Overgrip over leather

well at some point in time you might need to replace the leather grip. But i think it will take a really long time before you need to change it. By the time it needs change, maybe you will already break/sell the reacket...

take a look at the nice looking leather grip after an overgrip has been on for a couple of months of use, disgustinnnnnngg, all the sweat from the over grip sips through to the leather and dries there,
seen this first hand on some of my racquets that had the original grip
my suggestion, use the same plastic that came with the overgrip or seran wrap plastic and wrap the leather overgrip first, and then put the overgrip, this will prevent the sweat from getting to the leather, this will keep your leather clean and dry, and because the plastic is not thick their is no issue with adding to the grip size
i do this on all my racquets when i have fresh grips underneed as well and want to keep them clean as long as possible

Two things. Wouldn't that plastic "reflect" sweat back at the overgrip increasing the wear rate?

Also, I'm doing a little experiment where I'm oiling two of my leather grips with neatsfoot oil and leaving two more dry and seeing how they wear. The purpose of oiling leather has always been to protect from moisture damage, so will see how it works.

if u use an overgrip, why does the color on the leather grip matters? in fact all grip colors will change over time, no matter u use some iron grip or platinum grip.

something that doesn't matter has gone into your head.

yes, but overgrips are cheaper to replace than leather grips,
thus far i have not run into notisable issue because of it, dont know if its the yonnex overgraps i use, they seem to be fairly thick and spongy

Just my view. I use leather grips EXACTLY because they have the ability, on a hot and humid day, to suck up moisture coming through the overwrap.

Plastic grips just don't do this. No capacity to do this.

I then change the overgrip ASAP, so more water can get sucked up. I also wear cotton wristbands. Regarding oiling the grip, I don't think that I would do that, since that might affect the leather's gripping ability. For cleaning, I have on occasion used Murphy's soap.

MAX, how much would you say the leather grips add to the thickness of the grip, reason i ask is cause i have 3 overgraps on right now and want to wither build it up with a leather one and maybe 1 overgrap or just bite the bullet and buy the shrinkwrapp stuff to build up grips
by the way 1 overgrap is suppose to add 1/16" thickness to handle

I have leather grips, and always use an overgrip for them. I would just say that you should use the overgrip and change it regularly either after every match or every two given how much you sweat. Wilson's pro overgrips are nice, much better than the residue left by tournagrips

Generally overgrip needs to be changed regularly depending on the amount of play time and playing style. The whole purpose of an overgrip is to provide cushioning and traction so it doesn't slip. The tackiness (that gives the grip)of an overgrip usually wear out after 6 hours of play for me and thats when I put on a new one. Some people even change it every 2 hours, some every 2 matches and some every two weeks. You are never supposed to leave the overgrip on the racquet for long period of time even if you are not playing with it, and a couple of months would be way too long.

your right, and i see what your saying, but there are people who dont change overgrips as much as that
i am one that changes every 2 hours or 2 hitting sessions, or at least i flip it over, but still, the sweat however long on the handle wil seap to the lower grips and if its leather, its not gonna look good, unless you take steps to keep it like that, seran wrap plastic or similar could help with that, i plan to do this when i try a leather grip and then an over-grip

if you wanna keep the leather or original grip clean, wrap it with plastic before you throw on the other over grips, otherwise its gonna get nasty overtime

then why do you need that leather grip at all?

just buy a big grip size and wrap an overgrip on top of it.

the whole point of having a grip is for sweat absorption and comfort. and now you are defeating this purpose by putting a plastic between them. if you are so worried about that leather grip, then u shouldn't put it on your racket but display it in your living room, clean it and worship it every day.

i currently have 3 overgrips right on the tennis racquet handle on my 3 sticks, one of them has 4, i discarded the original grip from the racquet years ago when i removed the overgrip out of curiousity and saw how disgusting it looked after months of play, but in any case, i thought that a leather grip would be much ticker than a synthetic overgrip and allow me to use less overgrips to get to the right size i need to build up to my hand size, also for the fact that people have been talking about how a leather grip gives more feel to the handle and still maintains the vevels on the handle, not a big issue at this time since i can still see and feel the vevels, but if there is something better or a better setup than the one i have, i would like to try that, the plastic i use, is to keep a clean overgrip clean while i use the one on top of it to play, once its time to rotate, then the bottom one comes up to the top and its as fresh as a new oevrgrip should be
as for putting a leather grip underneath and wrapping it in plastic first, thats just to prevent what happened to the original grip i descrived earlier, while no one else would see it, i would when i replace the overgrip ontop of it, and it would ensure that it would stay clean for how ever long i have it

Happened to be googling stuff about grips and noticed this a good way i keep my original grip clean is by wrapping medical gauze around the original grip. It absorbs all the sweat that goes through my overgrip without drastically changing grip size since its so thin.

Leather grip isn't all that expensive, except fairway, so if it brothers you that much, replace it every few months or year, depending on your ware/stain.

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all.

definately true, because some go through 30bucks of overgrips a month, and a leather grip only cost 10bucks, and it lasts just as long, just remember an overgrip is about a buck a pop
