Toni: Rafa fit enough to win RG right now

He didn't look fit enough when he was getting tired in the second set of MC.... No clue what they're talking about here. Looked to me like he has ALOT of fitness work ahead of his still. He has some time tho, not like he can't do it.

I will say, fitness aside, his strokes looked alot better than they had earlier in the year. So thats encouraging. Plus there's no guarantee that he'll even have to play Djoker at RG and most other players will wilt in the face of RG Mode Rafa.

Nah, let the best man win. But all of this knee-jerk stuff is fascinating. I was reading the old Djokovic-Nadal USO 2013 match thread and most of the fans including many Djokovic fans were saying that Djokovic was done and he would never beat Nadal in a slam again. Same thing happened after Nadal's loss to Djokovic at the AO 2012 where people were saying Nadal was done and he would never beat Djokovic again.

I have been reading this sort of thing for many years about great champions and I know better by now to never write off these great champions. I would be shocked if Nadal never defeated Djokovic again especially in a slam situation. These two have a close rivalry where one person usually goes on a streak and wins several matches in a row and then it shifts. I am also not seeing the major physical decline with Nadal that many posters claim to see either.

All streaks come to an end eventually.

Don't you mean you'd be shocked if Djokovic never beat Nadal again in a slam cc0?

If Nadal and Djokovic meet at Roland Garros then Nadal will push the slam h2h up to 10-3 and the winning streak will be at 5.
This really shows how weak Djokovic's prime years have been, that Nadal can win 5 in a row over him at slams despite Nadal's prime being 2008-2010.
Its surreal domination.

ETA: I also feel concerned about his form in general (nothing to do with Djoko). It is not the norm for him to arrive at this point in the season without a slam or master final.

That's true, although he's clearly better at Monte Carlo this year than he was last year (when he lost to Ferrer in straight sets).
And we are about to compare his Barcelona form to last year (when he lost to Almagro).
I agree with Toni, Nadal is in good enough form to win Roland Garros right now I don't think Djokovic would survive those close games on the bouncier RG clay (and the different court size).

Your so caught up in your own delusions. You have lost track of reality

How dare he get tired after hour and a half of gruesome tennis. How dare he!
Did you get tired in your armchair?

And ALOT is not a word.

It's illogical to think Nadal suddenly becomes good enough to win a major while he is playing bad all the year AND the year before. How does his strength come from? the air?

Last year he played very well through slow hard courts season, gone to the final of AO. He showed he was capable of doing good at majors even before RG.

It's amazing isn't it? And yet you just know the same thing will happen again this year. Nadal at RG is a dragon that really needs to be slayed.

LOL, Nadal made the QF of this year's AO with no physical preparation (and 3 of his 5 matches were straight sets wins).
That's how great he is at slams.

Good post. While things may be looking bleak, I've seen this happen far too many times to count Rafa out just yet. I also believe that his problems are more mental than physical. Might be the cause of Toni's expression of confidence, as opposed to the usual guarded expectations I'm used to seeing from Team Nadal.

Whether this change of tune bodes well... is yet to be seen. However Rafa has at least three clay tournaments left to find form.

Seriously, if you want a good chuckle, go read some of those old match threads. When Djokovic lost the USO 2013 to Nadal almost every poster including staunch Djokovic fans were saying Djokovic was done and would never beat Nadal in a slam again.

The overreaction when players win or lose is nothing more than hysteria and it always seems to change among greats of the game unless that great has lost motivation (i.e. like McEnroe or Wilander back in the day.) Once a player loses motivation, it is finished but if the player still has the drive to do more, rarely does he fade away so fast.

I think both of them will probably have plenty of opportunities to beat each other in future slams. Look at the pattern of their entire rivalry which has been up and down with both players having winning streaks.

I'd be ok with anyone but Nadal winning it. Not sure why you'd mention Djokovic when he's never won the tournament.

Because you said we finally need to see a new champion at RG which implies that you would be ok with "any" new champion not only Djokovic as a new champion.

Somehow, I think if somebody like Nishikori was the "new" champion and not Djokovic you would not so happy about it.

I would be happy for Nishikori but not for at least a few days after the tournament had finished.

I know. Some would label you a Nadal hater but we both know you only want others to win

Not a hater, I just don't want to see him winning anything as I know that will give him confidence and I'd very much like to see my favourite player win the tournament Nadal's already won nine friggin' times.

Do you think Nadal will win Barcelona?

... you realize that when Rafa goes for RG#10 he has to play MORE matches in a row and those matches are 5 set matches... And you're questioning the significance of him admitting he got tired in the second set of a BO3 tourney....

... wut....?

I swear, it sounds like luck is involved with players wanting one or another winning.

It seems to be that a player needs to be popular on tour.
