Anybody got the stats for this? Covering the amateur, pro and open eras.

I'd also be interested in the laver Newcombe head to heads covering the same 3 eras. (I know a young newcombe beat laver in the amateurs in late 62)

Hello. I have the head-to-heads but give a few days to get the data. Otherwise my email address is atas74@hotmail.com. Send me an email and I can send you Laver's complete career record.

My understanding is that the the pros of the 60's played many events for which there are no records. So, the "complete" records of the pros in the 60's may not be known.

Maybe a few events are not recorded or still not available. Joe McCauley has given a solid fundament of research for the old pro tour. But Andrew's stats are by far the best in the business. Even the new edition of "The Education of a Tennis Player" is relying on his stats. For Laver-Newcombe i have something like 16-5 in favor of Laver. The ATP has 12-3, i think, but they didn't count the Hilton Head matches nor the pre 1962 amateur matches.

It seems that the ATP doesn't count matches that weren't formerly Grand Prix (know known as the ATP), or WCT events. On another note, do you remember the final H2H between Laver and Ashe? If I recall correctly, Laver won 17 straight against Ashe before Ashe finally won a match against him. In the end, I think Ashe won 2-3 matches against an aging Laver.

Yes, Ashe won his first match after 18 or so losses against Laver in 1974 at the World Cup Australia vs. US, and beat Laver shortly thereafter in a WCT event. He tells about it in his book Portrait in Motion. In 1975, when Ashe was Nr. 1 of the World (in most eyes), he was still 0-2 against 37 years old Laver. The last match - i have seen on tv - was at Rotterdam in 1976, when Ashe came back from a set down and 1-4 deficit and won in 3 sets. Overall it was something of 21-3.
