The First Time I Ever Heard Your Voice...New Music That Changed "The Game" For You!

In honor of the epic "Music Game" thread that I and many friends contribute to, I was hoping a separate thread could be an expression of the first times we have heard a performer or group that really changed the dynamics of our music experience.

I go way back and was an impressionable pre-teen when The Beatles hit the airwaves and that was thoroughly revolutionary but a big moment for me came years later when I first heard Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company. I played my copy of "Piece of My Heart" until the grooves were flat! What a voice, so full of emotion! My attention, however, was divided at that time because at the time I was also getting into The Jimi Hendrix Experience. While that was going on, the Fab 4 had morphed into the Psychedelic 4 and then into the Apple 4. My turntable was stacked with Joplin, the JME and the White Album. Pretty good vibes from all! Then, the next summer came Led Zep, Santana and The Moody Blues.

Anyway, share your moments when music changed your listening habits. I'd love to hear what shaped your listening patterns, when it happened and why the new sounds influenced you enough to mention them!

I must be a contemporary of stringertom, maybe a tad younger...

My older brother had some Peter, Paul & Mary, Kingston Trio and such that I liked, plus he started me on Simon & Garfunkel that I took up with a vengeance. Liked the Beatles, though it took me a while to catch on. Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Steppenwolf for some reason. Getting into college, Neil Young, John Prine, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen. Later on Tom Petty, Townes van Zandt, Steve Earle.

Things also changed for me the first time I heard The Allman Brothers Band. Up to then, Southern Rock didn't exist and I was living only 150 miles from Macon, GA which was grounz zero for that genre. They came and played many times in Tallahassee and I was fortunate to work on the stage crew for all of their gigs. They would play a full set for a couple of hours, take a break and come back for another hour. What an incredible stroke of luck for me to have that job!

The next big change in sound for me was "Greetings From Asbury Park" by Springsteen. I had always liked Bob Dylan but now here came a kid who ROCKED Dylanesque! I saw him live as a warm-up act for Chicago @MSG even before I bought the album. He stole the show!

BTW, Ronnie...your link wouldn't play on my iPhone. Do you have another working code for it? I would love to hear what you posted.

Icona Pop - I Love It

That's the song he posted. It's a really fun song, but having read what you've been affected by, I doubt it will have the same impact on you.
