NFL Playoffs

Let me just start this week by saying pro football can't even come close to what happened last night. Congrats to Boise State on an incredible game. I thought I would break down the playoff matchups this week, just to switch it up a bit.

NFC Wild Card Playoffs:

Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks- Last week I predicted early exits for both of these teams, but since they play each other this week obviously someone has to win. The Cowboys have struggled lately and the Seahawks are coming off a win in week 17, with Alexander and Hasselbeck playing better. That combined with homefield gives the Seahawks an advantage. My pick, Seattle 24-17.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles- I hate the NFC. The New York Football Giants do not deserve a playoff berth. Couldn't we take an extra AFC team and stick them in? Anything to keep a team that lost 6 of their last 8 out of the playoffs. That said, Philly is at home, with a ton of momentum and a win against the G men in NY under their belts. My pick, Philly 28-14.

Side Note: The Bears are in trouble. Sorry Bear fans, but oh my god. Remeber that 1.3 QB rating that Rex had a few weeks ago? Did you ever think is could get worse? Well it did. Last week, against a non playoff team AT HOME, Rex completed more passes to the Defense than he did to the offense. 2-12, 33 yds, 3 INTs (two taken back for touchdowns) and a QB rating of ZERO. Griese didn't fare much better in the 2nd half, throwing 2 INTs. I feel bad for Bear fans, because your QB is KILLING you.

AFC Wild Card Playoffs:

Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapoils Colts- There are two teams the Colts do not want to face in the playoffs: The Chargers and the Chiefs. LJ and the Chiefs will be in Indy, and if they establish the run game early the Colts will be in trouble. I think the Colts are up for the challenge, though, and pick them to slow down LJ and get after Trent Green all day. My pick, Colts 31-28.

New York Jets at New England Patriots- This is the game of the week in my opinion. The pupil takes on the teacher, Mangini v. Belicheck, and the Jets, who won at NE in November finished the season strong, winning 5 of 7 after their bye week. That said, who wants to bet agianst Brady and Belicheck in January? Not me. Pats win a close one 17-14.

A few other things:

My heart goes out the Family of Darrent Williams and the Denver Broncos. 24 years old, and shot outside of a nightclub on New Years day. Such a tragedy, and might make coaches look long and hard at the nightlife of players in the future.

Way to go Vince Young and the Titans. After an 0-5 start, Young went 8-5 as a starter on a "bad" team, and brought a lot of hope for the future of this team.

The Bengals were such a disappointment this year with all that wasted talent. 8-8 just isn't good enough for a team with those weapons.

R.I.P to Jim "is that UW gig available yet?" Mora and Denny "the Bears are who we thought they were!" Green as coaches. Best of luck in the future guys.

More playoff talk next week for sure, but until then...

The Bears game....ugg...hmm... yeah this one actually shook my confidence. It really seemed like Rex had fixed himself, and had figured out how to play within himself a little, but this shows it can happen at any time for him. I've never seen a quaterback look worse than he did this game. Just horrific. I don't think the Bears will lay a stinker like that in the playoffs, but who knows at this point.

I agree that there really should a rule that an 8-8 team cannot make the playoffs. Take a team from the other conference, like you said.

Quick WC picks:

Dallas stinks, but Seattle's secondary injuries makes me think Dallas wins this one in a shootout. Plus I hate Dallas, so they'll probably win. 35-31

Giants will beat the Eagles, just because the universe loves to prove the experts wrong. 21-17

Indy controls the clock on offense, scores a lot, and forces KC to pass too much. Should look like the Cincy game. 31-21

Only winning team Jets beat this year was NE, and it was close. Now playoff NE shows up and ends the Jets nice season. 17-10

My teams, Seattle and Chicago will both lose. I've got a feeling Dallas's recievers are going to torch that hobbled Seattle secondary, and I've got a feeling that Grossman is gonna fold like a leaf under the pressure of the entire windy city's expectations. This Super Bowl could be a total blowout.

Anyone else seeing the Colt's defense being demolished by LJ?

Also, the Bears played horribly on purpose, to make everyone think they were done for. It worked didn't it?:)
As you can tell, I was born in Chicago.

Dallas closed the season so badly that I think that Seattle will win, but I agree that the Seattle secondary is a concern and I hope T.O keeps dropping passes and Romo fumbles 4 times again, lol. I just think if you lose at home to the Lions you shouldn't be able to win in the playoffs.

Grossman must be hurting right now, and he has two weeks to think about how bad he played...good times for Grossy.

I think that LJ could run all over the Colts, but I think that Peyton is going to come out firing and put up a lead, forcing the Chiefs to run the ball. If the Colts have to play from behind though, Manning will be watching from the sidelines as his team gets owned on the ground. I just feel like this is the year that the Colts win a playoff game or two, but I don't see them beating the Ravens and/or the Chargers and getting to the Super Bowl.

Griese really didn't look much better. I guess he can use lack of play time as an excuse.

Yeah Griese looked bad too, I was going to put his two INTs in my original post, but it was already getting wordy (a problem of mine, lol). I think one of two things will happen to Chicago in their first playoff game: Rex shakes off his dismal performance in week 17 and lays one on their opponent, while the Defense plays well and they dominate both sides of the ball. -OR- Grossman comes out and plays terribly and he's benched for Griese who also plays bad. The defense would probably struggle in this situation too. It really seems to me that in the second half of the season the Bears are either hot or very cold.

My upset is KC over the Colts - yes, you heard me right - the Colts can't stop the run and KC had the second best runner in the league. Then - Cowboys, Eagles, Pats.

While I'd LOVE to see the Chiefs beat the Colts, most of us locals are seeing it the other way. It's been like FOREVER since the Chiefs won a play-off game. And, not to mention that our new coach seems hellbent on playing Trent Green (who has sucked lately) instead of backup Damon Huard who's been playing very well. Huard seems to throw to Gonzalaz a lot more than Green does, and if Gonzalas and Larry Johnson BOTH get lots of touches we should do well. We'll see, I guess...

Whats up Big Server?. Sorry I have not been participating lately as I was on a walk about.

Anyway, while I was gone my Boys have absolutely crumbled. I don't see them beating the Seahwaks.

I got the eagles, colts, and pats also moving on.

Damn the NFC is pathetic. This sucks!

Hey no worries Drak, it's nice to see you back in the action. Dallas is indeed in trouble, but Seattle has no secondary (neither does Dallas) and I think this one's gonna be a shootout. The good news for Dallas is that it's a road game, so they might win (this one is a total toss-up).

I like Philly a lot, they run the ball well (finally) and Garcia is a great game manager, although he doesn't have the greatest playoff reputation, but I looke for him to mend that this week. If the Giants win, I might just quit watching football.

To everyone that thinks that the Chiefs are going to upset Indy, think again. The Colts this year are 8-0 at home, and 7-2 when they allow a 100 yard rusher. Trent Green can't hang score for score with Peyton, and LJ just won't be enough.

I like the Pats to move on this week. My heart says NYJ, but I can't bet against Tom Terrific and Belicheck come January.

yes - it was painful to watch.:-( but hey - without romo, they wouldn't have been there in the first place. not a lot of solace for cowboy fans i know. stinks to be at such a low place, but sometimes that humbling experience could be what makes the difference in the future for the guy. and the team.

Seahawks have the look of a team of destiny, ala the Steelers last year. If they can get some DBs healthy, they could really put a dent in this thing.

moreso than the saints?

In my opinion, the Saints are riding an emotional wave and any team that faces them in N.O. is in for a big fight. That offense is pretty darn good.

But no, the Saints have not overcome the injuries and adversity in games late like Seattle has this season - remember, Josh Brown hit four game-winning FG's this year too. They are survivors and the Super Bowl experience of last year is proving extremely beneficial to this team.

I won't go so far as to say they'll win it all though.
