Tennis ace held for 'date rape'
By Cara Lee

An Australian tennis pro has been arrested over date rape allegations.

Paul Hanley, 30, who lives in Sutton, has been bailed by police after a woman in her 20s claimed he sexually assaulted her.

It is alleged that Melbourne-born Hanley invited the woman back to his home after they met at a bar near the All England Club in Wimbledon.

She later made a complaint to police.

A file has been sent to prosecutors, and Hanley has been bailed to report to police next month.

Hanley is a doubles specialist and reached the finals of the Wimbledon Championships in 2005.

Surprised there wasn't a thread I could find on this.

So what did she go over to his home for:

a) to check out his stamp collection ?
b) meet his pet hamster ?
c) See what o-ports actually look like
???????????

The woman is obviously making this story up.

Everyone knows tennis players don't get any.

Hanley had some interesting singles match (with I can't recall who) at the 2007 Australian Open. Other that I haven't had the chance to watch more of him. I assume she expected to see what kind of a doubles specialist he is... but she saw no expertise in his specialism... was even so repugnant by it that decided to call the police and report him for his lack of specialty. Maybe next time she should try the Bryan brothers!

date rape is nearly impossible to prove, we will never truly know either way if he did it unless one of them admits they are lying, hes that really ugly guy right (orge comes to mind)?

Yeah its hard to really determine who is more likely to be telling the truth in these types of cases. That brings me to the question. What is a worse crime, a date rape or a false allegation that could potentially put an innocent person behind bars for several years?

Someone who is willing to get an innocent person behind bars is just as spineless if not more so than an actual criminal.

Bon voyage to you then!

Can't take a joke? Of course it isn't an invitation. But there are two sides to everything, and in this case the man is ALWAYS to blame until he proves otherwise. I'm sick of the double standard.

Yeah, I have my doubts about this story, and as a woman, if this woman is lying she cheapens every other woman who has really had to deal with this and I would take her out myself if I could. If this is true, then Paul needs to be dealt with appropriately.

Accepting an invitation to a man's home is not the same as accepting an invitation to a hotel room, but the boundaries need to be clearly stated before you walk through the door. It's naive to think that situations like that don't create expectations for both parties.

Better to let the law take its course instead of speculating without any basis. Too many morons around who have opinions about a case based on a few sentences they read or two seconds of a TV clip.

I didn't see a joke--next time try and include some humor as a clue.

What I read about the case was that he was accused of rape. His guilt is for a court to decide.
