Stats for 1991 FO Final (Courier-Agassi)

Moose Malloy

G.O.A.T.
Courier d Agassi 36, 64, 26, 61, 64

Courier was seeded 9, Agassi 4.

My stats:

Courier had 32 non service winners: 17 fh, 6, bh, 4 fhv, 3 bhv, 2 ov
Agassi had 40: 20 fh, 7 bh, 6 fhv, 3 bhv, 4

Winners by set:
Courier: 2, 11, 5, 5, 9
Agassi: 10, 16, 7, 1, 6

I counted one return winner for each player.

Courier had 7 aces, 2 doubles
Agassi had 2 aces, 2 doubles(but according to atp tennis Courier had 9 aces & Agassi had 1. krosero, do you know of any published stats on this match?)

Courier was 6 of 13 on break points, Agassi was 5 of 19(my stats match up with atp tennis on this)

Courier had 25 unreturned serves, of which I judged 4 as service winners.
Agassi had 15 unreturned serves, of which I judged 2 as service winners.

NBC's stats:

After 4 sets, they had Agassi at 41 winners, 49 unforced errors. They had Courier at 35 winners, 45 unforced errors.

At 3-3 in the 5th, they had Agassi at 29 of 38 at net & Courier at 25 of 36.
I was a bit surprised at how much both came in.

This match was famous for the bit of coaching advice Jose Higueras gave Courier during a 23 minute rain delay at 1-3, deuce, Courier serving(he had just saved a bp when the rain came)
Jose told Courier to stand back a bit further to work his way into the rallies since Agassi had been overpowering him for a set & a half. Joanne Russell just interviewed Jose minutes before the rain delay where he told her that he hoped that it would rain soon & that that's what he would tell Jim if he could.

There was another rain delay(16 minutes) at 3-3, deuce, Courier serving.

Jimmy Connors said that Agassi only showed up on the grounds 40 minutes before the match & was unsure if he even warmed up beforehand.

Connors also said that he thought Courier hit harder than Agassi, saying that he puts more of his whole body into each shot, while Agassi is a more relaxed striker of the ball.

Dick Enberg said that Agassi claimed to have gained 20 lbs of muscle since the '90 FO Final & that he could bench 250. A thinner Gil Reyes was in Agassi's box during this match.

was surprised to see the umpire(Bruno Rebeuh) refuse to check marks a few times throughout the match(& its not like either player was questioning a lot of calls)

Connors seemed annoyed by this, saying, "umpires need to be consistent, why check this mark & not the other one?"

I mentioned in another thread that this is not only the only all-American final at the French in the Open Era, but also likely the only all-American clay final in any European or South American event in the Open Era.

Per the NY Times and San Jose Mercury News, Courier made 58 unforced errors, Agassi 65.

I think we're seeing a pattern now, where the ATP figures for aces and doubles are often different from ours, sometimes higher and sometimes lower, though never by more than 1 or 2.

One thing I found interesting about the ATP stats is that both men served at 60%, and on first-serve points they were almost equal, 65% to 64%. Courier had an edge only on second serve points: 57% to 49%. That's where he pulled away.

ATP stats

All I could find to compare with the ATP stats is this from the AP:

Courier won only five of his 145 points on volleys in a five-set victory over Andre Agassi in the men's final at Roland Garros. Seles did not attempt a single volley in her 6-3, 6-4 victory over Arantxa Sanchez Vicario.
The ATP has the same number, 145 points won by Courier (and 133 by Agassi).
