Some NCAA 1st round hosts may not be in top 16...

From Bobby Knight's twitter today " Going to be interesting this year with a top 16 ranking not guaranteeing you a host spot come May. The NCAA will announce host sites a week from Friday (April 16). They will use team ranking and geographic consideration when selecting sites."
From Collegetennisranks twitter: "Bid packets for hosting the first two rounds of NCAA's are due today. I believe selections are to be announced next week. If those selections are announced next week then that is before conference tournaments which clearly means the Top 16 don't host unless pure luck. I have no knowledge of whether the NCAA is even giving any preference at all to teams ranked in the Top 16 but if so it will likely have to be this week's ranking or next week's ranking that would be used as input. Should be interesting to see how it all plays out

If we look at current top 16 (or projected for 4/5) vs 2019, this year there are 10 schools in South or FL vs 6 in '19. Only Illinois from Big 10 (2 teams in 19) and USC from PAC12 (3 teams in '19) are currently in top 16. I wonder if NCAA will add Western/Midwestern or north/NE (in '19 there was Columbia) sites so fewer 3 and 4 seeds will have to fly if almost all the top 16 teams are S/SW. There were 4 teams from Tex in '19-same for current top 16. Hard to believe OSU is currently ranked #19 and projected to be #23-really hurt by conference-only matches after kickoff. I wonder if OSU will be one of the non top 16 teams selected as a host. Of course we dont know which teams submitted bids and/or if ITA will tweak computer rankings more before NCAA team selection in early May. Currently the NCAAs says selections at each site will be announced 5/3 but matches would start 4-5 days later. Not a lot of time to book flights for teams that will have to fly plus travel budgets are lower this year. Usually NCAA tries to maximize placement at sites of teams within a 400 mile drive. I wonder if they will up the drive to more miles if more teams are in the S/SW corner, and ADs dont want teams to fly due to both COVID and budget.

Currently there are 7 SEC teams in top 16 and Kentucky projected to be #17 on 4/5 list. Since hosting sites will be selected prior to SEC tourney, this weekend's matches will be critical for the SEC teams ranked slightly higher or lower than 16. 10 SEC teams are projected to be in top 26 on 4/5 list. Oklahoma State is another close to the cut for top 16. Arizona's loss to Stanford probably cost them a hosting site.
