Nadal's new racquet weight the reason for matching Djok on Djok's favorite surface?

Djok changed his racquet a couple of years ago, but he seemed to play below his best for a year and then became a hardcore force after that year of adapting and reached the 2010 Wimbledon semis and 2010 US Open final.

Nadal whereas has seemingly adjusted within just one month, and presumably will get even better as he now has all of February to train with it. But was this racquet weight change the true difference for Nadal reaching Djok 2.0's level?

If it was the racquet, then that has big implications for Nadal's year, as Nadal continues to adjust.

oh my dear.. your life of trolishness is well documented. dont act all surprised!!!

Not 100% sure the racquet is giving him more depth. It may be just his frame of mind being different, placing an emphasis on attack.

That's exactly what he just did in this AO final - 44 winners and 71 unforced errors. If he didn't go for winners when he was down 0-40 in the 4th set, we wouldn't have had a 5th set.

I think Djokovic falling to the canvas twice in the 5th set may have made Nadal believe in playing a bit more defensively to extend the rallies.

Still, hard to argue with the results, Nadal was up a break in the 5th, and that would usually be good enough for a win. So whatever is going on with Nadal's game right now, is the right thing.

I agree with your sig, this final really did bury Djok physically, far more so than Nadal. Djok hit the canvas twice in the 5th set. One more 40 shot rally, and I wouldn't have been surprised if he fainted.

Nadal will be fine physically, as he's got February off (though obviously he will train plenty, adjusting to his new racquet weight still).

Djok whereas, not sure how he will cope with it. Djok had a good break after last year's US Open and still finished the season with a whimper.

nadalwon2012 - Nadal lost because Djokovic is better than him in this matchup, no way around it. It was always like this except Nadal always had the mental edge, and now he lost it, so Djokovic will win most of the times. Nadal has lost in 3 different slams to Djokovic and would have probably lost last year's FO to Djokovic if Fed would have allowed him to make the final.

So did Nadal.

Djokovic has shown time and again that he isn't easily fatigued. He also knows that in order to sustain himself for the important points, he can also shorten the points and go for winners. That's why he can outlast Nadal. He does to Nadal what Nadal does to every other player on tour.

The added weight on Nadal's racquet did allow him to get a lot of depth on his shots, especially his forehand.

I'm starting to wonder if clay might be the worst surface for Nadal to play against Djokovic. Nadal can't hit through Djokovic like he could on the AO surface (and even that wasn't easy), and Novak's defense is, at the moment, better than Nadal's. On clay, Nadal doesn't have much to hurt Djokovic with.

Djokovic will probably make adjustments as well. You can't expect just Nadal to change without it affecting Djokovic as well. I'm sure Novak and Vajda know exactly what to do with the added weight and depth coming from Nadal's shots.
