The music industry moving forward.

Back in my high school days there were a lot of bands and solo singers around the world that have endured long successful
careers and iconic status. There were also a lot of shows that were watched around the world including American and Australian Bandstand, Midnight special, Solid Gold and Countdown and rage and then MTV. There were lots of night time and midday live entertainment shows that gave artists an opportunity to perform live or mime to their Albums.
Lots of tours and LP albums with their artistic covers that people used to buy and collect. You could go to your local record store, pick up your top 40 singles chart sheet and listen with headphones to all the new releases and buy your instruments from there as well.
Apart from the Rolling Stones, Beatles and Elvis which are the obvious choices of major artists of their time there was a plethora of talent including David Bowie, Queen, ABBA, Eagles, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, George Michael , Jackson’s, The Cars. Madonna, Whitney. Prince, ELO, Elton John, America, Chicargo, AC/DC, Fleetwood MAC, Rod Stewart, Hall and Oates, Pink Floyd, Dylan, Bee Gees, Olivia Newton John, George Benson just to name a few, there are many more obviously and I have missed all the country singers as well.
I can remember the hysteria surrounding KiZZ when they toured Australia in 1980 and people trying to spy on them to snap a picture of them without their make up
on.
What I want to discuss is has the industry shrunk in talent pool? Is it harder for them to cut through and make a name for themselves and are we relying too much on reality TV to find the next talent. Just now the number

Just now the number 1 song in Australia is a remix of an Elton John song with Dua Lipa - Cold Heart and it’s been in the charts for 22 weeks.
What do you think?

Ugh, 40% of the sales are rap songs. 20% are country and 30% are pop and 10% are the rest! listen to more rap then pop now and I an old guy. You just have to get use to the presentation and it grows on you. For extreme topics, you have gangsta rap.

The fact of the matter is commercial radio and TV since the 80s paved the way for lame confirmist industry sruff to crowd out talent and innovation and originality.
Same in energy and food industry. Too much power in conservative hands it seems. Not to mention Politics, lobby groups.. Lol.
This is actual reality.

Hi Chris, thx for your comments, are you able to elaborate on what you mean about a confirmist industry sruff please?
Also I thought that the industry of the arts was heavily controlled and dominated by more progressive minded business entities. Which conservative hands in your words have had too much power in the music industry!

The problem is almost too much content now. It gets pumped out so hard and so fast, and you have stars being made from TikTok and youtube. There was a time where some musicians were larger than life, that's pretty much gone now, and you don't necessarily have to be talented anymore.

Basically artists/record companies used to make money selling the music. Concerts were extravagant and tickets were cheap to promote album sales, which paid the bills. Now music is free and concert tickets are expensive. Anyone can make and distribute music for very little investment.

Truth is, both before and now, there are many more talented artists than opportunities to make serious money creating art/music. It's basically luck. Currently the luck has an avenue through reality shows and social media, but it's still luck.

Is someone like a David Bowie a once in a generation artist?
What about the talents of Prince or even the enduring ability of someone like a Jeff Lynne ( ELO) who has a massive catalogue of music and produced many other artists including Roy Orbison, George Harrison and Bryan Adams!
I was even looking at the exploits of GE Smith as an excellent guitarist for many people including Hall and Oates and another guitarist, Earl Slick, who composed many of David Bowie’s riffs and Steve Stevens and his work for Billy Idol, plus Brian May and Mark Knopfler. These musicians are quite special.
The Live Aid concerts in the UK and USA was quite a line up of excellent talent. Even Ultravox with Midge Ure’s powerful voice and Billy Curie’s Violin and keyboard skills were of high quality in a live setting.
And if you think about original female artists , Kate Bush’s unique voice and artistry in the 80’s was magical.
Who would be the most likely to rise to the top in the next few years.

This certainly not happening in the U.S. Hollywood, Pro Sports, Educational(university, teacher unions, liberal teachers/school boards) and Tech Elites control almost all media and restrict views to only PC agenda.

Ken Tamplin does a good summary of how we got there in this video:

You will find there is a lot of splendid talent even bubbling just outside the top 20 on the charts or so.

This is Lianne La Havas. She has charted as high as #26 on the Billboard Top Albums chart and #2 in UK. She sings, plays guitar and writes her own music. And yet, it wouldn't surprise me if you haven't heard her because one is forced to look outside the conventional sources like radio, Spotify/Apple top 10, etc to find good music.

To make good music, especially lyric-wise, you need to be a free spirit. Singing by itself is not a big deal. It is the lyrics and rhyming that matter. For that, you need free-spirited people who are not suppressed by right-wing politicians trying to impose a narrow view of morality. That is harder and harder to come by.
