Going by their head to head and how Andy Murray has fared and struggled against Fabio Fognini during their past few matches, would you say that this is a fair assessment? Outside the the 'big 3' of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, I don't think I've ever seen Andy Murray struggle and in as much trouble consistently against any other player like against Fabio Fognini.

With 2 wins over clay, Fog's fav surface, and the other after Murray was coming from wrist injury?

Murray is far and away more accomplished than Fognini even on clay. So it is not like losing twice to him there is just nothing. He had Murray beat at the Olympics where Murray was playing excellent tennis and of course won the event, before choking. There is really no way around the idea he is a difficult match up for Murray.

Various players have their awkward match-ups against certain opponents. Outside of the Big 3, Fognini has been one for Murray and 2 others that spring to mind are Baghdatis and Kohlschreiber. He always seems to have a hard time whenever he plays those guys.

One thing's for sure, he has been on the receiving end of a beatdown every time he has played the Fog in Italy!

Did he go a up a break in the deciding set, I can't recall now?

I'm not sure I'd consider Kohlschreiber a similarly 'bad match up' factoring their lopsided head to head. However, isn't it interesting and even surprising how Andy Murray, even against all of his 'bad match ups' outside the big 3 (Federer, Nadal and Djokovic), he still doesn't have a losing record against any of them. Stanislas Wawrinka is another that comes to mind but I think with him, it's a case of both being evenly matched more than a match up problem itself.

Djokovic has a losing head to head against some of his bad match ups (Ivo Karlovic and Nick Kyrgious). Rafael Nadal also has a losing head to head against some of his bad match ups (Dustin Brown and Davydenko). Murray (and to some extent, Federer as well) seem to not have any losing record against anybody outside the big 3.

He is now 0-1 v Jordan Thompson. ;)

Finally, he has a new negative head to head. Problem is, they only played one match. Djokovic played Karlovic around 5 times and Davydenko and Nadal played nearly 10 times. So these are genuine negative head to heads. 1-0 isn't that conclusive.
