Novak Djokovic Trolled By Chris Evert For Calling Rivalry With Nadal 'greatest In Tennis'

Thing is, you can't compare men's and women's tennis, they are two completely different leagues who will never play against one another for obvious reasons.

Comparing Martina, Chrissie and Serena to Federer, Nadal and Djokovic is straight up pointless...that's like comparing Sue Bird (WNBA player) to LeBron James

No need to pressure Djokovic into exact phrasings, he's a sportsperson not a scientist or a journalist and giving interviews as such.

Theirs is the most prolific Open Era male singles rivalry indeed. Still hesitate to call it 'da greatest' with these limitations, due to a high number of one-sided matches.

The same could be said about a lot of the Navr./Evert contests! Many were total blowouts; esp. the early matches on clay to Evert! Chris was always able to stay competitive on the other surfaces; actually defeating Martina on grass once or twice! It's the same with Nadovic; there was a learning curve! The momentum changed/moved from one player to another! It became more competitive, then the rivalry totally changed where one dominated! Everybody's right so they need to just "get over it!" I'm as big a fan as any of Navratilova, but history will still just look at the numbers and women's tennis just won't be talked about the way the men have always been talked about! Sorry! Even though Nole's technically correct when it comes to his rivalry with Rafa, history and commentators will probably only speak of Fedal! Their rivalry is the one the tennis intelligentsia raves about the most which proves history is only reliable as the people who quote it!

The one and only shot that wta players execute better than atp players is the dh inside out backhand shot!!!! So much of noise these people make.. pheww empty vessels make more noise indeed

He recently said he doesn't believe in God. Is that mainstream PC opinion too?
Well I do not think anyone will attack him for this, it is his private decision. About topics like Serena’s greatness, equal prize money, Margaret Court etc he would never state any opinion which deviates only one inch from what SJWs wanna hear. Pathetic actually.

Exactly. For every one with even two brain cells it is clear what he meant. It is so annoying that certain folks demand each and every statement precisely specifying each and every detail to not offend anyone.
Out of jealousy. Yes they are jealous that they dont get the same attention, recognition, fame as men do get. This trend is passing into cricket too , Mithali raj, Alyssa Healy are voicing their so called (un) justified dissent.

As with the God question I think we can believe that his opinions are genuinely his own.

18-time Grand Slam winner Chris Evert has called out Men's World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on a statement he made after his French Open final loss to Rafael Nadal.

Former Women's World No. 1 Chris Evert has called out current Men's World No. 1 Novak Djokovic on a statement he made after his French Open final loss to Rafael Nadal. Women in sport have long been fighting for visibility and equal respect from audiences and broadcasters, and this is just one such example of how men's sport is considered the default while women's sport is mentioned as an afterthought.

The greatest rivalry in tennis?
In the trophy presentation ceremony at French Open 2020, this year's runner-up Novak Djokovic made a statement that while innocent, showed the mindset of male players when it comes to recounting sporting records and legends. In his acceptance speech, Djokovic mentioned that he and Rafa had the greatest rivalry in tennis history and had played each other the maximum number of times in the history of the game.

While Novak Djokovic was technically correct, he missed out on an important detail. His rivalry with Rafa is the greatest in the men's game. The actual greatest rivalry in tennis was between Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert and the latter was quick to point this out. Navratilova also joined in on the conversation to school the many people who claimed that her rivalry with Evert mattered less, or that Novak Djokovic's non-mention of the word "men" was acceptable. The tweet was also mentioned by 12-time Grand Slam champion Billie Jean King.

Well yea it was the mens finals why would joekovid be talking about the WTA???? Cant wait till they merge the ATP and WTA so we can see what level the WTA is in comparison :-D:-D

This thread is at an intersection between misogyny and Djokovic that has the potential to be the most popular thread on TT EVAH!

If Chris Evert were playing today, she'd be nothing more than a journey-woman player. She was lucky to play when she did when there were only a handful of good players and the first rounds of any tournament were usually 40 minute, 6-0, 6-1 affairs.

Besides, Djokodal rivalry is WAY too overrated. 12 of their last 14 matches have been decided in straight sets.

So true. After 4 consecutive slam final meetings against Nadal starting at 2011 Wimbledon, it was believed this would be common (the Nadal-Djokovic era). But there would be just one more meeting (another sorry final) at the USO, and 7 years would go by before another match-up at the AO and Wimbledon. During his peak/prime years of 2011 - 2016, Djokovic met Murray more often at the slams (and in slam finals) than Rafa.

I don't see anything objectionable from either side. Djokovic was clearly talking about men's tennis (Open era men's tennis too, because Laver and Rosewall played way more times than Djokodal). And Evert was just reminding him that women's tennis still has the record.

SImple as that! People are bored; gotta kvetch about something! "Create the drama!"

?

WTP=ATP?

Should we call it WTPATP?

Or UTA (Unisex Tennis Association)?

When will Serena play Djokovic? Will betting houses even allow bets?

So you are too stupid to understand the difference between a sport and its governing bodies...

OK champ

Im sure there were great junior rivals as well, but do we really compare that to the atp? :-D:-D:-D

On a side note, this is the first time chrissy hasnt brought up Sir Weiner when it comes to the greatest anything.

by this logic, greats of the past, like Ali and Pele would be ranked below what this forum loves to call "journeymen", "mugs" and "clowns"
Tennis is the only sport where the "fans" denigrate the great players of the past.

Who would downgrade Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Hank Aaron? No baseball fan would claim that these giants could not lift a baseball bat today, that would be ridiculous.

What about Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus? Would any golf analyst claim that these players would not be able to compete with today's golfers? In fact, no, today's golf experts believe that the former greats compare well against the stars of the PGA today.

Only in tennis do you hear the whining about former players not being worth mentioning, because they lacked the talent of today's stars......pure nonsense.

if big 3 end at 20 majors each, it would mean Pete is goat because he dominated everyone in his era while big 3 didn't because they were all tied

I put Federer and Sampras "up there" because of their Wimbledon and USO combos alone! Those are the ones counted "back in the day!" Few went "down under" and many skipped the FO avoiding the clay specialists! :sneaky:

This was on ESPN2 before it took off so many didn't see this live! I was a Jim Rome fan and listened to his radio show daily, catching these live interviews ever so often! It was shocking to see Jim not only taunt the guy, but pretty much dare Everett to assault him! That was a mistake; being a football player and all! WTF was he to do? Nothing happened that I can remember except Rome maybe getting cancelled!

And no one 20 years from now will know (or care) who Fed, Nadal or Djokovic are. Dissing past tennis generations screams of ignorance. Nobody cares about Borg-McEnroe? Lendl-Mac? Connors-Borg? Perhaps you don't, but why presume to speak for others?
I was just trying to provoke. :censored:

Has anyone ever written a book about women's tennis or made a film, like (Borg & McEnroe) Fire & Ice, about it?

Not that I know of, but I understand Elton John's song "Philadelphia freedom" was about Billie Jean King. But men's tennis can match that as "Don't get me wrong" by "the Pretenders" I heard was written by Chrissie Hynde, initially for John McEnroe to perform himself, when she was dating him? (Correct me if I'm wrong) But he was too busy with tennis, so she made it her own song, with "the Pretenders", I'm assuming it was about McEnroe!?

"I've played [Rafa] more than I [have] played any other player in my professional career. Our head-to-head is the biggest head-to-head ever in the history of the sport... he's definitely my greatest rival."

(In other words: "I am certainly the GOAT, and Nadal is my closest rival--not Roger. I let Rafa win occasionally, otherwise our rivalry would not be interesting. What makes it great, however, is that I am the greatest.")

A pretty self-inflating thing to say, right after a major loss.

I hope you aren't a professional translator.

But you'd be a great political spin-doctor.

I love the things the ex players say about LeBron claiming he's the GOAT:

"There's a certain thing about greatness that demands you have humility."
... and all of them say things along the lines that GOATness is for the fans, pundits, and esp. other pro players to decide. You don't get to call yourself the GOAT, others do. But esp. the part about respecting the past champions. That's the mark of a true champion.
