Nice. What did you think of Chesnokov? Thought he was underrated, won 2 masters, was close to being in the finals of RG in 89. Beat Wilander twice in straight sets when he was defending champ at RG. It's pretty surprising that Leconte was 3-0 vs him at RG.

I thought he was a pretty solid player off both wings, played the right shots in general. I also watched Henri's RG match with Kulti which was quite similar in match up, but Chesnokov was willing to go for it a bit more, particulary off the BH. Apparently his thoughts about the match were 'whenever he went to net, I was in a rush' which were exactly my thoughts when I was watching. Leconte's slice approach was top notch when he got it right.

It was pretty classic Leconte with such a high variation in playing level. The winner stats say it all really, although I did think Chesnokov got more of a grip on his serve as the match went on. Henri definitely had his 'preferred' serves, especially in the deuce court!

If there is a boring Leconte match, I missed it. If there was an exciting Chesnikov match, I missed that too. But Henri could bring enough spark and personality for the both of them.

This one had a disproportionate number of wicked shots, see here
. Also a lesson on S&V tennis on clay in the first 2 sets from Henri

I was thinking why Chesnokov had trouble with Leconte but Wilander didn't. Unfortunately I haven't seen Wilander vs Leconte, but from what I've seen the key to beating Leconte is to keep the ball deep. I've seen Wilander not afraid to utilise moonballs, so I don't know whether that was something he used against Henri.

Obviously consistent depth is vital against a less predictable shotmaker like Henri because the further back He is, the worse the percentages of those plays. He plays like Hana Mandlikova. They will try the same spectacular shots regardless of what one does and they have enough pure talent to make a lot of them. Sometimes the Tennis Fates and Henri's mood are often in as much control of the match as the opponents are. He seemed awful nervous in that RG final v Wilander. Wilander played a perfect tactical match to punish any errors in the Leconte game. First serve percentage is another vital stat in any Leconte/Wilander match and Wilanders was unusually high.
