The Movie Recommendation Request Thread

Not to be confused with threads where people talk about movies they have seen and issue their recommendations about them.

This is more like: "Hey, you know what? I feel like watching an action movie with a drama subplot about a person that is dying. Or maybe a vampire drama. Or a comedy with zombies, or whatever."

Just make a request for a specific type of movie. It can include genre, plot points, time period depicted, time it was produced, actors, or even director. Then, anyone can quote your post and recommend you a movie. Multiple recommendations are fine too.

Another useful type of request would be to ask for movies similar in tone or feeling to another movie. As in: "I really feel like watching a movie similar to Punch Drunk Love."

Quick note: It's much move useful to make recommendations quoting the post you are recommending to.

So here is my first request. I would like to watch an old movie drama focusing on the damaging effects of war on people. But please do not recommend the following, as I have watched them relatively recently:
Johnny Got His Gun
Paths of Glory
The Deer Hunter

Thanks!

Taxi Driver is a 1976 American neo-noir[4] psychological thriller film[5] directed by Martin Scorsese, written by Paul Schrader, and starring Robert De Niro, Jodie Foster, Cybill Shepherd, Harvey Keitel, Peter Boyle, Albert Brooks and Leonard Harris. Set in a decaying New York City following the Vietnam War, the film tells the story of a lonely veteran (De Niro) working as a taxi driver, who descends into insanity as he plots to assassinate both the presidential candidate (Harris) for whom the woman he is infatuated with (Shepherd) works, and the pimp (Keitel) of an underage prostitute (Foster) he befriends.

I enjoyed Full Metal Jacket, Empire of the Sun and The Boy in Striped Pajamas. Not a war film but a natural disaster film and its tragic consequences -- try Aftershock (2010 and Chinese).

Disclaimer: none of the above are old movies.

I saw this a couple of years ago and forgot he was a veteran, thank you. Great Scorsese movie. I'm also partial to anything scored by Bernie Herrmann.

Thank you for the recommendations. I just remembered I watched Come and See in High School for a project, and that I was impacted by it at the time. The other two I haven't watched, so I will start the search. And I even want to watch Come and See again, it was that good. Cinema being a language of its own, I find Russian movies have a complete different flavor and they are very interesting to watch. The original Solyaris is so much better than the American remake from the 2000s that it's not even funny.

Thank you, I never watched The Boy in Stiped Pajamas. The other two I have watched a few years ago, but it's been too long for Empire of the Sun, so I can watch it as well. I've never heard of Aftershock.

OK, I have enough war movies to be on my way to alcoholism and suicide, thank you to everyone who pushed me to an early grave. ;)
But I already planned your night!

Here's the room for your television:

The room comes complete with drinks, films, and music!

Some where in the past I saw a movie where Tilda Swinton was in a love scene where she total naked and I must very impressed by her figure. Just had to mention it since I a big fan of hers now because of her exposure!:giggle:
Tilda is something special.
Think I’ve watched all her movies. A great actress. I love her icy cold expression. Jepp. She god a good figure indeed. She is almost not from this earth in a way. She is like 50 years old too, got roles playing 20 year olds now as well.

Tilda is really talented and has a strong theatrical background. Her husband was an artist and I think she's now dating a painter; she approaches film as an art form and makes interesting choices in film roles. As a bonus for @Harry Wild, she is comfortable with her body as an actress.

Sir Ridley
Zemeckis

As I got older:

A lot of talented directors and quality films are coming from Mexico, usually with very interesting cinematography.

My God, all these recommendations. Anyone can use this thread now to ask for further recommendations. I'm editing the OP to add the obvious mention of recommendation by similarity.

I have Melancholia and Blue is the Warmest Color on DVD, and really like both. I think Nymphomaniac is the only Lars von Trier film I haven't seen. Based on the title, it should have been a top priority. How did you like it?

Le Samourai is a great film and I have it on DVD, and somewhere I have Being There on DVD, bot I haven't seen it for a long time. I want to see Das Lied In Mir.

Nymphomaniac is a fantastic movie.
Charlotte is playing very well, it’s a joy to watch. Movie got many plots and maybe different than you would expect.

This is a beauty: The Perfect Human, Jørgen Leith (1967)

Almost 40 years later, von Trier challenged Leith to do remakes in natural human environments:
"Motion Picture" -- Jørgen Leith (1970)

Incidentally, the tennis player is Torben Ulrich, father of Lars Ulrich, the drummer for Metallica.

Men In War 1957
(Robert Ryan, Aldo Ray, Vic Morrow, A.J. Edward)
Very gloomy movie set in September 1950. Korean war started June 1950.
It is a about what is left of a rifle platoon now just trying get back to their lines deep in enemy territory.

Robert Ryan in real life was a Marine drill sergeant in WWII and college boxing champion. After the war, Ryan went to Dartmouth College.

Vic Morrow plays a coward!

Aldo Ray plays a hard case sergeant trying to get his shell shocked Colonel back to their line so he can be back to normal.

A.J. Edwards plays a black soldier in 1950s.

Director was Anthony Mann, famous for his westerns. Anthony Mann was disapointed with the end result of U.S. version.

There will be blood
It largely depends on what you like about There will be Blood.
Is it Daniel Day Lewis's performance?
Or is it the tone, the setting, the tension of the movie?
So because I don't know what you are looking for I will try to give an answer that covers all of it.
First of all watch all the movies of Paul Thomas Anderson if you haven't already.
More specifically his first three feature length movies- Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia.
They don't have the same themes as There will be Blood. But the magic is same.
Also The Master by PTA is awesome.

Similar movies to There will be Blood by other directors are:
The Assassination of Jesse James(2007).
True Grit(2010).
3:10 to Yuma(2007).
Django Unchained(2012).
Meek's Cutoff(2010).
Matewan(1987).
No country for old man
Again watch a lot of stuff from the director of the movie. Coen brothers in this case.
A similar movie (in the sense of having really strong protagonist and antagonist and being a great thriller) is Heat(1995) by Michael Mann.
The Dark Knight(2008) is similar in that way too.
No Country for Old Men is first and foremost a thriller. It is dark, violent, suspenseful and has everything one wants from a thriller and it still feels realistic and kind of western. It's what you called a modern western. It's one of the few near-perfect movies I have seen.
So based on all that sometime ago I myself was looking for similar movies and I found these:
Hell or High Water(2016).
The Searchers(1956).
Touch of Evil(1958).
Bring me the Head of Alfredo Garcia(1974).
The Place beyond the Pines(2012).
The Hateful Eight(2015).
Sicario(2015).
Gone Girl(2014).
Jackie Brown(1997).
Gangs of New York(2002).
Miller's Crossing(1990).
Chinatown(1974).
The L.A. Confidential(1997).
The Usual Suspects(1995).
Mystic River(2003).
Mud(2012).
Blue Ruin(2013).

David Fincher has a similar style to the Coen Brothers.
Some of Fincher's movies which are absolutely brilliant thrillers are:
Se7en.
The Game.
Fight Club.
Panic Room.
Zodiac.
The girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Gone Girl(already mentioned above).
