Under-rated! Quick take on the Volkl V-sense 8 315g

If you've seen my other posts lately you know I've been searching for a good replacement for my 2017 Babolat Pure Drive 16x19s which were giving me arm trouble. The bottom line is that this Volkl may be the closest viable option I've found yet. I'm surprised that it gets scant mention on the forums.

The specs on this racquet make it a bit of an oddball. The thicker beam, 100" head, 16x18 pattern and reputation for competing against the Pure Drive scream "tweener" but the 315g static weight and 328 swing weight are closer to player's specs. As with many of the newer "player's tweeners" like the DR 98 and Pure Strike, this one also has an irregular string pattern that has 8 mains up the middle and relatively dense spacing in the sweet zone. I ended up looking at this stick because I was about 80% sold on the Prince Phantom 100 and, aside from the very different beam and flex, the Volkl actually has nearly identical specs.

I found it very easy to pick up this racquet for the first time and play against some very good players without embarrassing myself. It has easy depth and pace without being too difficult to control; I hit a few good drop shots and touch angles within the first 30 minutes. Stability is excellent for the weight class. I had a few loose swings go long that might have dropped inside the line with the Phantom, but the trade off is a more penetrating shot on good swings. I found the depth and power level comparable to the Pure Strike 16x19, and just a bit more than the Pure Strike 18x20. Another reasonable comparison in terms of performance is the Prince Textreme Tour 100p (note I've never tried the Textreme Warrior).

It is much more crisp and linear feeling than the Phantom, but it still has above-average comfort for a stiff frame. The closest comparison that I've played lately is my Six.One 18x20. Both are around 67 or 68 RA but feel relatively plush unless you take one right off the tip.

The biggest weakness of this frame may be the paint job. This could very well be the ugliest frame I've ever owned, with garish reds, yellows, and an oddly uneven base grey coat. The design looks like it was outsourced to an intern at Crayola.

I ordered this racquet strung but when it arrived I was disappointed to find it felt a good 10 lbs looser than it was supposed to be. I quickly restrung it with Babolat VS Team @ 56 in the mains and Tecnifibre Red Code Wax 17 @ 53 in the crosses (I use this hybrid a lot) and found this be a good crisp but forgiving setup.

definitely a nice frame to hit with, well worth a look if the weight suits you, though my thought about the grey paint was that the guy doing the painting started working on it, went out for lunch, tried to pick up where he'd left off when he got back

Hope it works out for you.
You can always paint it, if it bothers you.
I do them all the way I like my coffee, black..
(If they bother me)

Oh ...
in a nutshell, volkl is underrated.
Reason, more followers (easy path) than trail blazers (takes there time and finds the best for them, period) ...

Have fun

The string pattern seems to be not that open considering it's a 16x18
Doesn't it feel a bit boardy? How is spin?

Other question: how can you add weight in the handle of Volkl frames? I think the only way is to wrap lead tape but my concern is that it would increase the grip size

I find the racquet to have plenty of spin potential. It's certainly no Phantom or "spin effect" frame but it's only 16x18 in a 100" head, so there's plenty of space for the strings to flex and grip. If I were really concerned about it, I'm sure a stringing solution like Tour Bite at low tension would solve the problem. I haven't worried about how to add weight to the handle, but you're right that the butt cap and grip are parts of the vibration reduction system so changing them would change the feel of the racquet.

I played again with this last night in comparison to the Phantom and Pure Strike 18x20. I think another reason that some people think it's not spin friendly is that it is relatively heavy and not as headlight as other similar racquets, making it slightly harder to get that aggressive racquet head speed. Mine measures between 6-7pt HL. My Phantom and my old Tour 100p are both around 9, and the Tour was lighter as well.

I guess I'm in the minority but I actually like the paint job. I have one of these as well as the VSense 8-300 and the VSense 9 here to demo. VSense 9 is by far the ugliest.

There are Loads of under-rated frames around And it is utterly connected with who endorses it.

I'm pretty sure that If shapovalov played with this volkl there would be a 15 pages threads trending on "Pro Gear" and "Racquets" sections.

I picked up a V Sense 8 300g.. not to bad I must say.. a little light.. but the ball it hits is fun..
Spin and kick is superior to most. I have found that it plays better with big swings.. slower swings cause slight control issues.
Plan to add a little weight up north to increase heft and swing weight..
Big demo for me right now in the bag: 2018 PD, Ezone 100, V8 300G.. All are very nice in their own way..

How would you compare the V8 300 to the 2018 PD?

PD would suite a wider range of player.. I can hit a bigger ball with the PD.. The PD better suites a slightly more advanced player compared to the V8.
The V8 is easier to use and produces more spin with less effort...it swings fast.. almost to fast for me..
I can use both with out issue at 4.0 singles and doubles. Both hold up well..
If I had to pick.. I'd pick the PD.. but V8 is a noble back up which it is at the moment.
I do like the easy kick of the V8.. This weekend I plan to add a little weight to the V8 to match the spec of the PD.. Then that would be a fair comparison..
To me the V8 plays like a spin effect racket, but with control..without technique adjustment and without the strangely high launch angle..

I have not playtested the VSense 8 but many reported that it is much more comfortable than the PD. That is the most attractive thing for me with that stick.

i don't see much difference between the 2 in that category to b honest.. 2018 PD that is..
In terms of comfort.. Not performance. sorry for confusion..
18 PD and V8 300..

The V8 315g is almost half an ounce heavier than the standard Pure Drive; it fits between the PD and the PD Tour in terms of weight and it's less stiff than either of them. The string pattern is also different.

I put 1/4 inch lead tape on volkl handle. I don't mess with going inside the handle instead I put lead tape on the handle pallet. To avoid grip size increase:

1. Wrap it around 7" mark - good place to offset head weight at 3/9 o'clock. 7" from the butt and most frames begin to taper in. You can add 2 or 3 layers and not really notice it.
2. Wrap it around the bottom of the butt cap under the grip. This will give you the biggest shift in balance for the least weight. You can get 1/4" tape right on the very bottom of the butt cap.
3. Add single layer strips on the handle either wrapped around the handle or going from the butt up toward throat. You probably will not notice any added increase in grip size because 1/4" lead tape isn't that thick but if you do, purchase a Bab Skin Feel synthetic grip as these are a bit thinner than most stock grips. I use these grips. By the way, the Bab Skin Feel is thinner and it also seems to be a couple of grams heavier than a lot of stock grips - it is denser.
4. Use a thin leather grip - this will usually add a little weight and you can apply it over lead tape strips. If you don't like the feel of leather, then use an overgrip.

I wouldn't mess with the volkl dampening system but it isn't difficult to add weight to the handle pallet and not increase grip size.

if I come across a V8 315 at the right price, condition and grip size. I will get 1 or 2..
perhaps i'll trade my V8 300s if I can..
