Shot clock lengthens matches: The Economist

The 2019 Washington event was 2.0 seconds per point longer with the shot clock.

Nadal took 50.9 seconds per point in Toronto title match compared to 47.2 seconds on average in the other matches, which was more than his previous hard court season.

Nadal v Federer:

In 2017, Mr Nadal averaged 45.5 seconds per point played—a figure that includes time elapsed during play, as well as breaks between games and sets. That was the most of any top player, and 27% more than the 35.7 seconds per point of Roger Federer, his long-time rival.

Never knew the shotclock could predict what will happen in future tournaments too! Is that another unintended consequence of its introduction?

Interesting article. May make organisers re-think what exactly it is they want from the shotclock!

Yes, well, I was looking at a website selling 2019 diaries at the time, so I had next year on the brain.

Getting the umpires to call the score more uniformly or just setting the clock to twenty seconds would fix the problem.

Do they consider court speed changes, or the vastly differing weather seen year to year - such as this year vs last year in Cincinnati?

I can't see the article text beyond the first few paragraphs.

Had no idea you were a subscriber to this rag.

"You've reached your article limit." is what I see.

Remember last year Nadal got his teeth kicked in by Shapo and those points wouldn't have been long at all.:D

Social Science vs hard science. Perhaps they need to stick with screwing up the world economy.;)

Yes, well, I can't be a subscriber if I've reached my limit.

Your anecdotal reminiscence is evocative but hardly places you in a position to judge what real science is.

I used to read the Economist in the nineties, but then it had fat juicy issues with a lot of analytical reporting that was reasonably light on ideology.

Trailblazer. They don't seem to concerned about data in this article (able to read on another device).

I actually don't mind if the match is longer breaks etc as long as the time between points is shorter if that makes sense. Sometimes watching Nadal between points can be brutal.

They're are yet another news outlet with dwindling resources so they are not going to spend a lot of money cracking this very small nut.
