ball machine. I can't hit against any opponent, because I can not run, and the use of my legs are limited.

No one knows your own body as well as you. The time frame that the doctors give you for recovery is pretty conservative, so I think that your cracked bone is probably indeed heeled. But remember, after any injury, things are usually never the same. Take it easy, and listen to your body. (Listening to your Mom is always good advice, too)

Having said this, I have hopes that my body will get well again, but I have this gut feeling that my injury will be permanent. My close doctor friend tells me that there are two things in our body that does not heal and regenerate. 1. muscle and 2. nerve. My case, is a damaged nerve, which will never heal. Your case is bones, which grows back.

So don't worry too much, rest the injury, work out slowly and rebuild your surrounding muscles that were out of commision for a while.

It might be. Just because something is healed does not mean it can take on stress easily.

The wrist area takes a lot of shock from when you hit the ball. Maybe, it is simply the tendons that need to be reconditioned and are sore now.

Check it out and make sure the fracture didnt reopen (somehow I doubt it did) and it probably has more to do with your ligaments and tendons in the wrist which is what the wrist area is made up.

Yeah, swelling, redness, and tenderness is always around when you first try to come back from any injuries, especially broken bones.
I've broken collarbones FOUR times. Broken tibs both legs in over 14 places, fibs in left leg over 7 places, and femur once. I know a little about recovery and resuming sports activities thru the years.

BUNGALOW BILL ..... In 1970, I was 14th rated 4A surfer in California. Rode Pipe lots later in life (your avatar), Cannons, Birdsh..tRock, 7thHole, LaJollaCove, Deadmans and Ft.Point, Seaside, Fullers, and almost every famous left point and reef on the WestCoast and Hawaii. Didn't start tennis until 1974. I'm mentioned in a couple of Maverick's history books and also the KevinStarr article in NewYorker's Mag, mid summer, 1980 as a famous or not so, big wave rider....

plus i use an extreme western grip, which is hard on the wrist. i'm trying to switch to more semi-western but that's like relearning how to hit the ball.

so would you guys suggest me to still play, but just take it slow?

Take it slowly man. I used to have really severe tennis elbow from overplaying. It actually took me ages for it to recover. I rested it for 6 months without moving it at all whilst doing physiotherapy 3 times a week (i think?). And then I got back to playing, but even then, I hard to start reaaaal slow, and I mean slow.

Actually, my elbow hurt when I restarted. Sometimes, there might be scar tissue where you got injuries, and so using the tissue or straining it might hurt again. But I'm sure you'll recover, just rest it, take it easy, and don't rush things.

Totally, I know exactly what you're talking about -_-! You get this urge to just pick up a racket. It's like you have these two long dangly arms and don't know what to do with them.

i knew i had a stress fracture from an x-ray. At first i felt just a little pain but didn't pay much attention to it, until it gradually got to the point where it hurt like a b*tch lol

those links were helpful thzz. hey tennis dude when u go back to play you should wrap your wrist up b4 u play with tape or sum sort of wrist brace it helps alot. i wear one through out the day :p but just a sweat band still effective!
