What kind of injury is this?

Hi everybody.. I'm new here, just found this forum a few days ago. I used to play a lot back in high school, and for several years following. Then I got out of it for a while, back in for a short while, out, in, out, and so on. Basically, the last time I played was (I think), 2000-2001.

Wanting to get back into shape, I decided to get back into it. So I went to a tennis clinic last night at a local racquet club. It was cool because I was the only one who showed up, so I got some nice 1:1 instruction. Good thing too because I was waaaaaaaaay rustier than I thought. :)

The last part of the lesson was serves. During this, I managed to throw my right shoulder out pretty bad. When I would serve, I would feel a "pop" in my muscle, and it would hurt. So naturally, I tried not to do that. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Anyway, now today, without the aid of Advil, I can barely lift my arm above shoulder level. I'm not sure if it's the bicep... it's the muscle at the very top of my arm, and it doesn't feel "internal" like a rotator injury. It's definitely in the muscle or that area.

Now, about three years ago, I twisted both of my arms up pretty good while snowmobiling in the Sierras. I hit a rock under the snow, and would have gotten thrown off the sled, but I held on instead (I should have let go, it wouldn't have hurt). Imagine holding onto a bar, like you're going to do chin-ups. Now, twist your body 90 deg left and then right, violently. That's the best way I can describe what happened.

After that, it was at least 18 mos before I could sleep on either side, with an arm up under my pillow, without discomfort after about 10 minutes.

I haven't had any problems since then, until last night. I'm just wondering what the heck I did originally, and how to best get it to heal so it won't keep happening. If this is something that will continue happening, then I'll probably have to be done with Tennis. I sure hope not.

did you see a doctor for the original injury. i had a similar experience on a honda big red (3 wheeler) when i shoulda bailed but i held it instead. but i broke my collar bone, then a few years later playing some backyard football, dislocated my other on. i got treatment though, and after a few months i was fine.

There's no way you can be efficiently diagnosed by your description. Go see an orthopedic specialist.

Only by getting an MRI will you be able to know what the real problem is.

But my guess is if this all started by a trauma like the bike accident then you have a torn rotator cuff.

I have a similar story:

- Trama to shoulder several years ago.
- Pain went away.
- Played tennis for years w/o problem.
- Pain starts up again.
- Get MRI.
- Get surgery.

Thanks... I'm going to go to one anyway, because I need to get the ball rolling on getting my left wrist fixed. That was another snowmobile accident a couple years before the one I posted about above. :)

So while there I might as well tell him about my shoulder/arm issues and see what's up.

Thanks everybody!

try using rubber resistance bands to increase shoulder flexibility kinda like wd-40 to your rusty parts.
