My Super Cheap Reels. Has anyone tried them?

Ok I have always liked the company Ashaway, since they are a family business and are the only USA string makers.

I just bought 2 cheap reels to try out.

$19.00 Ashaway Monofire Reel 17g (1.25 mm) Gold Length: 660'
Durability: 8.5
Playability: 7
Ashaway Monofire is a polyester monofilament offering firm playability and extended durability. Power players and chronic string breakers will love this string.

$28.00 Ashaway Mono Gut Reel 17g Silver 330'
Composition: Multi-polymer monofilament Synthetic Gut
Durability: 8.5
Playability: 8
Ashaway MonoGut is a multi-polymer monofilament that has gut-like playability but wears like a tough monofilament. Recommended for power players who break synthetic gut easily and find hybrids too stiff.

Has anyone tried them?

The other is what we call a Hard-Core Polyester, similar to Bab Ballistic, Wilson Polylast, or BB Orig.

If you've used one, you've used them all.

TennisProPaul- what are your thoughts on the monofire 17g? Do you use it as a full poly-job? And if i may ask, what level of player are you? Thanks!

My reel will arrive Thurs, so after I string up a frame and play I will let you know.

Im a 5.0 some days, and a 6.0 on my best day, so Im a 5.5.

monogut is a great string, it has the nice control and durability of a poly, with a softer feel- all at a great price

I dont think monogut is a poly. I see no information calling this string a poly. Its a syn gut

TPPaul- Thanks for getting back to me, I'm looking forward to hearing about it! Also, if you don't like the monofire, maybe you can unload it on me.

The monogut is indeed a good deal. It loses tension/gets a bit trampoline-y a little quick for my tastes, the muted feel is similar to ALU, but doesn't play like ALU, it's not a bad string at a great price. I'm also a fan of ashaway strings.

its listed as a polyester-based string on TW, but your probably right that it is a synthetic gut... but once you play with it youll notice that it is a lot like a poly because the strings do not move at all, feel much stiffer than most syn. guts- yet it feels softer than most polys. and if u read the reviews for it on TW youll see that many ppl said it was very similiar to alu power.

I will start to pull twice (on my star 2) the strings that tend to loose alot of tension. This might reduce greatly the tension loss, or so I hear.

a reel of BB original is $170 compare to the same reel of monofire for $19, surely theres a big difference in quality

the difference in price between alu rough and cyber flash is $240 vs. $68

According to s-t-r-i-n-g forum . net there is not very much difference in quality.

Just because something has the durability of a poly doesn't mean that it is a poly.

I've bought and used similar string from Klipper. I must say the playability is pretty good and people I have strung for have liked it.
