Dissapointed to see JB pull out w/ a foot injury he suffered in Davis Cup.

There is news to report now, but it's not the good kind- James has had to withdraw from Washington due to an injured foot he suffered while in Croatia. He's hoping to make it back in time for Montreal, but nothing's for certain at the moment.

http://jamesblaketennis.com/jb pages/09_news.htm

Hopefully nothing serious. Big opportunity for some pts lost for James. Really was looking forward to him making a run.

Oh well, life goes on.

Even without any of the top 4 that draw still looks like a pretty stacked field. Most of these guys (Roddick, Del Potro, Tsonga, Gonzalez, Soderling, Sela, Querrey, Haas, Cilic, Robredo, and Karlovic) have been looking in form this year.

Roddick has the big guy section-Karlovic, Querrey, Cilic.

Young getting a WC. He plays Hewitt. I smell a double bagel. lol

The winner of Soderling/JMDP in the QF will win the tourney. I say JMDP over Tsonga for the title.

Seems like such a long time since i've seen delpo, jo-willie, even hewitt and roddick ....... some of the seeds this w/b their first legg-mason .... good chance to get going on the olympus bonus! :)

wondering about qualies tomorrow ..... having a hard time connecting to the site at the moment.

I'm excited to see Soderling play on a hard court. I'm expecting big things from him, as his game suits hard courts better than clay courts.

Great looking draw, allez Jo and good luck Tommy!

It'll be intersting to see what sort of form Roddick is in given his injury lay off after such a great Wimby run.

That qualie draw looks like a futures event . . . where is everybody? And it's a bit of a scandal that Domijan and Janowitz, who are outside the top 500, are in the main draw. Janowitz isn't even American . . . who does he know?

I see Gael has withdrawn again. :? Anyone know when he will be back?

This tournament should give some clues about the rest of the American HC season. How is Roddick affected by his cruel defeat at W and his injury? Is JMDP up to expectations? Is JWT ready to close the gap with the top 6? Will hot players like Soderling, Haas keep it up? How much of a factor will the Americans (Querrey, Fish) be? Is Hewitt back for good?

Exciting!

i have no idea how these things work. domijan is american and janowicz is polish. both were given wild cards.

interesting. kubot, who is also polish and who was a finalist at serbian open earlier this year, also beat kohlschreiber a few weeks ago ... he's forced to qualify ....... i assume it has something to do with the "rules" being followed by those handing out the wild cards :???:

It probably has to do with agents . . . I get my big name player to your event if you give a WC to Donald Young . . .

By the way, I'm guessing Blake isn't injured, just tired. If he was willing to compete in Indy (for the right fee), I'm guessing he isn't really tired. And Washington has enough big names as it is.

but that doesnt really answer your original question, does it? I mean, you asked about the names domijan and janowicz, so which "big name players" might they be in exchange for?

Tsonga wont get past Isner =)

Tsonga won't get past Isner? Oh man, Tsonga is going to wreck Isner and everyone is his path...straight to 500 points, $300k and a shiny new trophy.

QFs:
Roddick d. Karlovic
Tsonga d. Berdych
Haas d. Gonzalez
Del Potro d. Soderling

SFs:
Tsonga d. Roddick in the match of tourney
Del Potro d. Haas

Finals:
Tsonga d. Del Potro

Well, I mean, qualifiers pending.

Tsonga has the service return of Roddick. he may or may not win but it will be in tie breaks unless he is moving amazing that day.

course that is IF Isners Ankle is at 100% again

I have to say, tough draw for Roddick. Karlovic is a tossup match. Cilic is a clean hitter; Roddick doesnt like, and Querrey is in form.

No offence, but i dont see much from Tsonga. Hes too out of form at the moment.

interesting ...
... except for two things:

1. delpo is the legg mason defending champion.
2. delpo has a 3-0 H2H against jowillie, two of which were on hard.

Kudla took a set from De Chaunac, not bad for his first ATP match, especially considering he hasn't even had deep runs at the Futures yet.

LG, I know you love JMdP, but keep in mind that when he was playing Legg Mason last year, almost everyone else (minus Roddick) was at the Olympics. Yes, he is defending champion, but there really is no comparison from last year's field to this year's field. That being said, I think he gained a lot of great experience last summer with all of his wins, he's certainly improved, and he is definitely will be one of the names to look for...he most certainly could repeat. Not ruling that out at all. But the 'defending champ' label is a bit moot, IMO, this year.

I'll be there every day starting Monday. *tickets in hand*

Lucky Lady, have a great week! Hope the guys you want to see don't dissapoint!

As much as I'd love for Tsonga to win, I don't think he's quite there right now. It's a bit hard to tell what form everyone will be in given that several of the big names here haven't really played since Wimby, perfect time to set up a good run at the masters though.

Just spent a day watching some of the qualies.

The local 16-year old Junior Ore got mauled by Brendan Evans 0 and 2 . . . it was ugly, and I only saw a few games. They really should have pros in the qualies.

Karlovic and Cilic were practicing. Karlovic is a surprisingly good volleyer.

Kevin Kim and Kendrick were also practicing and playing a match. His coach seemed to think his job was to cheer Kendrick on . . . it's a bit of a mystery what the coaches do exactly. About half have coaches, I would guess. Kim travels without a coach and seems to do fine. He told a funny crack about "carbon dating" a ball mark to see how old it was. Kendrick was very gracious with the fans, even though he was right in the middle of practice . . .

Gulbis and Gabashvili were playing a match. Gulbis shanked about every other forehand. I fetched one shank and threw it back to him . . . we had a moment. It didn't seem like EG had a coach, which may be part of his problem. He is fascinating to watch tho. Misses way too many easy shots, even in practice. Gabashvili walks around like Bruno . . .

Ginepri and Robredo were practicing. Both have great strokes. Robredo is going on a bike tour of DC tomorrow at the Old Post Office . . . I think he'd be pretty surprised if anybody recognized him.

So that was my four hours at the tournie . . . What other sport can you walk around and walk right past the pros? When you go to a basketball game, Chris Paul isn't carrying his bag past the hot dog stand.

Yeah. But as much as I love JWT she's right about Delpo vs. Tsonga.

Roddick-Tsonga and Delpo-Haas would be very interesting SFs and I think every one of them has a good shot at taking the title. Delpo has the edge IMO unless he faces Roddick in the final. OTOH, he has a very tough draw with a potential clash vs. Soderling in the QF and the upset is quite possible there.

Do you really enjoy watching that much pro tennis? I was there for almost 5 hours and that was plenty for me. I would maybe go 2 days just for a chance to see several different players either practicing or playing, but anything more than that and I would surely get bored.

Plus the food prices are absolutely rediculous. I spent $6.50 for a slice of pizza. I was expecting like an individual pizza, not a slice. And beer is $6.00 for 12oz. Even baseball games and rock concerts are not as expensive because you at least get bigger portions for the money.

I hope Gulbis at least makes it past the second round..he needs to step up his singles game..he's doing good in doubles as of late though...

Yup, I do. I also meet up with lots of friends when I go.

I also use the free off-site parking, I bring my own food, and I don't drink beer.

I've written a Legg Mason blog for the last few years as well.

apparently play is suspended due to weather

Yup, we had some big thunderstorms roll through early morning and it was still raining off and on until about an hour ago. Still gray and cloudy, but it has stopped raining in my neck of the woods.

I've sat through a few rain delays there...the crew is very fast at getting the courts dried off and ready to go.

It'll be interesting to see if Domijan makes it. He was in the futures final in Godfrey this morning and had to retire after winning the first set and going to 5-5 in the second. He was cramping, threw up. After a few games like this, he cramped up, his legs gave out and he practically just collapsed. He laid there for about 15 minutes. They called an ambulance and he was taken away on a stretcher. They did say his vitals were OK though. Probably just severe full body cramps.
