Most Impressive Achievement

What do you think is the more impressive achievement of the open era?

1. Most consecutive years winning a grand slam? Currently Borg, Sampras, Federer, and Nadal share this record at 8 consecutive years. Nadal will be able to break the record this year.

2. Most years winning a grand slam? Currently Sampras has this record with 10 years.

3. Most years between winning first and last grand slam? Currently Sampras has this record with 12 years.

Based on your threads, you're easily impressed with trivia OP :)

Is the OP misogynist? He cites Sampras as holding the record of 12 years between first and last slam title when in fact Margaret Court went 13 years between her first and last AO titles.

The rule on these forums is "Unless stated otherwise, Tennis shall refer to Men's tennis in the Open Era"

Not misogynist at all. And if I was including women than I would consider Evert's streak of winning a grand slam for 13 consecutive years as the most impressive achievement of the one's I listed above.

^^ so YOU in fact ARE the misogynist, among others. I tend to think of professional tennis (this is the pro player forum, not the male pro player forum) as played by men and women.

I kind like Most years between winning first and last grand slam.

a handful of players have got red hot for 5-7 years winning slams

but I like something about a young kid comming in winning slams...and then an old man going out still able to win a slam.

and with the way the game is played now a days it's going to be really hard for anyone to get those twilight years wins

Hmmm this is really really tough. I am torn between 1 and 2 but I think I will go for 2. That's 10 seperate years you are good enough to win a slam. 8 in a row is great but you can get unlucky and go slamless one year for different reasons. The 12 year gap is amazing, but let's say if someone won a slam early and then spent years doing nothing and won a slam 12 years later, that wouldn't be the best record imo. Obviously Sampras won 12 slams between his first and last but that's not important to the feat in question, just the gap between slams is what is, and unless you win a lot inbetween it's not as impressive in my opinion.

I know we are all about winning grand slams, but where do the following achievements rank as well?

1. Most consecutive years reaching a grand slam final. Currently 11 tied by Lendl and Sampras. This is pretty phenomenal, as Federer is at 10, and it wouldn't surprise me if he didn't reach a final this year. I can not see Nadal reaching a final for the next three years.

2. Most years reaching a grand slam final. Currently 12 by Sampras. Again, this is impressive. I don't know about Federer reaching at least a final in two different years.

3. Most years between reaching a grand slam final. Currently 15 by Agassi. This is just insane.

I agree, 10 years winning a slam means you were capable of an extremely high level 10 years apart. The 12 yr span could be many things, someone could burst on the scene, then take a break from tennis and come back and win.

15 1/4 years for Agassi actually, still very impressive.

Yeah, 10 years of winning slams is an amazing stat - not just at a high level 10 years apart, but in ten seperate years.

Amazing stuff, again I probably would pick number 2. 3 is really impressive too but it's top stuff to be good enough to reach a slam final in 12 different years. Federer still has two years to even match this.

I would say - most years winning a slam - shows longevity, followed by - most consecutive years winning a slam - shows consistency.
Not too impressed by most years in between slams, could even be argued for inconsistency in this instance
