Was Djokovic's Aguerrroooo moment the 2019 Wimbledon final, or maybe the 2011 US Open semi-final win?

I'll never forget when a poor City team battling to avoid relegation beat us at Ewood Park in 1994/1995 and nearly wrecked our title chances, and then the next season when they thought that a draw against Liverpool on the final day of the season was sufficient to secure their Premier League survival and time wasted, but badly miscalculated and went down.

They were down in the 3rd tier in 1998/1999 when Utd were winning the treble, and 2 seasons before they hit the jackpot with their Abu Dhabi group takeover, scored 10 goals in their 19 home league matches (and 0 after New Year's day). To be fair for all the talk about the Emptihad and them lacking fans, they consistently had crowds of 30k plus at Maine Road (in Moss Side and one of the most intimidating away grounds that I’ve been to) when they were down in the 3rd tier while Utd were winning trophies for fun.

Both:

- Arrived on the scene later but have broken or are in the process of breaking all the records
- Are elitely ran and coached (Djokovic nutrition and training, Pep Guardiola and Eithad Campus)
- Play a ruthlessly efficient style that just demoralises opponents
- Target and go deep at all major competitions
- Have likely the highest peak (Man City 11/12, 13/14, 17/18, 18/19, 22/23). Liverpool @ Man City 2-1 18/19 probably the highest quality match ever played.
- Have likely faced the strongest competition (Man United 11/12, Liverpool 13/14, Chelsea 13/14, Liverpool 18/19 in particular, Liverpool 21/22)
- Have won major titles by slim margins (Man City PL 11/12, 13/14, 18/19, 21/22)

Discuss. ;)
The OP here is the quintessential Djokovic fan — supports some player because he’s winning more than anyone, looks at statistics and numbers and bean counts, glory hunts by hitching his own ride to the G.O.A.T. case for a player based on bean counting, and the only ever mention about style or entertainment is “ruthlessly efficient“ as if someone cares about that UNLESS it leads to wins and bean counting. Lol

Could you imagine sport is about winning and setting records if athlete can. What a disgrace. Once upon a time it was 17/302>>> whatever Djokovic or Nadal achieved at that point
Srsly this is your second time just in one day lashing out at Djokovic fans, generalizing and projecting. What is your problem? You think you're superior ? And the nerve to call others computer warriors:oops:

Arsenal can't afford to defend so poorly against City. Amy Irish said it best. ''They've done well but they were never going to win the league. They have Xhaka in midfield.'' I agree. He's a good wee player but you need great players. I've watched quite a bit of Arsenal and they are definitely missing Saliba. Just not sure how they will be able to keep City quiet.

City win because they have an unlimited budget and spent over a billion euros on building their squad.

Not really fair to compare that to a guy who grew up in an actual war zone

This comparison is an insult to Djokovic who has to fight for any new trophy just as hard as for the last, and deserves every single one of them just the same.

Compare that with the laughable situation in club football where (besides obviously still some small amount of good work or bad work) the chances are decided by mainly two factors:

1) Past success, which leads to more money and therefore better chances in the next competition as well. Equivalent would be for example if in tennis the winner of the past Slam would be allowed to have three attempts on serve instead of just two.

2) Random sponsors and nowadays especially investors or even owners of clubs who push "their" club forward, treating it like nothing more than a toy and bragging object. What a farce of a "competition" that is, if the "champion" is decided by the city or club that some investor randomly chooses. Oh, suddenly out of nothing a club like Manchester City is "good" because of that kind of money, and soon maybe Newcastle is "better" because their investor may be even richer. That decides which club has the better "material" (and yes, players only count as that for those investors). Equivalent to tennis would be if most of Djokovic's opponents were only allowed to play with a wooden racquet, while only he or very few others could use poly.

My second point here is the most decisive these days. However, even in a time where all that is legal and "normal", Manchester City still manages to cheat and have over 100 offenses. If there won't be sanctions again, then I couldn't understand how anyone continues watching such a farce. Even if I would have been City fan since my childhood, I would have turned my back on it when the oil money farce started. I'm very serious here when I say that I actually feel SAD for those fans, because the club indeed has an honorable past.

I'm quite happy that here in Germany investors still have much fewer possibilities, but it already started with clubs like RB Leipzig etc. And Bayern München destroys the competition with winning every title since 11 years, also only on money of course. They have almost twice as much money to spend every year as even the second richest team. So although I was a football fan for many years, I more and more only care for football history now, because club football is unwatchable these days, in actually every big European League.

So, as much as we often complain about modern tennis, in comparison our sport is in a decent state.

Was I being generous to City
They were a laughing stock in the past. A comedy club, peaking in the mid and late 1990s.

Tommy Docherty had the famous saying "There are three different types of Oxo cube. Red for beef stock, yellow for chicken stock, and sky blue for laughing stock."

Only Bayern Munich fans think it's fun to win the Bundesliga for 11 consecutive seasons.

I follow the whole euro football thing casually. And just from an American married to a German perspective, although this year was close, its hard for me to get invested. Its always the same or almost always the same with the other teams fighting for champions league spots or regulation spots. Its just oh look they get to play with the big boys. I dont know what the solution is but to me its kind of awful. And its even worse in the Spanish and French Leagues.

I get the impression the football press loves it. They just loveee to talk about the big teams all the time. Everything centers around the big teams, when they losing or oh look how well they are winning. The other teams dont really seem to matter. Unless they are fighting for staying in the league. A league which they cant win.

At least In Spain there is a duopoly and in France, despite the millionaire sheikh of PSG, they are not infallible in their domestic tournament, which they failed to win a couple of times in the last five years.
On the other hand, in the Bundesliga, even when Bayern donates the championship plate to their most dangerous "rival", their competition cannot take advantage of that gift.

WIth the American sports we have this playoff system which throws a wrench into the thing. The regular season helps with how you qualify but, well no one cares if you win that if you dont win the playoffs. If you win every single game of the year, it means nothing if you cant win the playoffs. I think for example the Dodgers in baseball won 116 games last year. Well congrats you still didnt hoist the real trophy.

That's why the GSW's loss in the 2016 Finals hurt so much, despite an immaculate, record-breaking regular season.

True. At the same time it gives the other teams a chance to win the championship. I mean Denver didnt have the best record in the NBA this year. Thats cool they won the championship. And they deserved it. I think American fans would have a a heart attack if they just said at the end of the season. Ok Milwaukee you the best you win. Bye.

To be fair to GS they broke down a bit in the Finals and got the unlucky Draymond suspension and Bogut injury. I think their level from the regular season when fully healthy would’ve won the title.

Just unlucky they ran into the most unstoppable force in basketball, peak LeBron

At club/professional level, football has become predictable. You have Bayern, PSG, Man City, Barca & Real dominating their own respective league. The likes of Liverpool & Atletico can only become champions when the top clubs have their down years.

However at the international level, the gap between Latin America/European national teams and Asian/African national teams has become much smaller. Saudi Arabia beat Argentina, Japan beat Spain & Germany, Morroco made it to the last 4. These results show that the world is catching up with Latin America/Europe and can become decent opposition against the football powerhouses.

At recreational level, football has become much more fun. People come up with loads of new challenges and invent new stuffs.

Man City are facing around 115 charges of industrial scale financial doping from 2009 to 2018, The fact that they've been allowed to get away with this for so long has only encouraged similar takeovers at other clubs, like Newcastle with the Saudis and Manchester United with the Qataris.

This has been a disaster for football. Big money has got football on life support.
